Depends where you go Golf Galaxy the fitting is free if you purchase or the charge you for the fitting

 I usually get fitted after I choose what clubs I like because not all clubs have the same lie

For example my old Hogan edges were 2 degrees upright my current Callaway razor x are basically stock but if you look at the default specs their 1° upright compared to what my default specs for by Hogan's are so in reality I'm only down 1 degree compared to what my Hogan's were.

I'm considering joining a golf club.  It's not a full scale country club, just golf, restaurant and bar.  It's also the nicest course in the area, and I've got a few buddies who play there.  Cost is affordable and with kids now out of the house, I've got more time on my hands.  I'm tired of playing alone on crap courses, fighting for tee times, and 5 hour rounds. 

My problem is selling it to the wife.  For years I've been griping that I don't get to play enough golf so she knows it's an issue for me.  She's Michigan Dutch though, so cost is ALWAYS an issue with her as is "abandonment".  She has lots of friends who are always game to go hiking, biking, or drinking wine so it's not like I'm leaving her alone - i think it's more of a control issue for her (she likes to control my schedule). 

I'm going to join regardless - Is there a way to broach the topic without turning it into a wedge ( :X ) issue in our marriage?  Has anyone navigated this issue successfully or is it just a "Sorry, deal with it" sort of thing.   

 
A thought about "getting fit for clubs"...

It assumes you have the same consistent swing, which for the average hacker is very far from reality. If getting fit involves anything other than some measurements of height, distance of hand from the ground, and swing speed I think you're wasting your time and energy and just praying that getting "fit" will help your game. Hell, even swing speed is going to vary a ton from day to day depending on how loose you are. I see guys who some days have a great turn away from the ball and create tons of power. Other days they take a quarter turn and struggle to make contact. 

Getting fit isn't necessarily a bad thing if it means purchasing newer more forgiving clubs, but in my opinion improving your swing and mechanics can do far more for your game than just buying new clubs. There's no easy quick fix.

Thanks bell.  I'm curious, doesn't the bolded defeat the purpose of the fitting?  I though the rationale behind the fitting was to find which clubs best match my swing?

This is where I am.  I've been away from the game for a couple years and my Nike Slingshot irons and Taylormade Burner woods are all over a decade old.  I'm starting to play again now that my daughter has taken up the sport, and I'm guessing there have been quite a bit of technology upgrades over the past 10-12 years that would help me out.  But you're 100% correct that adding new gear isn't going to immediately fix my game - I'm not under that impression at all.

10 years is a good run for a set of irons and woods, right?

No bold - but I think I know what you are asking.

A fitting to me is getting your lie/loft/length adjusted.  Not which clubs you should be hitting - you find the clubs you "like" and then order them in your fit.

This is going to vary obviously based on player but for me - I have only ever played Forged irons.  I know most likely I'm getting forged.

Anyway my process is this - I know my handicap and I do research on what clubs I think I may like.   I'll then talk to the guy there for some input.  I'll then swing the clubs I like (stock)

I'll then have him "fit me" when I have it narrowed down to 2 or 3 clubs.

I'll then adjust those same clubs with that quick fit.   Once I get down to the clubs I really like - I do the full fitting

So there is tweaking as I go. I may hit one club 2 deg up, another 1 degree up etc.   

It also helps that I know what my current setup is going in - if that makes sense.

Ah - yeah, I can see that once you're at this level your fitting is more of a tweak since you're already pretty advanced.  Relative newbies like me with 20 handicaps probably get more from the fitting. 

Hoping to become a regular in this thread moving forward.  My 8 year old daughter is the key to gettting me back on the course - I'm stoked!

So as a 20 HCP - you will want Player Improvement Irons or Super Improvement Irons - probably on the Super side as a 20

Pending on places in your area you can go and just hit different irons. Once you find a couple you like they should be able to also make adjustments on the fly.   

But as someone mentioned earlier at that point it may be more of correct length etc.

Even for me - I'm not tall 5'9  - my last set of clubs were 1/2" longer and 2 degrees upright from stock.

