Perhaps if he had just read this thread beforehand they might have had a shot.Butler's got some explaining to do. I know Hogan ran free on a couple of player mistakes but that gameplan was doomed from the start

He had no problem audibling last week.Good answer by Ben on the question, 'couldn't you have just snuck the ball in there at the GL.' 'Go with the play that is called' Translation, 'yeah, I would have scored but my OC is a moron'
maybe he was given a talking to about itHe had no problem audibling last week.![]()
I think he would have made a significant difference tonight. We HAVE to have an alternate outlet. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Ladarius Green is again inactive.
If then had Bell they score a TD there. Would that have made a difference in the game? No. Would it have given us a lot of hope at halftime? Yes. Bottom line- the defense did nothing and that's the reason why we lost. It's why we always lose against this team.maybe he was given a talking to about it

Yup that's what I said (verbatim actually)would have made no difference
You're proud of that collection of players and coaches? The same ones who think that we can just keep doing what we do instead of adjusting and somehow the end result will improve? Who, half of whom, don't know or don't care to tackle correctly? Who drop TDs, commit undisciplined penalties and mistakes (more in the regular season, granted) and who put their own egos above the team? They sicken me, and I'm also angry with myself for believing they could do better in Foxboro this time. Their heads have been up their asses since the last Super Bowl win. That was a shameful performance yesterday leaving zero to be proud of, IMO.Their pass rush wasn't good enough, their secondary wasn't good enough, and the combination was lethal. They also left two touchdowns on the field.
Still, I'm not hanging my head. Happy and proud to be a Steelers fan. Cheers, mates.
Furious here. I can't ever remember being so angry after a game. No sleep last night. Got rolling to work by 5AM and tried like hell to hit a deer but, like the Steelers defense, I was constantly out of position and couldn't bring any down.I realize players have to execute on both sides of the ball but I'm furious about the Ds game plan . I'm
Absolutely agree. Rogers is fine for what he is -- a slot guy that comes in when we go 4 wide. I'm completely done with Sammy Coates; he just can't be trusted to catch the ball and those huge drops on perfectly thrown deep balls are an absolute killer. Hamilton shouldn't have been on the field at all IMO -- much less evidently being counted on as a go to guy in a game like this when he's running OOB in the end zone and dropping a ball that hits him right in the numbers. On offense it was clear Ben was missing a complementary piece to go with AB. Bryant needs to be clean or Coates also needs to have the diapers come off. I think the offense having the full assortment of pieces is a pipe dream. That's the nature of the NFL is that someone gets hurt. I hope Green figures out his concussion issues because he could be a big part of the offense next year.

I was not happy we drafted him because of reasons stated in your post, and I'll add that he is not a very good tackler (for a safety) either, but can lay some big hits for a CB (not exactly a crusher as far as safeties go). He has exceeded my expectations, but those were low to begin with. A round later, and I would have been happy with the pick. I think he is the kind of guy you want in sub-packages, not a starting safety. He is serviceable, but just a hair less than adequate. Not the biggest problem we have on D by a long shot. A good band-aid. My hopes for last year's draft was Karl Joseph, but he was snagged up right in front of us, or a disruptor for the D line like Vernon Butler. Yes, we needed secondary badly but I don't think they got a lot of value at those picks. OK, but not great. Probably more a matter of our guys were sniped before we picked. I remember William Jackson was gushed over by us (thanks for letting everybody know) and Cincy took him one pick ahead of us. He was much more of a difference maker this year than Burns (who was not terrible by any means). Joseph and Shaq Lawson were also hopes of mine to drop to us but were already gone. Second round was more of the same. Plenty of guys that could fall to us, just didn't.What do people think of Sean Davis?
I recall watching him a few times before the draft last season, I was looking at him as a potential free safety rather than a corner. I saw some bad angles and generally just playing too loose in coverage and allowing easy receptions.
In the game last night it seemed like Davis kept playing more off as the game went on. The Patriots been known to throw underneath and with how far off Davis was playing, that was open all game.
Unfortunately, the bolded seems to have been the midset -- it's really the only thing that makes sense, honestly. The complete lack of selling out to try to get pressure was awful, too. From an overall POV (and in a vacuum discounting what we all saw last night) the season should be considered a success - losing the AFCC game in NE was better than most expected.
However, while the bitter lose is still fresh I want to say again how much this defensive game plan sucked balls. Many fans from many different teams said before the game that if the Steelers did what they have done in the past the result would be the same - and it was. I think most Steeler fans were hopeful the Steelers would come up with something different instead of that abomination. At one point on 3rd and long I said to my daughter before the snap that Brady was going to throw to the guy at the top of the screen and sure enough he did (the cushion was so damn big it was obvious).
So now I'm left wondering why/how this game plan was formulated. What was the thought process for trying the same exact thing that Brady has destroyed in the past? I'm sure they expected better execution, but giving that ####### big cushion is ridiculous no matter what kind of D you are playing. Are the players so bad that they can't even attempt to play man to man on a few snaps just to shake things up? Even if you play a zone defense why didn't the Steelers jam the WRs? I really just cannot comprehend what I saw - it makes absolutely zero sense.
If the coaching is that bad, then it seems their best option is to wait for Belicheck to retire - lol. If the players can't play man to man, or even jam a WR before falling into zone coverage then I guess they need to keep picking DBs in the draft?
I felt so much more optimistic after last year's loss in DEN a round before the AFCC game than I do right now.

