There’s a reason I listed 4 games Einstein - I’m happy for people to think Croatia was better in the final ( I disagree with that) but some folks are acting like Croatia was the best team in the tournament.  That’s crazy IMO.

That’s much more of a debate IMO, maybe I’m reading in to peoples comments but in general it seemed like France was getting downplayed.  They had a much harder path to the final and then won they final 4-2.  Croatia were great and I think Modric’s Golden boot was well deserved - just want to give France their due (and I’m not even a fan).

He just hates Croatia because they beat England.

The style Deschamps chose (and got his players buy-in to) wasn't pretty and led to the impression that they were outplayed by both Belgium and Croatia.  France has so much talent that a different manager might have chosen to point them in a different direction.  But Deschamps is an old defender and it may be wiser in a knockout format to prioritize defense and bet that Griezmann, M'bappe, etc. can convert a goal (or four) on the other end.

France stomped Belgium in expected goals. Croatia did exceed France in that metric in the final, but xG excludes penalties (and I thought the PK was legit).   Croatia still only produced a little over 1 xG, so maybe the fair result would have been a draw.  And like it or not, part of playing better is having your goalkeeper play better.  Lloris had a tremendous howler (which accounted for a huge percentage of Croatia's xG) but Subasic let in two soft goals himself.

I understand the comments about Croatia being better in the final (I also disagree), but I don't think anyone is claiming France is not a deserved champion.  They may have been a bit lucky to be up a goal at half, but their quality showed in the second half.  I also think some are forgetting that just 2 years ago this manager lost a final in Paris to a vastly inferior Portugal, playing without Ronaldo (apologies if this was beat like a dead horse by FOX during the game - I was at a large outdoor party and wasn't listening to any commentary.)  I'm sure many of them were thinking about that experience in this game, the manger first and foremost.  In the end, it was a very practical approach that secured the cup with very little doubt.

I'm sure.  Was half joking since my Croatian friend was at the viewing parties and sending videos of the celebrations.  The place was packed.  He also noted that Fox was going to be showing live shots of there during the game.

Have another friend in Croatia right now as well.  500K people welcoming the team home.  scarfs stating "jebote koliko nas ima!"  Zagreb on fire....  Pretty awesome

Deschamps' tactical setup was also interesting to me because they really lacked attacking midfielders like we are used to seeing.  They operated like a classic 4-4-2 with Mbappe obviously pushing forward more and Matudi playing back. It wasn't the most attractive system, but it allowed France to field their best 11 players at the same time.  Combined with the obvious buy in from the players, very effective.  The difference in Pogba was also very noticable.  Deschamps deserves a lot of credit.  

I feel like the the game lineups kept making it seem like Griezmann was more of a #10, but IMO he was deployed like a second striker.  One commentator I heard made an interesting comparison between Rooney (obviously not today's version) and Griezmann as players that really are only great in that type of role.  This rings true to my eyes with both France and Atletico Madrid

it is a amazing when you think about and the once every four year hot takes we have to endure.

The Jamaicans are every bit as fast and powerful as the best US athletes and Jamaican soccer gets pretty much the pick of the litter as one of the top sports in the country.

But like many of the African nations, being big and strong and fast is just one part of the equation even when you are born into the sport.