My current set with my swing I ended up with a stock set.   However the specs on that stock set are different than the stock specs than my previous set.  So my swing changed a little and my clubs aren't that much different based off the "end spec".

So things can and will change as you play :)

first round this year, and first since July 2017:

out - 50
in - 51

fairways - 6
GIR - 3
putts - 35
 

negatives - missed three birdie putts inside of 10 feet; two balls wet, and three OB; topped four balls off the tee; one three putt

positives - had three birdie putts inside 10 feet; hit six fairways; made a 20' putt in front of the club Pro for par

ended up hitting 8i three times: 130, 145, 143

 
Attention Philly Area GolfGuys,

Pickering Valley Golf Club in Phoenixville, PA is running a deal where for two years ('18 & '19) you pay $349 and have unlimited use of the course via tee time. Only snag is $8 a cart for 9 and $16 for 18. This is perfect for me, as my work is 20 minutes away and I live 35 minutes away so I plan to get the most use out of it ducking out of work for 9 when I can or on flex weekdays for 18, with weekend use an added bonus.

Had an awful round yesterday (strained front side rib area is preventing me from making any sort of decent downswing transition) but I did manage to chip in a birdie from about 40 yards out.

Very steep front to back sloping green and it just ran all the way and dropped. I was pretty pumped

 
My game has steadily improved over the past five years. Handicap down to 7.5. Scoring in the 70s more consistently. Short game continues to be the avenue to scoring better. 

HOWEVER, I've dealing with an elbow injury. Thinking its tendonitis (golfer's elbow) but have reasons to believe its something worse, and its not improving. This next Tuesday will officially be a full month without touching a club. I've been on edge. Constantly pissed off about small things. Might be slipping into depression. Not good. I've become a fairly serious golf addict. 

Hit a doctor for the first time a week ago. Have an appoint with an orthopedist this coming Wednesday. Not sure where this is going...####. I'm getting pissed off just typing this. 

Anyone else deal with something similar? How long were you out of commision? 

 
Frustrating game. Seems when alignment is on I play well pretty easily. I get precise and try to repeat but some days i can set up parallel to the target line and other days not. Huge difference. 

 
First 18 hope round this afternoon. Chaska Town course. Tee time is 3:09. Air temp around 96. Heat index prob 110. 

####. Definitely not going to be drinking during the round.

You’re hardcore. I thought about playing 9 today (just got a new used putter from second swing this afternoon) but its way too hot out. 

Chaska course looks super nice, probably a little nicer than a crappy golfer like myself needs to pony up money for.

The weather in MN sucks...winter until almost the end of april and over 100 by the end of May. Completely skipped Spring.

1. Love that course. My colllege roommate lives on it and we play it every time I’m back. I should hit you up. 

2. The hotter it gets the more alcohol is needed. Just drink plenty of water or bring some pedialyte. /arizona

 
Played in a tourney last weekend with over 100k in play. Surprisingly it’s a scramble with a huge Calcutta. Pretty damn fun. 

 
4 straight birdies for the first time today, my first 4 of the year after 3.5 rounds without one ?. Bogeyed last 2 for a 73. Enjoyed being on a more open course (Fox Hollow) than my home course. Best round in 2 years.

Oh. I’ve played a few member guests and never saw something that high. :shrug:  

To specify, this is all one flight. Although obviously a few games going (pari-mutual, Calcutta, skins, and net/gross) theoretically any team could get like half the pot.

At what ages are you trying to get your kids into the game? I want my daughter to fall in love with golf so I’ve picked her up a set of junior clubs that should arrive today. She’ll be excited to get them as she has said she wants to play with me.

She’s only 4 though. I imagine this might be way too young as she probably doesn’t yet have the coordination to hit the ball consistently.

We’ll probably start with some simple instruction on grip and stance at the range only.

I won’t push it much at all at this age because I want her to enjoy it. 

At what point would you look into some lessons?

Sorry, but even thinking about lessons right now is silly.  Good lord my man, she is FOUR years old.  What she's really saying is she wants to hang out with Daddy.

You need to read that first bolded comment of yours and think about what it really means for your daughter.

