***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (3 Viewers)

not a follower but sat here and watched the game from the 2nd half....wow...
Yup. I'll watch probably 20 minutes of soccer outside if this month or so.

Such a great atmosphere and intnesity in these games. Even that game where guys just kicked the ball around and were just trying to dive to get a penalty is fun to watch for me.

Loving this

Akinfeev finally gets the spotlight
9 saves during the game, and Spain took 25 total shots. Plus the 2 shootout stops. The rest of the Russians were running around with their heads cut off, every time they got the ball they'd pass it away. I would think he'd make more money in a major league.

as a follower I would like to apologize to you.  That was an awful game to watch.

The only part that kept it interesting is that it was a knock out game.  If that exact game was played in the group stage it would have been one of the worst games of the tournament.

From the twitters

“Ref had to balance making the right decision against his ability to touch car door handles with confidence for rest of life”
I read the discussion further up and I have to say I don't get it. It certainly seemed like the Russian had him yanked by the shirt and there was a replay.

I think they were both grabbing each other.  Ramos made a meal of it to try and get the call but that type of stuff happens on almost every set piece in the game.

I don't quite understand why but defenders appear to be allowed to get away with much more on set pieces than they do in open play.

Not sure either.  However, I am fine with it.  There is so much contact going on both ways that it is much easier to embellish and draw a foul if they call it as tightly as they have in this tournament.

I've always kind of liked Warren Barton in the studio, but man he is awful at calling a game.  Nails on the chalkboard for Timbers/Sounders yesterday too

In a way I guess it is similar to basketball.  If you breath heavy on a shooter, they call a foul but then they allow felony assault on rebounds.

This is already more entertaining than the 2nd half uf RUS-ESP
This is one of the reasons I don't like tiki taka.  You can only score mostly beautiful perfect goals.  There is so little room for something odd to happen like what happened on both goals in this game because they don't get it in the box enough.

That's what she said.

Got a late start, watching Spain-Russia now.

Pique always makes me think of Richard Dawson's bodyguard from The Running Man.
