You probably already do this but:  Line up to the hole with club in hand like you are going to swing.   Don't swing at it, rather lay that club on the ground with it touching both toes.  Stand back & see where the club is aiming.  Surprising how off a person is.
i'm off so far right it isn't funny....

Finally broke 80 again for the first time in a long time.  Had to finish birdie-birdie to do it.  I have shortened up my swing, narrowed my stance, and really focused on tempo and staying on balance.  When I do that, I get a consistent result.

You know how sometimes you can hear the same bit of instruction/advice time after time and it never sticks, but then suddenly someone new explains it just slightly different than everyone else and it all makes sense finally?  I was watching some old videos from these online coaches Me and My Golf and it was a beginners centric episode.  They were covering grip setup and out of nowhere an adjustment I’d always struggled with was clear and understandable.

I've played 3 rounds since in the last 2 week:  92, 88, and 85 this afternoon.  Things are improving

It’s starting to happen. Played 5 times over the course of 2 weeks, consistently hitting the fairways and hitting it far. Last round had a birdie, 3 pars...and a few scores without names.

Played consecutive days with some people who are all better and was consistently better than 2 of them both days.

So much more fun when you don’t suck.

I've played golf for over 20 years now(since my early teens).  Been anywhere from a 1-7 handicap for the last 15.  Never have had a hole in one.

My brother is 4 years younger than me.   He started playing 2 years after I did.  He's been a scratch to a +2 handicap since high school(plays all the time).  He's never had one.

My best friend has golfed as long as I have(we were on the high school golf team together).  He's similar in skill to me.  He's never had one.

His father has golfed for 40+ years.  He's always been about a 10-12 handicap for as long as I've known him.  He's never had one.

The four of us went out two weekends ago for a round.  My brother brought his 8 year old son with.  His son has hit the range and sometimes comes with and hits a few balls and putts on the greens, but has never played a full round.  We are on hole 11 at our local and it's a short 140 yard, slightly downhill par 3.  It's 105 yards or so from the front tees so after we all hit, then my brother tells his son to go hit one from the front tees(since that's about as far as he can hit a ball right now).  Of course, while we're all standing there watching.....  4 pretty decent golfers who don't have an ace among them..... My 8 year old nephew holes out.   :lmao:    I think I laughed for like 4 holes because of the ridiculousness of it all.  Kid's probably hit the ball straight at his target 3 times in his entire life and he has a hole in one without ever playing a full round.  Golf.... love it.
This is great. Punch your nephew for me.

Played my 200th round on Tuesday and it turned out to be the hardest course I’ve ever played - Plantation Course at Kapalua. Birdied one of the par-5s but the rest of the round was forgettable scoring-wise. Beautiful course, lots of elevation changes and uneven lies. Beyond my skill level but I was in Maui so it wasn’t all bad.

I’m looking forward to watching the PGA event on TV next year so I can reminisce about my OOB shots while watching the pros bomb the ball down the fairway.

That's a tough course for avg players. Rarely have a flat lie and the wind is tricky.

Working on my game, got up to an 8.4 which is the highest in ten years. Been chipping and putting a lot and working on the downswing. Recently started hitting the kinds of shots I used to see and making more putts and the occasional chip/pitch which really changes your confidence level in golf.

Need help settling a dispute...

Last month I golfed with a buddy (John) and a co-worker (Mike). Mike had not golfed in several years so he borrowed some clubs -- an older Callaway set -- from his roommate (Brad).

At some point during the round, Mike found a brand new TaylorMade M3 pitching wedge. Mike was going to keep the club, but John insisted that he turn it in to the clubhouse. Mike was noncommittal about whether he would actually turn in the club, so John decided to take the club to the clubhouse himself. He gave them Mike's contact info and asked them to give the wedge to Mike if no one claimed it.

