***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (2 Viewers)

I mean the US doesn't make it, I'm sad but it's not really our national sport. I can't imagine being a German, Italian, Belgian, Mexican, Ecuadorian, or Dane. They literally have nothing else. No cricket. No basketball. Heck, almost no ping pong. Nothing. Their sports existence exists every 4 years or maybe for the bobsled for 1 day. And they can't even crack into bracket play.
I mean I get it, but I certainly don't feel bad for Germany or Italy (and I say this as an Italy fan). They'll always be relevant, they'll always be in the mix in World Cups and Euros, and they've won 2 of the last 4 World Cups between em.

The other countries though, I agree.
I feel bad for me. Not that they’d win it all, but the knockouts would have been more interesting with Germany, Mexico, or Belgium (who I had wagered on. 🥲) as opposed to Australia and Morocco.

I think Spain finishing second in the group is a massive upgrade over finishing first. They play Morocco instead of Croatia and if they advance, they likely get Portugal instead of Brazil. Am I missing anything?

The quality of the hot fans will never reach the sun level.

This is the first WC ever to have 6 different continents represented in the final 16 teams.
Yet, not six confederations ... Australia deserted the rest of the minnows.

I was thinking this for Germany if they had managed to finish second. :hot:

This guy is cooked ...
you probably saw our comments as we watched it.....

Guys have been vilified for one bad miss (Wondo is still talked about to this day). And while I can't quantify exactly how much worse it was than Wondo, I can safely say it was significantly worse.

I can only hope the Belgium people are forgiving because it wasn't just a bad game, it was a spectacularly bad 10 minutes that involved your Golden Generation being being sent home early in likely their last chance to do something special.

He is lucky for now that he plays in Italy. At least he might get some respite there.

To be fair, Lukaku and Wondo aren't even on the same planet career-wise, resume-wise.

Also, I'm Belgian and so far on social media, my family over there isn't really vilifying Lukaku. I think they recognize the whole miserable World Cup experience as being on the whole team. They also did not have high expectations this go around. General feeling I got was that they thought they were a very old team already past their prime and their FIFA ranking was a bit too high.

The Belgian “Golden Generation“ really peaked in Brazil and Russia. Several starters front to back are early to mid 30s and there don’t seem to be many young players who are ready to step in to keep it going.

Everyone in your family sounds much more mentally healthy than anyone I know.

exactly. That is what makes it so much worse for Lukaku.

it is really good to hear his family talk like that. The things people are saying about Lukaku online are beyond reprehensible. It is not even just a meme, it is just vile.

It would not shock me that many of the people who are being the nastiest are also people who bet large amounts of money on the game today, and/or on Belgium as a whole.

holy crap!! missed today's games. all caught up. wow!!

i don't remember so many balls hitting the posts/crossbar in a WC.(not just today)

loving it!!

and after the US, how do i not root for japan?

I was in meetings all day and could only follow scores. What a terrible day to have to miss the footy. I need to get control of my life.

The xG Philosophy
@xGPhilosophy

Romelu Lukaku accumulated more xG in the second half against Croatia (1.98) than Morocco did in the entire Group Stage (1.35).

This guy is cooked ...
What is xG?

Expected goals based on where shot(s) were taken from, and whether with feet or head.

So finally we have Group H scenarios

Portugal has advanced

-------------

Ghana advance with a win OR
A draw and South Korea loss/draw
OR
A draw and South Korea win by exactly 1 goal and South Korea doesn't outscore Ghana by 4 or more goals

Ghana is eliminated with a loss

-------------

South Korea advance with...
A win by 2 or more goals and a GHA/URU draw
OR
A win by 1 and a GHA/URU draw and South Korea outscores Ghana by 4 or more goals
OR
A win and a Uruguay win and South Korea's margin of victory is at least the same as Uruguay's margin of victory
OR
A win and a Uruguay win and Uruguay's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay doesn't outscore South Korea by 2 or more
OR
A win and a Uruguay win and Uruguay's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay outscores South Korea by exactly 2 and South Korea has a better fair play record (currently South Korea -3, Uruguay -3)
OR
A win and a Uruguay win and Uruguay's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay outscores South Korea by exactly 2 and South Korea and Uruguay are tied on fair play record and South Korea's lucky ping pong ball is drawn

South Korea is eliminated with a tie or draw

-------------

Uruguay advances with a win AND....
A South Korea loss or draw
OR
A South Korea win and Uruguay's margin of victory is 2 or more goals greater than South Korea's margin of victory
OR
A South Korea win and Uruguay's margin of victory is 1 more goal than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay outscores South Korea by 3 or more goals
OR
A South Korea win and Uruguay's margin of victory is 1 more goal than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay outscores South Korea by exactly 2 goals and Uruguay has a better fair play record (currently South Korea -3, Uruguay -3)
OR
A South Korea win and Uruguay's margin of victory is 1 more goal than South Korea's margin of victory and Uruguay outscores South Korea by exactly 2 goals and Uruguay and South Korea are tied on fair play record and South Korea's lucky ping pong ball is drawn

Uruguay is eliminated with a tie or draw

So there you go.
Advanced so far: France, Brazil, Portugal
Eliminated so far: Qatar and Canada

I’ve enjoyed watching Jesse Marsch interview with Rog on Men in blazers.
I did not realize they were that close to signing Gapko over the summer... it always seemed like a long shot to me. It sure seems like that would have been quite the coup though. Check out the bold below:

“First, it’s difficult for us at Leeds because I think Gakpo has gotten out of our price range. I mean we were so close to securing a transfer for him in the summer… I mean it was so close and now obviously it’s disappointing for us. Our sport director was in Holland, meeting with the family, had agreed to terms on everything, was talking with PSV, I mean we were 99.9%. I felt bad for Victor Orta and all the effort that he put into it, and obviously it was disappointing for us, but I’ve also talked to Cody in the process and I’m happy for him to have had so much success here at the World Cup and show everyone how good he is.”

There are two main techniques. Smash it or try to make the keeper go the wrong way. He was clearly trying to make the keeper move early with his jerky movements but the keeper did not bite. I don't think he was tentative, I think the keeper just out played him there in standing his ground.

SoccerGuys, riddle me this... On the PK, it didn't seem like any of the Ghana players followed the shot in for a rebound attempt, yet it's happened in other games. Why or why not?

Seemed like that was not the goalie's fault, that his defenders hung him out to dry.

Ugh, looked even worse on replay. Defenders had multiple chances to stop that and whiffed at least three times.

Shoulda just been straightforward

The trying to make the keeper move looks so easy when it works and looks so bad when it doesn't.
