***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (3 Viewers)

I wanna think theyll get better as the keep playing together.
I agree.  I think France is one of those teams that is so over loaded with talent that they need more time together to figure out how to play and what everyone's role is.

They, probably more than others, would greatly benefit from a club setup where they could figure things out over a full season.

Turned the game on only as France scored the winner (no mention anywhere of what a nice goal that was), so I didn't see the rest. Could be as you guys are saying about France playing to the level opposing them. Could be that they're not organized enough to break teams down that are set up to counter their strengths.

Sounds like Pogba had another disinterested game? Did Aussie create chances outside of getting gifted that stupid handball?

Sounds right, but at the same time, the last 20 minutes or so reminded me of their friendly with the US, in that they dominated possession and created scoring opportunities, like they just flipped a switch or something.  Like deja vu or something.

I wonder if Pogba will try any more cute stuff when he's double-teamed on the sideline again.

I know I picked France, but I wouldn't have minded seeing Hernandez get a yellow for flopping at the end, since replay showed there was no contact to his head but that seemed to be what he was trying to sell.

You want a yellow for selling an obvious foul? Good luck with that.

Obvious foul? I guess, but that wasn't even embellishing the foul.  "I got hit in the back, so let me act like I got knocked out and hold my head." This ain't CONCACAF, this is the WORLD CUP, he should act like a man.

If this was Concacaf he would have gotten stretchered off after 5 minutes of writhing.

We Americans don't like the embellishments,  and I've always disliked the hand to face nonsense (especially when they instituted that stupid auto-red rule for face contact) to try to draw a card...especially when the  contact is obviously nowhere near the face. Hernandez got a forearm shiver between the blades, clear cut foul.  It may be the players are now just holding their faces in "agony" to help sell the foul...as said- obvious foul. I think he was also trying to sell the "agony" to help buy an extra few seconds on turf to kill the game. Welcome to soccer just about everywhere.

Gotta say, while early, the quality of these games so far seems better than I remember in previous World Cups, especially for the group stage.

Hiddink had it right in the pre-game IMO:  Argentina need to press.  It probably helps Iceland with their counters, but it'd get Argentina into the game -- pick up their intensity -- and make Iceland less comfortable.  Right now this is exactly the game Iceland want to play.

Volkswagen commercials are guaranteeing that I’ll never buy a VW...

”Even though the US isn’t in the World Cup........”

#### off VW, I really didn’t need you to bring up painful... oh hello miss Brazil...  ok maybe I’ll cheer for your team.

Surprised the universe doesn't implode when two colossal ####s like Diego and Pepe make contact
I love how they cut to Maradona immediately after he blew a line. And ignore that's what's we qouted up there this board sucks.

apropos of nothing, but I like this ref.  Seems to really have a handle on the game.  Liked that he briefly held up play to check on the iceland player who took the shot to the head.

Im in a couple Portuguese facebook groups and that block on Messi is gonna make the ronaldo backers so much more unbearable.

Love me some ronaldo and portugal but i can appreciate both are amazing without 1 having to be better than the other.

that was a fun "day two" yesterday. camped out all day at a local bar with about 5 friends. the games progressively got better technically.  spain/portugal gave us what we wanted, even if portugal got bailed out late.

cr7 converts, messi does not  :pokey:

ftr- i like messi, do not like ronaldo

My BIL was a missionary in Argentia for 20 years, so he's a typical 'love Messi, hate everything about Ronaldo' guy, and TBH, I don't like Messi as much because of that.  Having said that, however, his talent is undeniable, but like the greats who transcend their time, he also needs to find another level/gear.
