I've hold out from the fairway 5 times (one a double eagle) and I've never actually seen the ball go into the hole.

Hey gump...Spieth DOES play a scotty :P
:kicksrock: coincidentally I can't make a 5 foot putt or longer all of a sudden.Anyone with tips on putting stances? I can't seem to keep from cutting across the ball. I line up putter first, then step into my stance...and naturally I end up slightly open, then slicing my putts.
Are you finishing high? Above the ball spot by not allowing your shoulders to move freely after contact?

Most issues like you describe I see people finishing high with the putter well above and to the right (if right handed) of where the ball was.

I always remember that after contact it should look like almost a mini driver swing with the club almost coming in toward my body.
Hadn't considered my release. Like throwing the club head at the target?

Not even that. Where are you leaving the ball? To the right of the hole (if you're right handed)? I'm not sure what you meant by slice to be honest.

After you've finished your stroke is your club head above where the ball was (further away from you...high?)

If it is, it's one of the easiest fixes in the world, if not, then I completely misread your issue.

Buddy of mine made double eagle in a tournament today. He also made birdies, bogeys, doubles, triples, and one quadruple bogey. It's a funny game.

Been toiling in the high 80s over the past two years. Made a commitment to work on my swing and make some changes.

1. Get a flat left wrist at the top of my back swing. I've had an issue where I sort of cup my left wrist at the top. It was causing the face to open way up leading to a fade at best and way too often a major slice.

I spent so much energy thinking about the wrist and hand action at the top I wasn't realizing my arms were bending at the elbows slightly. This led to the second major change.

2. Keep the left arm locked out at the elbow. So much so that it feels like I'm actually pushing the left arm out farther. Mid backswing it feels like I'm pushing out on the end of the club with my left hand forcing the hinge as I get to the top.

3. Right hand at the top cups back like I'm holding a serving platter. This is helping me get the swing on plane and 'in the slot'.

This is a lot to have on your mind. Too much. Finally getting the muscle memory from practice to take over. Shot my first 40 on front nine yesterday and was only +6 through 15 holes. Couldn't help but think this might be the day I break 80. Keep thinking "stay in the moment" over and over. Had a double and a triple on two of the last three holes with a par sandwiched in between. The triple was a killer. Came up 50 yards short on a par five after second shot. Hit what looked like a perfect shot into the green only to have it come up short in a bunker up against the front lip. Had to blast out sideways and take my medicine and followed that up with a chip and a three putt.

:wall:

Doubled the final hole when I over-cooked my drive with a double cross. Finished with an 83 tying my record low. That said, I just felt confident standing over the ball the entire round. Might be able to get out this afternoon on my home course.

Also, got my assignments for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. I'm working all 4 days of the tournament as a grandstand marshall leader.

Thursday. 10th green AM shift

Friday: 13th green AM shift

Saturday: 6th green PM shift

Sunday: 15th green AM shift

Shot 41 = 39 today with 5 stupid 3 putts. I don't have the lag down yet with this putter plus speed. I hit some really good putts that just didn'tfall also.

made a 6 on number 2 wit a whiff on a pitch. Well not a whiff. I hit 3 inches behind the ball.

found my rhythm after 4 holes. Overall very pleased.

Was a club short all day though. Not sure if age or just taking some off or trying not to over swing

Just bought a black Cleveland putter on clearance. Milled face. I have a Ping with a soft insert. I just can't stand the softer feel.

I need to get out to a putting green, but in my house...i am ending high right.

By slice, I mean I am missing right...feels like I'm cutting out to in to spin it right, but my arc might be completely inverted.

Might be on to something.

simple fix. You are taking the putter back outside the line (looking down you'd see the putter head either go straight back or even slightly away from your body).

to compensate, practice taking back in a narrow arc sloped towards your body, so on the return you'd be hitting the ball on the inside quarter of the back of it. Like you're trying to hook it. Practice this a bit, you'll find the sweet spot where you're not either hooking it or slicing it, but hitting it true. You can tell for sure by drawying a line on your ball, and if the line wobbles or changes direction in the putt it means you're putting spin on it at impact. A true struck putt will just have that line turning over.

Need some help here. I've always had a tour-level swing speed. Driver 275-285, 7 iron 175. My problem is I'm duck footed. I walk with my feet pointed outward. My whole lower body has conformed to this. If I stand with a square left foot I can't really clear my left hip properly to finish with a full shoulder turn. I've compesated by firing/flipping my right hand at impact and standing upright at impact (my spine angle at impact is more upright and to rotate around my left foot I get onto my left toe to spin through to a full finish).

This is killing my long iron game. Without wngaging in an intentional stretching or training program I want to turn my left foot open at address to allow room to clear. I'm fighting resorting to this 'compensation' because it's not traditional but honestly I just want the forward shaft lean I used to have. I'm even willing to address slightly open to facilitate this.

