Not sure my ego can take from drop from a 4ish handicap back to a 9 or 10, though
Well. If you're 10 on the card and you play like a 4? Maybe your ego can't take it, but your wallet sure can 💵

Try that one on for size. And have a beer while you're at it.

The second is to embrace your alcoholism and play for the fun of it, hit driver on every hole, never lay up, fire at every pin, try to hole every chip, hit the back of the hole on every putt. By playing recklessly, you'll make more birdies - and more doubles - but your handicap will go up and you'll give less strokes come tournament time. You'll be a dangerous man that no one wants to play.

This might be the best advice ever given on this board.

finally back down to a 12.8 and marching in the right direction on my journey to single digits. I got down to a 10.8 and then of course decided to mess with my grip :bag: and ballooned up to a 13 but now I've seemed to put it together and am trusting my new shot shape. Once I get back down in the 10's I'll find something else to change so I can continue to **** up my game....

First round coming up at Oak Point. Very excited.
17 over 89. Played quite well but everything was a little fade/wipey to the tune of a full club. Drives a bit short. So played the back 9 trying to figure that out a bit since the whole point of a practice round is to practice.

It's definitely something to do with just being too tight. Loosen the grip a little, loosen the upper body a little, and stuff came back.

Had a birdie, 2 triples, and five pars. So overall not bad. Played to my handicap until the wind got my approach on the 18th for a penalty on basically an island green.

Bittersweet finish to what I will always look back on as an awesome last day at this job.

Won our morning scramble. Played excellent. As a team I think we played 1 over. 1 double, 1 birdie, 16 pars. Our opponents played 4 under. We won with the 7 strokes we got. Halved the front, up 1 on the back going into 17 (my self birdie on a par 3 was the difference at that point - put it to one foot from about 130), and used our last stroke to take that one with a par net birdie.

Afternoon, Ocean course. I came in saying "this is really hard. My course adjusted index is 20. So playing my best golf is theoretically a 92. If I break 100, I had a great day." It's best ball.

Well I say it was bittersweet because I shot a 96, which means I really did play well. We won the front nine by 2 largely because of me but it should have been 4. I just barely rolled through the green on 9 and into the wastey crap and double chipped and cost is the hole. Would have been up 4, match over.

Alternated playing well and terrible on the back. My playing partner finally had a 4 hole stretch of good golf but I had a quad on 10, out of the hole right away. Then halved like 3-4 holes with pars that were hard fought and a net birdie that the other team has an awesome approach to neutralize.

Finished triple followed by three doubles, lost the match by one as my partner picked up on three of the final four holes and didn't help either.

43 front 53 back.

I hated my caddie and need to learn to tell them no even if they're roasting you in a kind of rude way. I was a moron taking his advice with my brain off like ten times.

Today will be interesting. Modified Alt Shot this morning, but I'm our solo player vs 2. So I get two tee shots, then play the one I like best while they alternate. I get 9 strokes playing a guy the same as me and a woman scratch. So that's gonna be tough.

This afternoon I'm singles I play one of my best ball opponents. I'd have beat him yesterday in spite of my 96 to his 89 because mine came very concentrated on those couple holes. He's a good friend and an 7-8 index so I once again get 7 strokes (I'm a 14.4).

Excited! I'm 3.5-2.5 in my matches so far. Would like to stay to the positive.

74 yesterday to keep my team somewhat in the middle of pack for contention. A (+3) and B (0) players shot 77 and 79, respectively. I talked so much **** to them and that's why this game is great.

Keep it up Woz. Also keep in mind a little breakfast buzz loosens up the swing. good luck!

Flask of Jefferson’s in my back pocket.

I know you all care but I just won 2.5-0.5 points in the Modified Alternate Shot.

14 over, I got 9 strokes. Course handicap for me is 17 over so I played really well. Two tee shots is obviously a total game changer. Especially for me where I lose most of my strokes off the tee.

Won the front by 4 holes. Halved the back (took the match). Made a 40-footer to halve the back on 18 for the extra half point.

That is why there is a handicap system. Good job. that 40 footer must have looked sweet.

