Going to go hit them both a few more times at a minimum. Finding the RSi1's on ebay brand new with the exact specs and club selection that I want, so they're still a possibility.

Planning on buying 5-PW, AW, and SW from the same set. +1" in length and 2 or 3 degrees up on the lie **. Contemplated buying separate wedges as a set, but thinking I would prefer to have the same shafts throughout.

** Note about lie angle. I've struggled with pushing shots right from the start. Not big fades or slices, just a bit to the right. Makes complete sense now that I've learned how much my lie angle was off from optimal. Being too tall for my clubs has been causing me to have impact occur with the toe down too often. When I got to see the marks on the bottom of the club when hitting the strike panel it was fairly eye opening. I had no idea how steep my attack angle was. It's making a solid case for getting fit to your clubs as best as you can in my opinion. Hoping it will translate to a long term difference in scores.

Another thought... I get the feeling that by purchasing new clubs I'm trying to buy lower scores. Feels sort of like cheating. Maybe just trying to level the playing field makes it sound better?

Spent the past two weeks researching. Felt like I was buying a house or a car. Invested tons of time into reading reviews and opinions.

Purchased Ping G series 5-PW, UW, and SW ($800) after going through the fitting process for the 3rd time to make sure everything was what I wanted. +1 length, white dot, 3 degrees upright, midsized grip. Just striped shot after shot with them. I know they jack up the lofts over time, but still was shocked to hit a 5 iron with 200 yards of carry. Was surprising even to see a PW go 140. Made me realize just how old my clubs were (early 90s Ping Zing 2).

Will take about a week for them to arrive.

Debated not buying any of the wedges and working on a completely different set of Clevelands, but didn't notice the difference enough so I just figured I would get the same set of clubs from top to bottom to better cover my distances.

i'm looking to change balls for the 2016 season (been playing e6 and Q-Star in last year), and was advised to give Snell "My Tour Ball" a look.

alleged performance equal to PRO V1, ChromeSoft, and ZStar (among others), and price of $31.99/dzn with free shipping.

anyone played these?

I didn't see a "golf destination" thread...planning a guys weekend centered around golf with a couple buddies here in the Southeast.  One of the choices being floated around is Savannah, GA.  We all love that city but have never played golf there.  Anyone have experience with courses around there and positive reviews/suggestions?

fyi....be sure to check your scorecards before they get turned in.....even if it is a fairly friendly regular saturday game...

cost me 3 strokes and a skin cuz i had to leave in a hurry..

Spring is about to hit the Detroit area. Forecast calls for 70 on TUE. Gonna get out there and hope my back works the next day.

Its Spring soon - going to be building up some arm strength

Played wednesday.   First of the season. Another stellar 44 -38    Had 35 putts which is AWFUL. Had 3 3-jacks.  Very unlike me but won $2 so that's all that matters :)

Played wildfire (Palmer) in Phoenix yesterday as they're prepping it for the lpga event next week. Played the tips (guy in my group is a pro and wouldn't gamble unless we played the backs). Diabolical greens plus the length really made for a tough day. After several round in the 80s I shot 101. :bag:

Heading out to play this morning to try to right the ship and get that bad taste out of my mouth.

Can anyone recommend a good sand wedge?

Handicap: 12

Weakest part of my game, by far, is the short game... especially around the green.  I typically use my sand wedge from 100 yards-in.  I'd rather be 100 yds out than 45-50.  I have a lob wedge but not always comfortable with it.  I chip usually with a 9 iron or my sand wedge depending on which I'm comfortable with in that round.  That's where I need help.

I typically lose most of my strokes around the green.  I'm decent off the tee and with mid-irons (Ping G2 set, but use a generic S wedge).

Has anyone used that xE1 65 degree wedge?  The supposed cure club that the Golf Channel runs the ad for every 20 minutes.

Link

Or something like a Cleveland Smart Sole wedge?

Playing La Costa for the first time tomorrow.  Not sure which course we are on but I'm sure it'll be too much for me.

My buddy and I play best ball vs. his 18yo son who is a +1.  Kid is insanely good but not interested in college golf, wants to be a pilot.

