Well, they were better.

Their ability to finish plus our mental errors were the difference. That said, hard not to be optimistic for a more mature team in 2026. We got some great athletes.

:sadbanana:

Didn't matter to the result but 35 second sub in stoppage time (and other stoppage) and only 9 seconds added. Looks like FIFA is gonna dial that back which is unfortunate.

Need to finish and get that killer instinct. Need to learn how to do set pieces (wasn't that more of a strength once upon a time with our national teams like in the Donovan era?)

Fought hard - played well on analytics but ya gotta bury the gifts against a class team like Hotcherlands who will make the most of their opportunities.

With no qualifying cycle will need to seek out the toughest friendlies possible for next time. A lot of promise but gotta hope these young guys are hardened by this experience

Today showed why Gregg isn't the coach for this job. Netherlands is better than the US in every category, yet they let us dictate the control of the game and sat back in perfect defense and countered clinically. That back pass to the top of the box was obviously coached this week as they tried it at least half a dozen times and it gave them great chances repeatedly.

Van Gaal is the type of coach we can only dream of having for this young team and he laid out a masterpiece today.

Argentina is going to struggle to beat that team IMO.

They mentioned it in the pregame, the Dutch didn't come to participate, but to win it all.

I hope the orange win the whole thing. They were impressive.
The most impressive parts were a) their game plan, and b) their clinical finishing.
Yeah. It has been covered above but van Gaal with an excellent scouting of the US squad. The US was outcoached and their inexperience really showed.

Still, the Dutch do not look very comfortable in defense and will face much better forwards.

Well, there's a lot to build on and still plenty left to build for 2026. I hope GGG isn't the architect for the next 4 years.

Only thing I want to see is him turning his resignation in or USMNT Firing him but neither has the balls for it. Don't get distracted this squad was winning in spite of him do to the talent. GGG coaching this squad 8-1O years ago barely wins and already sacked.

just no way to defend not playing Gio more
I heard from a couple of people Gregg and Gio had a disagreement and GGG not having thick skin benched him. Used Gio's injury history to excuse not playing him because of Injury to defend the act. Instead of having the balls and saying he benched him he came up with an excuse most wouldn't question in the first match. He screwed himself though after that match when he said GIO was available off the bench

The person who reported this recanted it. No idea if he was pressured to do so or not, but worth noting that the source of those rumors eventually walked it back.

The strong rumor I heard is that Claudio all but threatened Wynalda to come clean and fix the clear lie he spread. The lie was among one of the lowest moments in many low moments amongst US supporters this cycle.

Hate to agree with Lalas, but his optimism is the right take. The US has come a long way and their performance is something to be proud of.
Yeah I hate agreeing with him too. But I hate how no one is critical of Burhalter. It's like Roberto Martinez who has a long leash because he knows people in the media. We have lower expectations for people we like and want to defend AKA the media then those who they don't like.

The Gio thing is the biggest mark against GGG - not because of how Gio is as a player but because we cannot afford to have a coach making decisions that way. LvG shows the opposite with his tactical plan vs USA.

Blind with the goal - alas my US pride kept from me from putting him on my fantasy rooster. Not a single Holland, Dutch or Netherlands player on it...
:ptts:

From a macro level perspective Dullerands chances have been underrated in the sense that they had a very likely path to plan for. An untroubling group followed by a most likely opponent of USA to fully prepare for followed by a most likely opponent of Argentina - I think they'll be ready for Messi and company.

By contrast I think that the Group F teams had it trickier - I mean how much to Croatia prepare ahead to see....Japan? As opposed to Germany or Spain (and they probably put in equal time on those two). Anyway just a random thought.

Just hope I can somehow snag a ticket to see a game in 2026 at the Meadowlands. And even better if (as is NOT likely) it would feature the USA. (They'll try and put the big diasporas here)