Still taking baby steps forward. Posted my 2nd best round of the year (I say "posted" rather than shot because I made a mess of the 3rd hole and was basically in my pocket. One drive OB right....reload...2nd drive in the face of a fairway bunker in an impossible lie.....4th shot OB again. Net Double is the worst I can post)

Even with that, I could have threatened 79 if I had just lag putted well. Got a little quick with the driver on the last hole but got lucky and it stayed in bounds. Was hitting low rockets basically all day. Tempo felt good.

Nice to leave the course actually feeling good. Wasn't really a thing for about 16 months.

What kind of wind have you guys been getting?

This game. Drove the ball great today in our pod game. Short game and putting excellent. Hit about 3 greens in regulation all today as ball striking with irons was horrendous. I’m talking with wedges to 6 iron in my hands from the middle. 2 way miss. Pulls. Weak flares into traps. So frustrating. Had no idea what was going on or how to fix it. Did stick one on 18 so I’ll take that with me to the next round/practice session but man this game can be so frustrating.

Sounds like you should quit

Par three course....one over par. All the holes were 60-90 yards. Did take 3 tee mulligans on the front and one on the back. Three over on the front, two under on the back. Chipped in from 30 yards on hole number one and drained 4 30+ footer putts. Funny thing was the greens were slow and so bumpy anything over 3 feet was luck. First time I've played in 2-3 years. My first round of the year is always the best and I get progressively worse. I've had rounds of 75, 76, 78, and 80 as first outing of the year but the more I play, I drift back to my 85-95 normal. It's all mental approach. Beginning of the year I envision every swing ending with a great result. A few rounds later I'm over the ball wondering which house I'm going to shank it off.

It was pretty windy, but the caddies said 4/10. It was at least a club on every hole maybe three at times on Ocean. Other courses were all about one club basically all day.

Won my singles match 2-1 on the 18th after losing the front nine.

I mean any true blooded serious golfer has quit once or twice in their career. Damn it
I'm about to quit.

I'm a 13 handicap, play maybe once a week. Probably in 80s as often as in 90s. So I get it. I suck.

Constantly chasing 79.

Decided to change my approach midway thru this season to be more conservative, try to eliminate penalties at all costs and just play smarter. And it was really working. I had several sub-85 rounds in a row.

Then I got new irons and the wheels have come off. I knew it would be an adjustment, but this just isn't fun for me right now.

I even tried to go back to my old irons. That didn't work either. I'm broken. Just shanks and duffs galore.

I'm so pissed off, which I know is stupid, unjustified and all the other stuff. Because I suck. But my suck was at least OK and in my group of 12 regulars, put me near the top.

I have dominated our annual Ryder Cup weekend. Have lost only one match in eight years. Have knocked off guys better than me regularly because I care and compete, etc.

And now it's killing me. I've been over 100 like 4 of last 5 rounds. Have walked off the course twice. Have almost gotten into fights on the course with both strangers and friends because I'm so frustrated.

And now our annual trip is this week. I'm hoping for some sort of miracle, but there's nothing to suggest that's gonna happen.

And so I'll likely be the reason my team loses. And that's going to eat at me.

I'm going to do everything I can to not be a baby and just drink and have fun like everyone else even if I play crappy.

But it's going to be very hard.
Winners win. Put your big boy pants on and go get it done.
Cue the Rocky montage!!
**** the Rocky montage. Go all Kenny Powers or Ernie MacCracken. You think they whined about trying hard and going through swing challenges? No! They went out and won and then slept with the prom queen.
Well, I got the prom queen.

I went 3-0 to help the team to an 8-4 win.

Modified alternate shot on Day 1. New format for us, and everyone loved it. Allows some different pairing options, which is always good in our 6-on-6 team competition.

Our fourth golfer and I were matched up against the other team's first and fifth golfers. Steamrolled them 5 and 3. Never in doubt. Played well. Club of the day was my driver, which I hadn't hit in 2 months.

