*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (2 Viewers)

I'm in east Pearland, close to Friendswood. Many houses in Friendswood are taking in water, but we are dry so far. Been watching the water creep up about a foot the last couple of hours, but if my math is right we should stay dry if we stay below 15" of rain through the night.

Going to be another long night.

Good luck to all affected.

GL, charv. Hopefully you can get some rest tonight.

15" sounds like an unfathomable amount of rain overnight but, sadly, it's entirely within the realm of possibility with this storm. We've had steady rain all day. Non stop.

Yeah, night before we had 20.8" in Pearland, I think Friendswood had 26"

Totally forgot that you lived over there. So lucky that you've made it through this far without flooding. Will be praying that things hold through the night. Give me a shout if you need anything.

Not complaining at all, many have it much worse than us. We are still dry, have power, plenty of supplies, and worst case we have a kayak to get out.

Yeah, likewise GB. We are very well stocked and have some boats in the neighborhood.

Already running those around down here during the day making sure everybody is ok and fed. Curfew between 10-6, which is good. Too much stuff in the water to contemplate going out at night.

Neighborhood coming together great and we got together to get some hot food to the search and rescue guys. They sure need all the help they can get.

Amazing. Good on you brother. So proud to know you.

How you feeling today? How's the house?
House is fine. It stopped raining a little after 5.

Thought fever was breaking, was down to 99. Had horrible chills then. Just woke from fever dream I thought was real for a long time after waking. Temp 101.4. :(  Took advil and flu medicine.

Glad to hear about the house.

Sorry to hear about the fever. Not sure what's open as far as medical facilities. We're looking for something other than ER or even urgent care but not optimistic right now.

Maybe tweet some of the news stations? If they don't have such a list already, they might jump at the chance to check into everywhere and create a list that would be really useful to viewers.

Googled and mainly found lists of closures, not of open ones.

Of course. Such a helpless feeling watching the coverage.
I know what you mean. I was just looking at the list of shelters and there's a high school about 2 miles away that I can probably get to. Might head over there tomorrow with some blankets and pillows and things.

ETA: Nuts, just saw an article it was closed as a shelter because of accessibility.

Just had an idea. A lot of schools have their own clinic. If one of those shelters I posted is a school near you, maybe they'll have it open.

Water line holding so far tonight, so we should be good unless something changes quickly. Going to grab a couple of hours of sleep.

Might be heading to Houston to work on housing condition assessments for FEMA.  I volunteered this morning and hope I am chosen.

It would appear the areas sw and w of houston have seen the worst of it more or less. And what is left may not be enough to ruin any other places.

Water may still be high thru next Thursday

I am in Lake Charles, working at the Emergency Management offices.  They are very nervous here today.  Rivers and bayous are very high and any rainfall is likely to cause flooding since there is nowhere for it to drain to.  We've been very lucky so far. We have had over 12 inches of rain, but flooding has only been in a few spots.  The rain bands have been spaced out enough for us to drain a good bit before the next round.  Hoping to get through one more day. T & P to the folks just to the west.  Unimaginable amounts of rain.

I-10 is deserted.  People can't get through Houston so there's nobody on the roads.

Hope the rain goes easy on you guys.

Just want to send a thanks to all the Cajuns, Texans, and anyone else for that matter, who have come and helped Houston through this. Same to those who have donated.

And thanks to all you FBGs here for the moral support. It has meant a lot.

As you are aware, Harvey is back in the Gulf - thankfully with considerably weakened winds. Every 5-day tracking map pushes the second landfall further and further east. Right now, what's left of the eye is supposed to come ashore over Cameron Parish and then pass directly over you guys in Calcasieu Parish. Wouldn't surprise me to see it keep drifting east, though -- next tracking map will probably have it coming in over Vermilion Parish or Avery Island.

For anyone with damage or with friends or family with some... Fox 26 was talking about the new crappy insurance-company friendly law that goes into effect this Friday.

Advocates are advising those with damage to immediately file a claim before Friday. Just getting your claim number before then is enough that apparently it won't be subject to the new law.

Sad...as if there isn't enough for people to worry about.

Stay safe, this doesn't sound  good

@JeffLindner1: Addicks Reservoir is at 108.42 ft. Top of spillway is 108.0 #houwx #hounews

The sheer devastation of this thing is not really known.  They haven't let news helicopters fly because of all the coast guard and nat guard choppers. They basically said if you fly a drone we will hunt you down and throw you in jail.

I think this will be an extinction level event for huge portions of the city.  Nobody will want to come back to areas that were touched in this event, and they will certainly have to revise the flood plains requiring people rebuilding to potentially build on sticks.

The amount of people with no flood insurance will be staggering.  Will create a housing crisis and a banking crisis as people just drop the keys off at the bank and walk away.

WTX showing stranded motorists in rising waters on 99 trying to get out of town and got trapped by San Jacinto runoff.  I don't think they will make it, seems poor form to show this.

20% of Houston has flood insurance, per the news.

Many people do not live in federal recognized flood plains though.

Flooding is the worst. May as well bulldoze every one of those homes. They look expensive. Who would want to live in one now? That's why I always live in a home that is way above any flood stage.
Not expensive, believe it or not.  The top home in Ponderosa Forest is probably 250k with many at 150.  That is a pretty typical suburban Houston Neighborhood that was built in the 70's-80's. Big, 3,000+ square foot homes that look nice but are all slab construction with cheap labor and no snow load design on roofs so wide centers, etc.

Many of these homes should not have been in the first place probably but, yeah, the floodplains drastically underestimated this.