Fast forward to today. Mike tells me that his roommate Brad is saying that the TaylorMade wedge was his! They called the pro shop but someone had already claimed the club. Now Brad wants John to pay him $125 as compensation! He said "Since John took the club from Mike, that means that he stole my club."

Brad and Mike do not have John's contact info, and I don't plan to give it to them.

Do either of us have an obligation here? My instinct is to tell them to pound sand.

sounds like Mike is a thieving #### sucker and should be pounded for trying to steal the club and then trying to rip John off.

Last 3 rounds have been 86, 84, 85 for a couple of personal bests:

- never had 3 consecutive rounds in the 80s. 203 rounds, only 22 in the 80s.

- never broke 40 for 9 holes, the 84 was a 36 on the back 9 (all 4s).

- followed that up with a 39 on the back 9 today

- HCP down to all time low of 16.8

I think I’m getting better.

4th round of the year

I have zero touch with my wedges and putter right now

I was 6 over after 4 holes.  Shot an 81 :lmao:

I need to go hit balls

A week ago I watched the first 30 seconds of this clip over and over: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL_6M_xZvq0

Its Ben Hogan stressing the initial movement of the lower body to start the swing from the top. Its like his right elbow and right hip are moving in perfect sync at the start of the down swing. Feel like since this has been my focus I'm hitting all my irons so pure with that beautiful high gentle draw. The confidence I'm feeling standing over the ball is amazing.

Best round ever at my club yesterday.  Shot a 74 after doubling #1. Eagled 18.  Tough track though the tees were up some and played more from the whites than the blues.  Still I was really solid.  Putted great and after watching Cameron McCormick? on the golf channel I got closer to the ball with irons and moved my ball position up a bit.  Hit much higher shots and was straight.  Beautiful 80 degree day in So Cal too! I'm a 9.5 index and most of my rounds at this course are in the low 80's. Lowest before this was a 78 I think so I'll take it.

I've never heard not turning your hips.

Im a big Hogan swing guy.  I don't know anything about stack and tilt.

You rotate your hips just not as much as your shoulders

hips ~ 45, shoulders 90

You have to rotate your hips, is best not to limit that on purpose just to create more tension. The reason is you won't always be 18 and limber. You'll need that extra load up as you get older, without the extra tension on your lower back.

The feeling you should have is your right leg doesn't move or straighten in your backswing. You simply rotate back on that flexed right leg. Visualize a brick wall thigh high right behind your right leg.

Maybe. Probably. But when I was learning in the early 90's swing theory was very much not that. Check out what Brandell Chamblee said about it.

https://www.golf.com/instruction/brandel-chamblee-has-found-holy-grail-swing
I remember it being a hot topic 15-20 yrs ago. I think it was the idea that if your hips rotate only 20 but your shoulder goes 90 you've created 70 of rubber band to smash the ball with.  Sounds great and if you can create that kind of flexibility go for it. But you can generate plenty of power by just staying wide and going ahead and rotating a little. You can see it here https://www.golfdigest.com/gallery/swing-sequence-brooks-koepka

I played for 25 years before I got one. There is two guys at my club that have 25 total.
I have 2 holes in one.  On the same hole....a 110 yd par 3 at my dad's former country club in CHI.  The second one, I was playing with my dad and two other members.  Made the ace, and it forced my father to buy drinks at the clubhouse for the rest of the day (since I was a "guest" of my dad).  Luckily we were playing in the afternoon, so we finished at around 5pm, so it only cost my father about $500. :moneybag: .  I have heard stories of members making holes in one in big weekend tournaments and the bar tab was more than five grand.

Let's just say my father forced me to pay the $75 guest fee the next time we played..........

you're not morally obligated to spend $5000 for free drinks.   Buy a keg, set it out where people can drink off it and put a "free- hole in one" sign on it.   Or just give the money to the club/bartender and have them do the same thing

In an attempt to motivate myself to get back into it, I drove to Memphis a couple of weeks ago and got a lesson with a guy named Joe Mayo at the TPC course, Southwind.  I think he is from Tennesse originally but lives out in Vegas.  He goes by "Trackman Maestro" on the twitter.

