Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Give this man a raise!
Man on fire today. This was from earlier in the afternoon. Players he felt would be good picks for the Steelers:

46. Sean Davis, S/CB, Maryland -- This is my guy. He can hit, run, jump, cover and do it all with great enthusiasm and attitude. Has all the analytics that the Steelers have wanted out of the last safeties they've sought out, Mike Mitchell and Shamarko Thomas.

Glad this board doesn't run the Steelers... Would have drafted a kid that didn't make it in day two in the first.
So would most draft analysts. I have to assume if this board was running the Steelers, we'd be hip to whatever it is that every team in the league seems to know right now that we, Mayock, Kiper, McShay, PFF, and every other scouting site doesn't. I read every draft site imaginable before taking Billings in the first in the SP mock trying to find ONE that would tell me that what I watched was a lie. No dice. So there has to be more to this story than meets the eye.

Really wouldn't mind if they took a chance on Cardale Jones at some point. If you're going to take a project QB, might as well take one with all the tools.

Wouldn't mind it if it was later in the draft. Have a feeling if Connor Cook is there in the 4th they may take him.

Lolley: Some are killing the Steelers for passing on safety Vonn Bell and Billings to take Davis and Hargrave. But the fact is, just as when they passed on Mackensie Alexander in the first round to take Burns, they stuck with their rankings, not those of some guy sitting in his basement breaking down tape or reading what somebody else wrote and going off of that.

Who would trade for the Raiders draft right now?

K Joseph (S) / Jihad Ward (DE) / Shilique Calhoun (OLB)
I like their first and third picks a lot, but I think Ward is going to be a bust, so no thanks.

I'm a big fan of the Skins draft... Josh Doctson, Su'a Cravens, and Kendall Fuller.  Value at all 3 picks and a defensive weapon in the 2nd who if paired with Shazier would mindfu** all the OCs we played against.

Glad this board doesn't run the Steelers... Would have drafted a kid that didn't make it in day two in the first.
To be fair, we don't have access to any of the insider info.  So if he does run with a questionable crowd, it hasn't been reported so we don't know about it.  And if he does have a knee issue, that didn't come to light publicly so we had no way of knowing.  We know about Connor Cook's leadership issues, so if we were crowing about him and he fell, that would be more on us.

But wanting a player and then finding out about his issues later, obviously he's now lower on the list of players we want.

Coming around to our picks.  Not gonna lie, I did yell Sunova Bit** when they drafted Sean Davis.  But I'm going to hope that our FO knows what's up and will be able to get all the "potential" out of these players.  Liked the Hargraves pick right off the bat.

Several guys who have been drafted had medial question marks. Some very glaring. I'm not buying the "knee" thing on Billings. At most that's just another thing that pushes him further down than being the thing.

Damn, Hargrave had 13.5 sacks as a college DT last year?
He was completely unstoppable at that level. The big question is how he makes the jump to the NFL. However, he was by all accounts the single best player at the East-West Shrine game which got him an invite to the Senior Bowl as an injury replacement. Apparently he acquitted himself well there also, so I have little doubt that he can compete in the NFL. It's obvious that the Steelers are looking for a new breed of nose, a guy who can penetrate and get after the quarterback rather than the 2 gap run stoppers of old (Jarran Reed.) It's clear that the type of players we're used to seeing go to us in LeBeau's defense are no longer the kind of guys we're after.

Also plannng on using him to rest the DEs  http://triblive.com/sports/steelers/10353914-74/hargrave-steelers-mitchell

So, who do we want today?  We got CB, S, and DE (I think moreso than NT).  We we could still use (in no particular order) WR, RB, O-Line (need a player who can play multiple positions if an injury occurs), NT, CB, LB, QB.  Here's some players we could hope fall to us:

  • Josh Perry
  • Andrew Billings (Who knows how far he'll fall and he plays like a solid NT.  Character concerns might be an issue)
  • Rashard Higgins
  • Charon Peake
  • Tavon Young
  • Kenneth Dixon
  • Vadal Alexander
  • Malcom Mitchell
  • Spencer Drango
  • Hassan Ridgeway
  • Landon Turner
  • Jatavis Brown (really like this guy)
  • Miles Killebrew
  • Tyler Matakevich
  • Brandon Doughty
  • Thomas Duarte
  • Marquez North
Also, it seems that the Steelers are really focusing on players with high Character.  After getting burned by several players recently it seems they've refocused on that as a priority.  None of the players we've drafted so far seem to have any off the field baggage.