This is everybody.   Do what you can to be more than 80yds out.  60-30yds out is no man's land.

as far as brand-names go, i've been very happy with Titleist Vokey series wedges. i played Cleveland before those (which i also liked).

Vokeys, for example, are generally denoted by loft, grind/bounce as opposed to GW, AW, SW.  currently, i'm carrying three:

52 - full swing = 95yds (i can get another 10 if i jump on it, and can 3/4 swing to 85yds pretty easy)
56 - full swing = 80yds (this becomes my all-purpose wedge from 80 and in, can open the face for shorter shots that need to stop, and play the ball back for bump-n-runs)
58 - full swing 60 yards (i use this club almost exclusively from the sand since it's got a pretty high bounce, which i tend to blade from the fairway.)

i'd go to the local golf shop and hit some in the cage to see what suits your desired full swing yardage, and what feels good in your hands. locally, Golf Mart offers a 90 day exchange policy on all new club purchases, so i can play with it for a few rounds and take it back for a different one if i need to. better yet, head to the course and see if the Pro-Shop has a demo that you can take out for a round (or on a range w/ real grass)...it can be  hard to get a feel just hitting off mats.

got out for the 2nd time this year on Monday:

51 Out
43 In

34 putts, hit 2/14 fairways, 3 GIR. front 9 was patently awful. didn't make a par, didn't hit a fairway, had two in the water off the tee and one lost (also off the tee). granted, the course was soaking wet from tee to green after five days of petty consistent rain (every lie in the fairway or rough was casual water), but i had zero feel especially with the driver.

back 9 was much better (after the whiskey kicked in). started with a double, then parred 4/8 holes. was still weak off the tee, but the misses weren't as bad as the front and finally got my short irons dialed in. putting was good overall: only one three-jack on the day.

Playing from the tips will do that to ya.

Your pro guy is #### for doing this btw.  Too big an advantage - next time tell him its your guy's way or don't play ####-o.

Maybe I'm the weird one but I love these shots.  I take my 52 degree, put the ball on my back foot, and hit low punchy shots with a ton of spin.  Much rather be 40-60 than 100.

Thanks, Quint.  I've also heard good things about the Vokey wedges.

Had a 4 day weekend last week with brothers and friends at Myrtle Beach.

The Heritage in Pawley's Island.  Beautiful course on an old plantation.  Gators sunning on the banks on several water holes.  Shot 84.  Favorite course of the week.

Prestwick in Surfside beach.  Nice course, some tight fairways.  Shot 78.

Wachesaw East in Litchfield beach.  Nice course but greens were punched about a week or so ago and weren't at their best.  82.

Indian Wells in Surfside.  Lots of water on this track.  Decent course but there were many groups of retirees that day.  Fairly slow play.  Had my only eagle of the week on this course, shot 83.

Arrowhead just outside MB.  Nice course in good shape.  84.

Heard great things about the myrtle beach courses but never played. Those multi day trips are a blast. Nice scores, too.

My no-mans land is 20-30 yards out having to go over a bunker.  Either I decelerate my swing and pop it in the bunker, or blade it across the green like a missile.

I'm from upstate SC and we've been going to the beach for decades.  There are so many cool courses up and down the grand strand, really from Charleston all the way up to Calabash and into NC.  My brother uses the MB passport golf club to get good rates.  We played most of these for $35-$41.  One course was $50.  Now with it getting darker later in the day most course down there have good afternoon rates... some around $25 after 1pm.

We rent a house that sleeps 10 or so.  Lots of food and drink.  Awesome time.  March is a great time to play there too.  Highly recommend.

I actually have (well, sometimes) a decent flop shot from about 20 or so yards, if the lie is good.  Those 50 yard pitches are the suck for me.  It's hard to draw back to a half to three quarter swing for me.  Like everyone, though, I don't have the time to practice.

13 the Par 3 all carry over water is probably my favorite holes.  It's a monster from the back.

Once you get on the green, tons of gators across the way on the backside of the tee box.

