***Official 2020 Michigan Football*** (7 Viewers)

It worked all season ...but not on Saturday, and Michigan just didn't adapt.  Shame on them.

I was surprised how badly Michigan got beaten on the LoS in both directions.  Michigan put no pressure on the QB and couldn't protect their own.  I wonder how much of it was lingering issues to guys like Gary and Winovich (and then the in-game loss of Bush).
This was the biggest surprise for me.  The O-line played well this year, but still weren't a strength imo.  The defense got no sacks and not even a single QB hurry against OSU.  Haskins is too good to allow him to have time to make the throws.

I hate to bring up the L word, but it reminded me of the Lions game. No push from the d line and little on offense that worked down the field.

:goodposting:

Do you think the writing is on the wall for Pep?  Seems like way too much talent on offense to be this vanilla.  Or do you think that's the way Jim wants it?
I mean, they scored 39 points yesterday. I'm pretty sure they were the second highest scoring team in the Big Ten this year. And they likely dominated time of possession.

Yesterday the problem most definitely wasn't the offense.

The offense returns everyone except Higdon and JBB next year. I suspect it will improve quite a bit.

I certainly don't want to be a victim of the moment, but it was remarkable how unwilling they were to deviate from the script.  I understand the philosophy and it will absolutely work 95% of the time.  The 5% it doesn't work is when the other team has better personnel and more depth.  At that point you have to find a different way and this staff just doesn't seem to be willing to do that.

Incidentally, the same applies to the defense.  They have to acknowledge their weaknesses.  If you and I can see them, you can bet your ### they can see them as well.

Only 13 + the gift wrapped td while the game was still in doubt.

Actually no, but don't forget, at the end of regulation they allowed fewer points than OU allowed against the Jayhawks.
Alright, well....if after that game - LSU's 3rd loss this season - you still think LSU is a better team than OU then I'm not sure what to tell you.

I am not a DC but I was an assistant on a HS team in Detroit for 3 seasons. :)

Even I could see that the man to man was not going to work Saturday...when OSU runs the same crossing patten for success 10-15 times I think it was time to go zone coverage to prevent that play.

Bown said they did not go zone because he wanted to pressure the passes with blitzes..well they were not getting close to the QB.

It was the same thing that happened last year when he came in.  They were running crossing routes and it was working.  The hard part about zones is that you can't wait until the last game to start running them.  It should be practiced all year in every game.  Whatever the reason they weren't getting pressure it should have been a big red flag from the jump that something needed to change.  They should have known what was coming and based their initial game plan to stopping the crossing routes.  Coming out in a zone blitz scheme would have made it more difficult because they wouldn't have been ready for the change.  Forcing them to try to run or throw into tight windows was the better way to go.

I am sad to see Gary go, but he was never as dominant as I expected.

Considering how high he is expected to get drafted I guess I am wrong, but it seems like Winovich was involved in more big plays this year and Hurst was the man last year.
I agree Winovich was more dominant but Gary is a freak athletically. I reckon if he tears up the combine, he's going to go very high.

Can't hardly blame him for leaving. Be kind of foolish not to.

Well there’s a big basketball game tonight. It’s the first time I’ve even wanted to think about Michigan since Saturday.

i think that any draft-eligible player who will likely be selected in rounds 1-3 should go. if you're really going to have an NFL career, get to that 2nd contract ASAFP

UM did land my son's buddy and baseball teammate for 8+ years... Kicker Jake Moody.  Dude nailed something like 10 50+ yarders in his HS career.  Solid kid.
Thought I'd re-post this!  Jake's a quality kid.  I can only assume Quinn isn't.

I agree..Gary was a good not great player.

After the out of the blue flip, the flood gates seem to have opened.  I've been :hophead:  about offensive line and the lack of focus in recruiting.  I guess Jimmy finally read this thread and decided to do something about it ;)   I don't know how many can be taken in this class, but it looks like it's going to be a pretty darn good class even with the flip.  If any of the few "prospects" decide to jump on board, it will be the cherry on top.

By the way....anyone have any meaningful insight on the out of the blue flip?  Was it the rumors that Harbaugh was going to the NFL?  Rarely are BOTH schools caught off guard like that.

Do you guys know where I can get a list of all the guys not playing in the bowl game?  It feels like half the defense is sitting.  Both Bush and Gary are sitting and have declared for the draft.  I have no idea who fills in for Bush at this point.  I think they can manage replacing Gary as he was out a few games this year and they backfilled nicely.

Yeah but it is weird, right? What is behind the flipping and flopping I wonder?
Well, best I can piece together after asking the exact same question and knowing that the decision took both Alabama and Michigan by surprise is that someone got in his ear when the rumors of Harbaugh to the NFL started.  It's been rumored that while he did flip to Alabama, he flipped back just a couple days later but kept it quiet.

TL'DR:  WTF knows with these kids :lmao:

Just makes me a bit nervous about his committment to the program and what his personality might be like. It is a huge decision though so I can appreciate wanting to get it absolutely right.

I get it....I certainly don't want it to be another Solomon situation, but this kid is basically free of competition at safety.  It's his job to lose at this point.

I’m guessing Alabama flipping Jordan Battle was the deciding factor.
I touched on this a bit in the CFB thread thinking this was going to be the case.  They announced basically at the same time and then there were rumors that even though he had flipped several days ago, he "quietly" flipped back a couple days later.  You never know with these kids what the truth is.  I'm just glad he's back in the fold.  He was a huge get at a position of need.  It definitely makes the long shot miss at Harrison easier to swallow.  Looks like Urban's retirement was both a blessing and a curse if Battle really left because Urban was leaving.

Battle was pretty much a given that he was flipping before Urban retired.  It was just a thing, but I would say that Saban out-Sabaned himself in this case.

May be easier to list those who WILL play...Higdon is not playing either.  Starting DE, LB, RB....who else?

True freshman RB will be one to watch..they can play him without burring his redshirt.  Think his name is Turner. Heard he has been a star at practice.