I think it's a fair assessment that he base is more 4-2-5 now. If they go to a 3-4 the DE's will probably be used interchangeably as the NT. All 3 of them have similar profiles as far as skill set. I think it's interesting as, while they're not the only team doing it, they are going to a hybrid everywhere but CB and want athleticism on all 3 levels and value it over everything else.

As far as my comment about being thankful no one on this board drafts... That was mostly a criticism of the reaction to Burns in the 1st. Plenty of guys in this thread are very knowledgable of not only the ins and outs of the Steelers but also the profiles of incoming prospects. This happens every year though (why I don't try to hard to be a armchair scout anymore) and the league always have info that is never made public until after the draft. It's like a giant game of chess.

Also, Billings may not even be on the Steelers board. They are a team that will remove players they don't like and not look back on it from everything I can tell.

They want nothing to do with a 1 trick pony/pure NT. That type of player will be sitting on the bench 80% of the time. Hargrave can play in "base" (whatever that is now) and spell the DE's some. Even McLendon who had some position versatility played only 35% of the D snaps.

Re: Billings. "Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's going to be enough for Billings to be the kind of playmaker that teams covet in the NFL." http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2016/4/27/11511646/2016-nfl-draft-scouting-report-andrew-billings-baylor

A lot of guys still there that could help. Dixon, the RB from LA. Tech. Westerman at guard. Cooper at WR. Another corner wouldn't hurt. I'd really like to see an OLB in the 4th but I'm not sure how many guys are left that are potentially impact edge rushers.

I like the LB from Houston as a later pick.  Sort of a Sean Spence type.  Isn't getting much buzz, but he can ball.

Another Edge guy in 4 would be nice, but pickings are getting slim.  I was hoping Fackrell would drop.

Like Dixon a lot. This is the round I'd take Billings though. Should be an upgrade over LT Walton/McCullers. Maybe Christian Westerman

It might be Dadi Nicolas. They seem to like him a lot. I'm on the fence on him. Maybe a project like Alex McAllister?

Westerman would be a nice pick. I wouldn't mind Kenny Dixon either. Not an immediate need but would be a nice COP back and possible backup to Bell next season (as opposed to Toussaint.)

They always draft guys they bring in.

Jones/Prescott/Hogan/Driskell. Who would you take? (I want another backup.)

Maybe Hogan as a strict backup. Doesn't have much upside, but he's smart an accurate and won't kill you if he has to play.

If it's character concerns that dropped him, he'll fit right in in Cincy.

Ugh. I really hoped he'd go anywhere but Cincy or Baltimore.

OK, enough posting, I have a 12 pack of Pilsner Urquell and a raft floating in the pool that are calling my name.

So what I wanted out of the first 4 rounds was OL, DL, S, CB. Done! Now backup rb and qb and it's a good day. I'll take anything at this point though. Can get by without those backups.

Nice! Cloudy, rainy, cool here. Drinking beer, hitting the gym while waiting for the next pick. Was supposed to go to a brewery with the wife to check out a band she loves but she's backing out (been out of work 2 months due to medical, feeling blue about going back). :kicksrock:

Love the Villanueva story and he did well last year but an upgrade would be nice. Hope this is it.

Sunny and 90 here. Pool temp 82, beer temp 34.

Long wait for the next pick.  Can't believe they'll have much to look at other than depth bodies if they're wanting a QB.  Hope they just punt on that and bring some scrubs in as UDRFAs.