@Jayrok - I've tried many different wedges and vokeys are always my preferred.  Depens on what soil you have and your planned use on what bounce you should get

The 13th par 3 over water is a beast from the tips (~225 yds).  We played from the blues at 205 and it played more like ~215 with a breeze in the face.  I hit a 3 iron and thought I had a chance to catch the right side of the green/fringe but it found the water just off to the right.  Very tough hole.  That course also has big undulating greens.  Easy to 3 putt out there, which I had a few.

Another gorgeous course in that same area is Caledonia.  If you get a chance to play there you'll love it.  It may be the best course on that south side of MB.  It's pricey but well worth it every now and again.

Cool thanks.  Yeah depending who we go with we play white or blues.  I don't have the game anymore to try and muscle out the tips.

That's about what I played it at last time I was there and I ended up over the left side bunker and had a ridiculous second shot to hit.

I try and play that course any time i get down there

Guys, going to visit father in law and will be playing a lot of golf which I still am not good at. Hit the range today and each drive would either go right initially or peel right once it started straight.....any quick and easy to remember pointers for a 30 handicap playing with 10 handicaps and little time to fix?

Keep your right elbow* close to your body throughout the entire swing.  Stand further away from the ball than you have been.

*Assuming your right-handed.

sounds like you're "looping": bringing the club back inside, and then coming over the top on the downswing and follow through. pretty common.

one possible quick fix (assuming you're right-handed): in your grip, try moving your RH a little more to the left (i.e. weakening the grip). you might lose a little distance, but mitigate the slice/fade.

you actually want to strengthen your grip to prevent a slice

you could be right.

i notice that when i move my RH to the left on the grip, it forces me to keep my elbows closer together, and my ball flight is much straighter.

Without seeing people's grips and swings it's really tough to tell but in general you strengthen your grip to prevent your slice, however for you personally weakening your grip you might be changing your swing plane because you have too strong of a grip to start, if that makes any sense. Tough to arm chair swing coach without visuals :)

By default most people's grip is too weak.

I carded a 31 on the front nine and a 50 on the back nine in high school. Par 72.  On the front I chipped in twice for birdie and made a 30 foot putt for eagle on a par five.

I had two 9's and an 8 on the back nine with four balls out of bounds.

Three rounds over the long weekend:

Friday - 44/53. Happy with the front, not so much on the back. I've been working on getting a little more hip turn on the backswing and when I do it well, I hit the ball better and farther. Had a couple of nice drives but fell back into old habits on the back and starting pushing everything to the right.

Saturday - 48/48. Personal best on this course - scorecard was a shining example of keeping the ball in play. Put 5 balls in the water - on 12/13 other holes, did no worse than bogey. One highlight - made the green in 2 on a 500-yard par 5 by going 298 on the drive and the rest of the way with a 4-iron. Helped that we had a good tailwind. While not a great score, I was happy with how I played and it was a beautiful day - temps in the mid-70s.

Sunday - 40/41 for a personal best of 81. This is the same course I played on Friday. Missed a birdie putt on #9 that would have been 39 on the front, my first ever sub-40 for 9 holes. Still happy with a 40 which was the best I'd done for 9. Still working on my driver and hit some good ones on the front but the last couple weren't so good. Only one double bogey on the day on a par 3 where I missed the green and took two chips to get on before 2-putting.

Playing a member-guest on Friday at a local country club with a friend of mine (he's the member). I've played the course 3 times - 105, 117, 119. There's a ton of water and narrow fairways. I think I might just leave the driver in the bag and focus on keeping the ball in play. The flights are by handicap and he's taking lessons also (he shot 82 today playing with us). He's a 17HCP, I'm a 20 (19.5 after today).

I'm doing a clinic in late June - 3 days, 9-4 both Sat/Sun with 18 holes on Monday. It's hosted by a teaching pro from California (Monte Scheinblum) who I've heard is a fantastic instructor. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm not looking to get to scratch, I'd just like to get a little more consistency and learn to hit the ball better.

If you guys are shooting low 80s at 17 & 20 handicaps you may be kneecapped.
