Messi going to get all the blame, but the rest of the team looks slow and uncreative.  The midfield is non-existent.

France crushing them so far.

Serious question:  is this a form/strategy issue, or is it that Argentina can’t execute because they are too slow?
I think this issue is pure form/strategy. In game 3 they looked like a team with a plan. And Higuain worked his ### off to create room for Messi.

When Rojo and Mascherano are 2 of your 3 defensive spine players you just aren’t a great defensive team.  Argentina has great individual skill players in attack but they are not a very balanced team.

Now watch them by some get a goal and win in PKs.

Higuain needs to get in there for his work rate. And Dybala too. Jesus, just play a 3-2-5, get the ghost of Mascherano out and just go all out and try to use offense as a defense. Otherwise, they are going to keep getting ripped to shreds in the midfield and down the middle of the defense.

This.  Having Messi in the center today doesn't work as well because he typically looks for others making runs and picks and chooses his spots to make runs of his own. Higuain created a lot more space through his effort.

They did the exact same thing in Italia '90 WC against Italy...looked like complete dog####, scored a poacher's goal, then won on pks.

Also, I agree with this offensively. But defensively, they are too old/slow against France.

So I think it's both.

Messi had his highest goal totals as a false 9, but that was a very different squad than this lineup.  Higuain for Perez at the half should happen
