***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (5 Viewers)

I decided that my manager deserved a gift for letting me watch the World Cup in his office.  He will come back from vacation to this celebration of the greatest sport on earth.

Let me know if the link doesn't work.  Finding working upload sites behind the firewall is harder than finding topless soccer players
Unless you meant to display a picture with a caption "looking for crabs with dad", i'm thinking it doesnt work....

Make sure you have them bloody Mary's ready; you're going to need a Kafka amount to transition & make it worthwile.
Sober driver already planned.

Also, for those of you recall my light fixture incident of the 2016 euros....I'm taking the light back for every Portugal game and hanging it up for good luck.

We did a 4 round, 4 person draft of the teams remaining, I ended up with the number 1 pick.  Took Brazil first, then with the snake draft I got Belgium and England, which I was really happy with.  Last team left was the host country, and we've seen weird things happen with the host country before.  Should be fun.

Wagering guys are too busy with, well, wagering. Missed this thread before. Anyone want to chime in?

World Cup guys...I know nothing about this, but I'm in this pool of like 250 people and I'm tied for 16th place with 19pts.  The leader is alone at 22pts.  In the knockout phase everyone gets to pick a bracket, but obviously I have to make up a little ground on the teams ahead of me.  Round of 16 is 1pt, Quarters are 2pts, semis are 4pts, and picking the champ is 8pts.

Looks like the one side of the draw is a little more straight forward than the other.  I'm either going with Spain, England or Croatia depending who I take on the other side.

Where would you look to differentiate?  Something like Brazil/Croatia?  Belgium/Spain?  I have this feeling about Uruguay, but that's a hellish draw to get to the finals.  Or would you go chalk with like Brazil/Spain with Portugal/Sweden in the semis with them?

Where did Spain go?

To win, you have to take an underdog to win.  Not a severe underdog (like someone in 100+ place) but a team like Croatia, Portugal etc.  GLLLL

Hoping the Argies get booted, but Uruguay can stay. Brazil will beat Mexico like a cheap pinata.
Probably.

Some of these same Mexicans beat some of these Brazilians in the finals of the u17 wc in 2005 (and en route to winning 2011)... So I wouldn't automatically discount them.

One problem I have with the fair play tiebreaker is that there are often circumstances where taking a yellow card is the correct play. It’s not unfair or a negative in many instances (the “professional foul”). It’s worse than flipping a coin, should be eliminated as a tiebreaker.
Thats not true at all - imo

A "professional foul" is very negative.  It may be a tactical decision to take a professional foul rather than allow a breakaway to continue - but that is, in many ways worse than a reckless foul - because the professional foul is an intentional decision to break the rules.

In a sport looking to encourage more scoring - penalizing the professional fouls seems appropriate.
Yep, with Fair Play in play, it gives the potential professional fouler one more variable in the decision.

I dont think "an intentional decision to break the rules" is the right saying to use. You do something, this is the consequence. Its no different than a basketball team fouling late in the game to force free throws and try and come back.

An "intentional decision to break the rules" imo would be cheating somehow.

I agree with what you are saying, just think its not intentionally breaking the rules.

#### gets real today.

First up - pre-tournament favorite v. Team Messi Rojo

Loser will probably rank 2nd among the most disappointing WC this year.

I am not sure what else you call it.

If I go in for a tackle, and make a play for the ball, but mis-time it, or get the angle wrong, I foul a player.  Its not intentional - i.e. I was not trying to foul him, but I did.

If I trip a player, or grab a player on a breakaway - I am not trying to make a play on the ball, I am simply trying to stop the player from advancing.  That is an intentional decision to break the rules.  The only purpose is to stop the opponent - not to regain possession of the ball for my team.  I know its a foul, and I am willing to accept the foul and consequent yellow card as opposed to allowing the play to continue.  Its cynical: "I know that you beat me fairly, but I am going to stop you anyway".

Its part of the game, I would not punish more harshly, as I understand why players make that decision.  But, if you are rewarding teams for fair play - then its fine by me that a professional foul counts against fair play.

Wow, going with Pavon-Messi-Di Maria rather than Messi-Higuain-Di Maria, which seemd to work really well the last game.
Aguero, Higuain, and Dybala on the bench. This is why those transfer $ numbers don't mean such about how good a "team" is.

Amazing matchup. Excited.

I made a nice breakfast in honor of France today and then did a pile of cocaine in honor of Maradona.

Surprised as well.  I guess they hope Pavon can give Higuain's work rate while leaving out the shocking misses.  I don't think having Messi in the center works best for them, though, even if he'll drift where he wants.

Rank these strikers presented in alphabetical order: Aguero, Dybala, Giroud, Higuain
