***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (1 Viewer)

Thanks.

This is what I was really curious about (bolded).  So a top national team is basically the same as a club team in the 5-15 range (and Liverpool) in the top leagues?

Yes, something like Germany vs Everton would be relatively close. Germany would have talent advantage but Everton has team stability advantage. I could see someone arguing that either way.

We get it, announcer, Belgium is 3rd in the world and are still in a 0-0 game.  I caught it the 13th time you said it.

Embarrassing how much this Belgium team is flopping/diving. They should worry less about that and more on getting some shots on goal.

Belgium always looks like a group of strangers playing.  I'm also surprised KDB doesn't play closer to the goal.  I think he'd be far more effective up there.

Martinez has neutered this team. Way to go guy
Even the US (which was an obvious dumpster fire) waxed this Panama side in the first half by just putting high pressure on them.  I have no idea why Belgium are dropping back.  They wasted at least 10 minutes in that half letting Panama play in their end.

Others who know more can chime in, but no, I don't think that's the case. The elite club teams have more talent top to bottom AND play together. The only exception might be a country like Spain where their national team is comprised of most of the players from their top 3 domestic club teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico) who already play together.

But I would say rankings likely:

--Elite club teams (RM, Barcelona, Bayern, PSG, Juventus, a handful of EPL teams)

(big gap)

--Tier A countries

--Most other club teams in major leagues (Spain, England, Italy, France, Germany)

(decent gap)

--Tier B and below countries
I think the best countries are closer to the elite clubs than you list here.  They have edge, but Everton vs Germany is a bridge too far IMO

One reason why this is a surprise is that it appeared to be the opposite.  I had huge doubts about the defense but the offense was scoring tons of goals in qualifying (and not just against Gibraltar and crap).

I expected Belgium to crap the bed when they played a team that could actually hurt them, but I didn't expect this.

I lean much closer to the best countries being competitive with the best clubs than most do, but I always give myself the caveat that the international teams are allowed to play together for a year in a club setup.

Interesting that Witsel and Carrasco still make the starting XI despite opting to chase the money in China. Usually that's a kiss of death for a soccer players international career.

I agree with that.  I think a few of these teams could be as good, if they played together for a long time.

I think that's less of an issue w/ Belgium than it is for European nations with stronger domestic leagues.  There's only one domestically based player in the Belgian squad.

Well, yeah. But the point was that they don't play together and I think that matters. I'd be curious what others think about Everton playing this current Germany team right now without extended time together.

Totally agree. Top countries could already go head to head... But with every day practice like clubs? Ithink it would be hard to beat a Spain, Germany, Brazil, France, Argentina FC.

The national teams have had almost a month together to practice in advance of the World Cup.  Their cohesiveness is at a higher level now than the typical two games in an international break including travel time.

So you're saying they're like a preseason club team.