I know exactly the play you're referring to. I did exactly the same and said (to my wife) before the snap, "First down to the receiver at the top." The Pats were going right to left on the TV.At one point on 3rd and long I said to my daughter before the snap that Brady was going to throw to the guy at the top of the screen and sure enough he did (the cushion was so damn big it was obvious).
All that about the defense is true and this was an offense sorely missing a ton of playmakers as well. Still both gameplans sucked on both sides of the ball and I'm not really proud of the Steelers season or anything because they made the AFCG. They looked like a team that won a weak AFC Central and had to go through Matt Moore and Alex Smith and got exposed when they had to face a legit QB. You can only beat who you play but nothing impressive to their season to me.Their pass rush wasn't good enough, their secondary wasn't good enough, and the combination was lethal. They also left two touchdowns on the field.

. . . and a true #1 TE if for some reason the other needs are sniped again. This could be a good draft for us, but more likely we did the same as usual and played just well enough to pick low enough and miss out on the hot spots in the draft. If there is any reason for optimism it would be possible return of Martavis, Cam and this draft is stocked with exactly what the Steelers need, edge rushers and secondary.
Because Coates taught him how to catch.I don't understand with Coates' hands of stone and Hamilton's noobiness, why they wouldn't let Heyward-Bey take the deep routes. He has shown time and time again that when he plays, he's good for a few deep balls. And he has much more experience.
Agree with most of this but hell to the no on Marshall IMO. Don't want the sideshow and don't want him in our locker room either. He's just not worth putting up with now that he's not elite anymore.Brandon Marshall could make a very nice #2 if nobody wants to pay him #1 money anymore. Obviously Bryant is an ideal #2, but I don't count on him anymore. I agree with the Josh Gordon comparison. Wheaton should be cheap to retain, but I like him as a #4 or a backup flanker with Eli in the slot. J. James makes a terrific #2 TE but the rookies could be our next Heath / Bruener.
He's not the penis he used to be. Hasn't been for a couple years after he got the mental health diagnosis and meds. Actually been a pretty good guy from what I remember. If not him, anyone that is not quite good enough to be a #1 (like Sanu for the Falcons). We can't allow ourselves to become so one dimensional if Brown or Bell has to miss any time. Our D was the problem yesterday, but most decent coaches can scheme to take away (for studs like Bell and Brown, that's 70-90 yds) a single threat, and our O is too good to be able to let that happen.Agree with most of this but hell to the no on Marshall IMO. Eh, I live right outside of Chicago, and when he left the Bears the general consensus among both the players and the coaching staff was "good effing riddance." He's not getting arrested any more, which is obviously good, but he's still a selfish doosh bag in the locker room. I know that he got into it with the coaches over trying to hold down an analyst gig (on Inside the NFL IIRC) and having to miss practice to fly out and be on set during the season, and there was other small stuff too. He's not the penis he used to be. It's hard to be able to afford everything we want, and they're doing a very good job of keeping players that fit and work, just not so much in filling in the holes. As well as our ownership and GM have been, there has been a deficiency in evaluating the middling talent that every team needs to have and stay under the cap. I really wish this team would start pawning off these late 20s to 30s picks on teams that want to jump on the last OK QB left and give us an extra shot on those "fill in" draft picks. They do well when we draft teens to early 20s though (Jones was not quite a whiff, but a foul ball maybe).
Remember that play where he never turned around and it was picked off? That's why. It was a perfect pass that would have hit him in stride.Copeman said:I don't understand with Coates' hands of stone and Hamilton's noobiness, why they wouldn't let Heyward-Bey take the deep routes. It's a tall order. We got out-coached by the greatest coach ever, and our D got carved up by the greatest QB ever. In their house.Lots of analysis all ending up at the same place: the Steelers will never again go into Foxboro and defeat a Belichick-led Pats team, Brady or no. We only make it to the Super Bowl if someone else knocks them off or if we get home field. Part of my anger today is falling for the premise that this team was different. Shame on me.
Haley simply forgot that it was Deangelo in there and not Bell. With Bell in there, the Steelers score a TD 98% of the time in that situation. Yes I'm pulling that number out of my ### but you get the picture. Bell isn't getting stopped there. Haley thought he could do the same with Deangelo.Forget Marshall, Bryant is coming back. But someone needs to tell Haley what a QB sneak is and the DC that his gameplan sucks balls.
With Belichick and Brady, the Steelers will never again beat the Patriots in Foxboro or Heinz field. Yes I was obviously exaggerating a little. But you get the point........Obviously they have the Steelers number but I wouldn't go this far.
Can't agree more and I'll add, a guy who rarely worked out, had concentration lapses, was not always in the right spot and just spent a year not playing football can not reasonably be expected to come back and be a force. Sure, he says he's working out and is in great shape and put on 10 lbs of muscle. I'm betting that he goes downstairs to his Bowflex for an hour, celebrates with a beer or 5 and plays a video game. The 10 (or 15-20) he's gained is not functional nor an improvement and is better measured around his waist than in an agility drill. If, and that's a big if, he comes back and plays a full season, he will likely be less than he was before and could even be just another Coates. Can't believe that some of you guys are willing to count on Bryant given how many drug tests he's failed in his short time in the league. IIRC we're at 5 now, but this time he's learned his lesson? You guys still draft Josh Gordon and Justin Blackmon every year in FF too?
I'm there with you, Irish. I'm sure I'll tune in to hopefully watch the Falcons beat the Pats but other than that I'm done with football for a little while. Go PENSI can't even watch or listen to any sports talk shows, score updates or anything of the kind. What an absolute miserable way to end a season. Don't see how I would even be able to watch superbowl with 2 biggest a holes on earth involved (Brandy/belidoosh)