You probably already do this but:  Line up to the hole with club in hand like you are going to swing.   Don't swing at it, rather lay that club on the ground with it touching both toes.  Stand back & see where the club is aiming.  Surprising how off a person is.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t disagree at all. The First Tee has a minimum age of 7.

Lessons are a long ways off IMO. At that age there's nothing but chipping an putting, and I would offer little to no instruction. It just needs to be fun to put the ball in the hole in as few (or as many) strokes as possible.

What's your typical shot shape? Where do you miss most often?

Agree with the folks that already chimed in on spine angle. I'm a sloucher with the rounded back too. Feels bizarre to pull my lower back in like I'm sticking my gut out, but it gets me to the right angle at the hips. Helps a ton to stay on plane as long as I rotate on my spine and not get too armsy. The more I feel like I'm hitting the ball with the turn of my torso the better I play. 

 
11 year old girl next to me at the range yesterday.  Watched on and off as she clicked 3 buckets of balls dead straight down the same line.

I can't do that so I dominated her on distance to make myself feel better.  I bet she was impressed.

I struggle with blocks/pushes. High right. I’ve been working on ‘clearing’ better. I have a very tight left hip which makes it hard. If I stand slightly open to the target I can stripe it. 

For me getting my hands high at the top helps too. I can get stuck then extend hips then flip.

For sure.  I posted earlier that the First Tee won't even take them until they're 7.  We have a Top Golf nearby though.  I think she'll enjoy just swinging at it and hitting them to nowhere with intermittent chicken finger breaks.

With a full turn and high hands do you feel like that gives you a bit more time to start moving forward to attack the ball? I'm referring to that getting "stuck" feeling. Does stuck mean you're stuck with the weight still back and not really flowing forward?

 Buy stuck I mean getting my hands too low on the downswing and coming in to much from the inside of the ball.  If I keep my hands little higher at the top of the swing and fire that left hip at first, the club will drop a little bit into the slot and I’m actually trying to hit a little bit of a fade on my irons. 

The best drill for me is to keep my right hand open throughout the entire swing. I use an interlocking grip but I will keep the other four fingers off the club entirely on the range and when I do that I can really strike the ball.

Rules question:

Match play.  Both players' approach shots miss the green.  Player A chips to about 10 feet.  Player B's ball rests on the fringe up against a primary cut of rough.  It is not on the green.  B elects to use a putter to make his next shot, and putts the ball to within 3 feet of the cup, and then announces, "I will finish."  Player A does not object, Player B proceeds to make his putt for par, Player A misses his 10-footer and loses the hole.  

Were any rules broken?

ETA: specifically I'm wondering if it is allowed to finish when your last shot was from off the green and you're not "away."

There is no such thing as a "continuous putting" rule in golf.  Playing out of turn is playing out of turn.  In stroke play, there is no penalty for playing out of turn, also it's allowable to finish out instead of moving or marking your ball if you're in another's path.  

In Match play, if a player plays out of turn, the opponent can force him to put the ball back and replay it during his correct turn.  If nothing is said before the next shot, then there is no penalty.

Are you sure about that?  In the video below Tiger's first win on tour, on a playoff hole, Tiger is not away but elects to continue putting even though he is not away, and the announcer says that he is "well within his rights to finish out."  The only difference in my scenario is that the previous shot was played from off the green.

Positive.  I even linked the official rule for you.  There is no continuation rule.  There just isn't a penalty for it, so in a stroke play event, it's common for guys to finish up.  If that weren't a playoff in a stroke play event and were actually a match play event, Love could've asked Tiger to remark and wait.  Although in a match play event, Tiger would've asked if it was ok to finish first.

Interesting.  I have never heard anyone ask if they may finish while playing, I've always heard them announce as if it were a right.  Has your experience been different?  Not to mention, the announcer in the clip said he was well within his "rights."  I swear i will never know all the rules of golf.

 
Has anyone ever overcome the yips?  It is a terrible feeling to stand over a putt already convinced you are going to miss.  Liquid swing helps a little, but wondering if anyone has genuinely beat them.  It’s been years since I have felt comfortable with a putter (and there have been several).