We were up 2-1 after day 1 and decided to go ahead and put our top 2 against their top two in the scramble format. We were pretty big underdogs, but it would be fun, so we did it anyway.

My partner had been one of group's best golfers but got the yips at last year's tournament and went from his typical low 80s to like 120s. Seriously. Every drive in the woods. Every iron off the end of the club.

But he had played well this summer and got through Day 1 without the yips (in a loss).

We get off to a hot start and are 1 up after 6. And then on the 7th hole, he shanks one. Oh, ###$)&($. He didn't put another shot in play the rest of the match. So I was taking on their two best golfers by myself. Got it to 2 up, and my partner at least contributed some good putts. They just kept waiting for me to fall apart. And it was crossing my mind as well. But I just could not miss. Fairway. Green. Two putt.

Got it to 3 up and then they made a charge. Got birdies on 15 and 16 with a chip-in and a 35-foot putt to beat our pars.

So only 1 up going into 17 and they have all the momentum. 175-yard par 3. They're middle of the green about 15 feet away for birdie. My buddy shanks his again of course. I push my tee shot a little and it misses the green pin high. I'm short-sided. There's a burm between me and the green, and it's like what do we even try here? Not even sure how we can get it anywhere near the hole.

Partner shanks his off end of the club again. And I figure I have to be aggressive. I am terrible around the green with a wedge in my hand. No touch or confidence. So I've gotten something of a reputation bumping 9 irons from all over the place.

So I'm looking at this lie and the circumstances and I just refuse to lose because I tried a shot I know I can't hit. I figure if I can just bump a 9 iron to the top of the burm with a little pace, the rough wasn't that long and the course was pretty hard, it might have enough juice to trickle onto the green and maybe we get lucky.

Bump it to the top just like I'm trying, it slides down hill, onto the green right at hole, off the pin and in for the match victory.

The other two guys were just stunned. I thought my partner was going to cry.

Without the benefit of a single non-putt shot from my scramble partner after the 7th hole, we shot 74 and beat them 2 and 1. It was a moment.

We were up 4-2 heading into the 6 singles matches on Day 3. Put me in the anchor spot against my arch nemesis (we're good friends and pretty even ability). He got up 3 on me early but I kept grinding and hung around then buried him on the back half of the back 9. Won 2 and 1.

I guess I'm not quitting. For now.

Way to not suck.

74-76-78 from my end... for a whole lot of nothing.

Okay, maybe the thread title is accurate.

Super humbled to get the call in my club's interclub championship. Quickly got worked dialed in and got up today at 5:00 AM to get the work done and get dialed in. Big deal.

On hole one, opponent kind of dirtily (he's getting two from me) makes me putt a two footer for par. I go 200 degree lip out - in that it went all the way around and spit it out. He's up one and feeling good. I then rip off four birdies in a row and I fire off a personal best 69 - including a near canned ace (divot right on the lip) of the last hole to shoot the best round of my life 69. 6 birdies and 3 bogeys.

Partner and I went 9-0 in our match. We lost the whole championship by one but the legend is already set (getting voicemails and texts). I can now say I've shot under par and, given that I didn't make anything over twenty feet, I am capable of a 66.

69 for a personal best today. I like this game again.

I may cry. Just settling in. Nobody can take something with a 6 in front of me from me. And it wasn’t luck. Honestly could have been lower.

Feel like I could have hung with anybody in the world today. Not a bad golf shot in the bunch.

I feel like I'm going backwards. Locked in at 16 handicap which frankly I will take at this stage. I'm outside having fun and not working. But my last 3 rounds weren't good and my Sunday round was truly awful. The great drive, terrible approach, decent chip that I shouldn't have had to even try and missed putt for a tap in bogey is maddening.

Won my first round match of my club championship flight (a bunch of 12 and 13 handicaps)

Drove it like absolutely crap for most of the front 9 but scrambled my *** off. Played a little better on the back and closed strong but still nowhere near where I want to be. Gonna have to play better this weekend.