Pricey, but I think he really helped.  I felt like I was never in a position at impact to really compress the ball like I wanted - he got me in a better posture and the right move to do so.  (think right leg base and left shoulder down)

Guy is good.  Also spent some time with a solid senior amateur named "Buzz" Fly who was on the range at the time.

Now I just gotta start getting back out there.

I had a cool experience over Labor Day. I've been struggling for years putting (despite help from @belljr).  Have determined i need to go back to a face-balanced mallet and focus on straight back and thru...simplifying.

So i'm driving around town in Highlands, NC and spot a Bobby Grace Putters sign in front of a random house on a windy mountain road. Pull over, and find Bobby in his lab welcoming anyone to come in and look around. I knew him sort of when he was supplying Nick Price the Fat Lady that won several majors back in FL...so we talked about mutual friends, etc. But then we got into my putting. He put me on a tracker, watching my path, ball roll, and mechanics. Helped me with shoulder turn, elbow position, take-away. Basically a 'free' putting lesson from a putting specialist.  I spent an hour there.

Of course i bought a putter...still getting used to gauging speed...but i'm rolling the ball differently than ever before.  The negative face loft a big help. Also love the bottom plate and alignment help.

He's sold and bought back his brand a few times now..but seems to be doing pretty well supplying the wealthy CC members in the area and getting back to FL for sponsored events.

Whats the saying? "You can put lipstick on a pig"    :)   GL!@#!@

LOOK AT ME!!!:  I was about ready to put the clubs away a month ago but due to 4-5 rainouts in my league, we were still playing through last Monday.  So a couple week ago, a buddy calls me and wants to arrange a weekday round at his club (Radrick Farms in Ann Arbor for you metro Detroit FBGs, an incredible course and tough).  I hemmed and hawed for a bit but said what the hell, let's do it.  My game sucks but the four of us can still drink, smoke a little, and have a good time.  the entire front 9 I'm hitting tee shots into the trees but every time I get to my ball, I have a somewhat decent shot at the green that I somehow pull off.  shoot a 37 on the front.  start hitting the ball straighter on the back and I begin to notice that I have a good shot to break 80.  The guy I'm getting a shot a side from was 3-under through 10 but I start clawing my way back, not really paying attention to what I'm doing, just trying to keep up with him.  Ended up shooting 75 after bogeying 16 and 17, tying my buddy who limped in with a 41 on the back, and shooting the best round I've played in the last few years.  I hadn't broken 80 all year except for combined 9-hole league scores so this was quite out of the blue.  NOW its time to put the clubs away.  Handicap down to 7.8 ?

Turf putting green?
artificial.   i'm not mowing that thing daily.

its a little slower than i'd like, but you can add more sand to speed it up, which i've been too lazy to do.

the main thing is i can go out there for 20 mins, working on technique and just the reps are good for your stroke.   I putted very well this year, especially under pressure.

Haven't posted in here in a while. I used to be a very good putter, but struggled all year with putting, especially short ones. I noticed the best players in our club putted using the claw. So I tried it. It has changed my game. I am a better putter than I have ever been. I now routinely make 3-6 footers when a 2 footer used to be a 50/50 putt. I have been putting that way for 2 months now and have a 68 during that time (9 handicap-mostly due to the 68). Obviously, other things went well for the 68, but I can honestly say, I don't think I missed a putt in that round. If any of you are struggling with putting, try the claw.

I tried it, now it's stuck. I honestly don't see how this helps anything.

A few buddies and I are gonna escape the Minnesota winter in February and spend a long weekend in Arizona golfing (thinking fly in Thursday night, fly out Sunday evening).

Anyone do this before and have any tips? Places to stay? Courses to golf? Package deals?

Budget is flexible but all in would like to spend less than a rack.

That's a fantastic story!!

