Yep. Second time Argentina has done something like that in the final minutes of the game. This one was still within reach though. Total moron play
Had they played the Game 3 front line in the other 3 games, they might still have been knocked out this round but I think it would have been a different story for Messi. I'm just dumbfounded by the way they approached this tournament tactically.

You can say that going back to qualifications - a team with that much talent should not struggle as much as they do.
Makes me wonder if the players have too much control.

I've admitted I'm a newbie and really only go on what I see, so I welcome a 'better' perspective on Messi, though it won't negate the disdain I have for him thanks to my BIL's soccer snobbery; the dude lives in the Atlanta suburbs and seems pretty nonplussed about what their MLS team is doing, because his still looks down his nose at American soccer.oh great, this is where all the Soccer newbs come in with their "Messi is overrated" hot takes.

All of that talent are forwards that are too similar to each other to all play together. The defense and midfield are terrible.

You mean the worst national FA in the world didn't hire the right guy? They hired a manager who likes to press high to run a team with many older players, and then Sampaoli couldn't figure out a decent lineup until the final match of the group stage, which he promptly abandoned in the next match.

You're allowed to dislike players, but if you think Messi lives and dies by the ref's whistle then you seriously need to actually watch more soccer. It's a very bad take. In a sport full of flopping and embellishment you really never see it from him.

Talking about a big 3 with CR and Messi. I forgot about Neymar but honestly I don’t consider him in the league either way. He, Kane and some others are a tier below unless they prove it for much longer.
ETA - at this stage in their careers - I don’t think either of them will ever get to that level.

With one minute of stoppage time left Otamendi drills a ball off the French players head - setting things off. Just colossally stupid and dirty.
Neymar will - already has the hype.
Kane will always be considered a prolific striker, but won't be considered in the top 1-2 players. He'll get invited to the award ceremony, but won't be s serious contender - unless England makes a deep run in this WC, and wins the Euros in a couple of years with Kane getting the Golden Boot.
I actually think Salah will fall back this season, and won't see these heights again. I could see someone like Griezmann or Mbappe moving into that top-tier.
It wasn't time wasting - they were chasing a goal. Otamendi kicked a ball into a player on the ground after a foul had been called.

Pogba was fouled and went down. Which was already kind of dumb. But then as Pogba is still on the ground Otamendi drills the ball into his back. France was more than happy to pull out the handbags, and Argentina obliged. Wasted almost two minutes -- ref added one back.

Which was a nice job by the ref IMO. Would have been easy for him to let things go a little longer due to the dust up.

I've heard this term before and I guess I understand it, but is there a cliff's notes history of this term?
In British slang a fight where the protagonists are unable or unwilling to seriously hurt each other is commonly referred to as a handbag fight, in reference to the way girls fight by hitting each other with their handbags.