Still feel like it's 1 step forward 1 step back. Had an awesome driving round last weekend and felt like I had found a swing thought that was working. And then it just goes away

Price range? Time frame?
Winter break for a family of 3 (son is 14 and my wife and him both play). I'd like to play 3-4 rounds and stay 4-5 nights. Preferably under $8k or so.

Also, were in Colorado and would like to keep the flight time reasonable. No New Zealand!

Other people know way more about this than me.

That said:

Feels like you're staying domestic for those parameters. That means you're looking at California, Arizona, Florida. Maybe coastal Carolina? But even Texas, for winter break, is not gonna be amazing golf (unless someone tells me there's a bunch of Houston stuff thats not sub 50 degrees and is amazing golf - Dallas definitely isn't unless you get lucky with the weird 70s week in December that comes every year but you dont know which week it is in advance).

There are some awesome places in Phoenix that I played at on our "last pre baby guys trip" that @Zow can help identify. But we were paying an average of $300 pp/round, which 4 rounds * 3 people = ~$4k on green fees. Maybe thats fine. I imagine most nice places in FL that are publicly accessible will be similar.

Florida and Phoenix areas immediately come to mind.

For somewhat of a darkhorse, I really like Mesquite, NV. There are multiple nice courses there - most notable being Wolf Creek (though I think Conestoga and Coyote Springs are just as nice) - and you are a reasonable drive to the St. George courses like Sand Hollow, Coral Canyon, and Black Desert and the lodging is reasonably priced with gambling and a few decent restaurants to enjoy.

Pinehurst probably out. I would go but high of 50s and potentially frost.

Robert Trent jones trail in Alabama maybe. Play Ross bridge, and there are 2 other courses oxmoor..... If you go down there add pursell farm links. One of the nicest courses I've ever played. Top public in Bama

I think some of it depends on the level of golfer you have. You say your son and wife play but do they really PLAY? Obviously anyone is free to play whatever golf course they want to, but its hard to imagine a 100+ stroke golfer having a ton of fun at certain places or settings. Phoenix/Scottsdale is obviously AWESOME but trying to track down balls in the desert at Greyhawk (to the tune of nearly $400 per round in the peak winter season) may not be the best use of your time and money. Similar deal with some of the spots in Florida that seem to have water EVERYWHERE.

Obviously there are some easier and less expensive courses in Arizona, but just something to keep in mind while you plan. The "Best" golf courses may not be the best option for you guys.

And if all 3 of ya are sticks...ignore everything I just said.

Great advice here. If you all don't actually play (and golf is not the singular focus of the trip) then I'd suggest places like Vegas and Palm Springs where you just happen to play golf at easier resort courses while on vacation.

I guess I was feeling pretty good last night haha.
Celebrate when you can. This game will humble you more times than not. A few years ago I shot 67(4 under) at Trilogy(6400 yards) & celebrated till the cows came home. 2 days later shot 83 on the same course.

and if you are a masochist you can go play coyote springs :bag: I still think this may have been the most difficult course that I've ever played

Golf Vacation Advice needed:
My wife finally gave the go ahead to make our winter trip a golf trip rather than a ski trip this year. What site(s) would you recommend for booking a trip as a package?
Florida and Phoenix areas immediately come to mind.

Don't disagree there - it's a very challenging course (not a flat lie or green on the thing). But, it's a damn fine course.

I guess I was feeling pretty good last night haha.
Celebrate when you can. This game will humble you more times than not. A few years ago I shot 67(4 under) at Trilogy(6400 yards) & celebrated till the cows came home. 2 days later shot 83 on the same course.
Well, I went out almost immediate afterwards - because I was feeling great - and played our A player in a cash game from the tips (the 69 was from the regular men's tees). Shot an 81 and only made one birdie and lost $150. Told the player (he's my BIL and a regular playing partner of mine) that I felt taken advantage of.

Trilogy is the course we played, right? If so, that's a tremendous score!

I was never really good, coiuldn't even break 90. Finally brought my clubs to Germany so I can hit. Have a range pass good til the end of the year, working mainly on short game, need to buy a SW and a LW. LH but RH dominant. Just marking this thread for future reference

You do NOT need to buy a lob wedge. For any reason.