If I go this route what should I watch out for? Coming over the top? More cut shots?

I thought that as we get older it becomes more traditional to open up the front foot more so we can rotate the hips through easier. Is this not consensus thinking?

Yes...there shouldn't be any huge ramifications by doing this, especially if it's going to help you turn and get through the ball better.

Played for the first time yesterday. Started out pretty good. But by the 14th hole, I felt like I had never played the game before. I felt like I was swinging like I normally do, but the results were catastrophic. It was embarrassing.

I woke up this morning and could barely move. Every muscle in my body hurts. Usually during the year, I spend a lot of time on the treadmill just walking, or going on hikes on trails. But for the past 7 months, I've pretty much not been able to exercise at all because of hip and back issues. Getting old sucks.

Agreed. Both LF & RF are slightly open for me on full shots

:lmao:

If I hit 900 balls in a week, I'd be in a wheel chair and my hands would look like I put them in a blender.
During golf season, I do nothing but think of golf. There's a beautiful range right around the corner for me and I have a season pass there. Might go hit another bucket right now.
I'm jealous. It's always a PIA for me to play. One downside of city living.
This sucks. It's an effort to play golf living and working in downtown Chicago. I have to drive 30 minutes just to hit balls and practice. 18 holes with the guys on the weekend is a full day commitment for the most part. 8 hours at least with commute, warming up and a few drinks after.
I live in Chicago too and it sucks. I agree with everything you wrote including the 8 hour rounds with the commute. Even the driving range is a pain because I don't really want to hit balls off the mats at Diversey driving range. Most of the time I just end up catching a quick 9 on one of the city courses.

If I'm going to practice I usually get up and head out early to either Harborside or Oak Brook GC. Those are the two closes facilities that have decent practice areas. I can make it to each in less than 25 minutes.

I had a 9-hole round in league play where I had 9 different scores - everything from a 2 to a 10.
So what did you shoot?
Pretty sure he shot a 54, but I understand if you have doubts about my math.
Weird. Because I was completely serious with my question.
It was several years ago but I'm pretty sure 2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 was 54 back then
Appreciate the double clarification. I thought maybe you had shot a 60 or higher.

I assumed it was clear I was joking with the question. Of course it is a known fact that I suck at math, so I'm going to give people the benefit of the doubt that they were just being nice.

What are the range prices at Harborside? I currently go to the Diversey range, as I live right near there, but I can't stand hitting off those mats that mask small swing flaws. I think Diversey is a bit of ripoff for $16 per large bucket, as half of the golf balls look like they were used in the Hogan era.

So there's not a range anywhere downtown? Sounds like somebody's missing an opportunity. I guess there isn't really the room for a Mission Bay or pier situation like Chelsea Piers. Or even park land next to he National Mall like East Potomac. But seems odd.

First round in a month yesterday.

44 out

No birdies, three doubles. 33 putts. Greens were punched and sanded about a week ago, so anything outside of 3' was an adventure.

Not sure if I can/should post this score: started out as a single and was 3 over after 5 holes (from the whites) . Caught up with a twosome, and played out the round with them from the blues for speed/convenience/ego.

$11 for a large if I remember correctly.

My only issues with the Harborside practice facility are these: 1.) depending on where they have the tees setup, there is usually only one target green inside of 175 yards. 2.) There is only one chipping/pitching green and it is always packed. They have two putting greens and you can't chip on either.

There used to be a range and a par 3 course right downtown. It's since been covered in condos. It was between the river and the north side of grant park.

Irons are nice and worked out.

Hitting a large bucket of balls (at least) every day for 10 days has worked. It's all about the grip tension at the end of the day and hitting down on the ball. I can pick my head up all day long, but if I don't hit down on the ball and compress the impact point and have a loose grip, it shanks every time.

Got my 8 iron out there to 150 yards a few times.

Also poked my drive out there to the end of the range a few times :bowtie: (it's only 300 yards deep).

I'm ready to actually play a round now....

Forecast for this weekend is lows in the upper 30's, highs in the upper 50's. WAH! WAAAAH! </sad horn>

I believe you can post it as two 9s. Take equitable stroke for 6-9 & post from whites. Then post your back 9 score from blues.

I might be wrong about front 9

I played Sunday, but I think we're passing on this weekend. Haven't made a final call yet.

One thing I lack near me is a good range
I hear you. It was something in the past that was annoying.

Going to an actual course to just hit on the range doesn't work for me. All I want to do once I drive there is play a round.

This place is just outside the city limits of Philly and only 5 mins away from me. Just a range. I'm very lucky. Also has a sand trap, pretty good chipping and putting green and a LOT of mats, as well as an area where you can hit off the grass if you dont want to use the mats.

I'll treat you to a round any time you want to head out my way.

I can't hit off mats. Just hate it. I've got a nice public course about 20mins away with a great grass range and putting/chipping green (Stonewall Orchard).