I started playing golf at age 19 and have never been more than a weekend hacker.  A buddy of mine started playing about the same time I did.  He kept at it, practiced alot, played alot of golf.  He is probably 7-8 handicap now.  I played alot at times in the early years but then life got in the way.  Put away the clubs for close to 20 years.  A few years back, my buddy came to town and we went out and played 18 holes.  I played terrible, which was no surprise, but the 13th hole was a 175 yard par 3, teed it up and hit a 4 iron straight at the flag, lost it in the sun but heard a faint clank sound.  My buddy says "that hit the hole", and I thought no ####### way.  Drove up to the green, no ball in sight, sure enough it was in the hole.

I think my score that day was 118 lol :lmao:

So I go to this estate sale by my house yesterday.  Beautiful old home..I am walking around and really don`t see much. I ask the person running it if there is any sporting equipment and she says.  If you like golf go into the garage. The guy who lived here was an assistant pro for many years and avid golfer.   I go into the garage and it was like a pro shop. Brand new shirts still with tags on from course all over the place.  Too much stuff to even mention.  Every training aid you have even seen on TV.  I did not need any clubs but bought a Taylor Made bag that I looked up on my phone and it listed at 189.00.  Had been used very little.

I said how much do you want for the bag and the lady says..is 20 ok?  Yes..

Ended up buying 2 weighted Medicus training clubs for 5 bucks each. Bought this long pole like club with a weighted end for 3 bucks.

The guy has a bucket with at least 500 balls..lady says 3 bucks a dozen.  I found 2 dozen Pro-Vs and 3 more dozen top line balls that looked new.

Had a good unexpected golf find for around 50.00 total.

I already have 4-5 putters but there had to be 10 putters..Ping, Taylor, all top line stuff. I called 2 of my buddies and they went right over and cleaned up.

That’s totally Mike’s fault.

Yes. You’re coming at a time where weather is beautiful but prices are up with your types as the target. Pm me later or I’ll try to remember to make a longer post when I have the time.

Anyone who even thinks about keeping a found club on a course is a doosh.   I have found a number of clubs and range finder over the years and turned them in. In the last 2 years I lost my Cleveland 56 sand wedge and my Bosch range finder. I know I left my wedge somewhere in the fairway when it was cart path only and I had to take a couple of clubs..range finder I think I left in the cart when we finished at dark.

Nobody turned them in.

Tees are up at my club (around 6000, usually plays at 6400) due to the winter weather in Philly, but we managed to get out Sunday despite winds of 25 mph+.  Fired a 40-36, which was better than any round I had in 2018.  Really setting the bar high for 2019 I guess...

Maybe, or maybe just someone who doesn't understand golf and figures finders-keepers.

Many years ago I loaned my clubs to a friend who was going out with a group. Probably his 1st or 2nd time ever on a course. I was missing the 8 iron and my friend found one that someone left just off one of the greens. He thought I would appreciate the addition to my set. I let him that I understood the thought but clubs get separation anxiety and don't perform well if they're no longer part of their set. I returned the club the next day. Luckily it was only about a 40 minute drive.

I'm down here now.  I can give you some good ideas.  1st off, handicaps for you & your buddies?  Many package deals within 1/2 drive from the airport-some will pick you up.

We are not good golfers (handicaps in the 20s). Ideas are appreciated though!

Thanks Woz! You know that the price is never too high if it means getting even a short reprieve from a Minny winter.

Anyone ever demo-ed or play with those Cobra one-length clubs?  Somewhat bandwagony because of DeChambeau’s success, but the thought of each club being as comfy as my 7 iron really is inviting

Thinking about this putter.

I'm also thinking about getting a season pass again. Spring hit and the golf bug hit too. I was a little injured last year which made my summer stumble a bit but would not have those issues this year... I hope. The other putter I'm thinking about is an Odyssey one but have been playing that brand for awhile and when I used the Ping one, it is heavier and felt better.
