The Tigers are bad. But nobody here even cares. There wasn't the typical opening day buzz that goes with the start of a new season. Nobody is talking about the Tigers at all.

I read an article on him that says he is built like Carlton Fisk, that he has an arm like Lance Parrish, that he hits for power like Johnny Bench and for contact like Yogi, and that he runs like prime Jason Kendall.

Maybe a slight exaggeration.

I care! When baseball season arrives, checking the Tigers' score and box score details is a daily priority for me. Last year was disappointing due to injuries and Torkelson not performing anywhere close to expectations. But I'm ever-hopeful that the rotation is stronger this year, Riley Greene and Tork continue to develop, and Miggy stays healthy and performs well in his final season. Can they be above .500 this year? :fingerscrossed:

My current quirk is, when Miggy does anything at the plate (as he did with a double last night), I check his status on the all-time stats list. Last night's hit, for example, moved him into a tie with Ichiro Suzuki for #23 all-time in hits with 3,089. He's sitting a ways behind Hank Aaron on the doubles list (but #14).

The radio guys seem to be having the hardest time with the new clock. They are used to filling tons of dead time between pitches that doesn't exist anymore. As they babble on about whatever, you can hear the ump make the call or the sound of the ball being hit in the background.

Totally agree. I watched just a couple of innings yesterday, but quickly realized baseball is watchable again. Add in more activity on the bases, and this should be enjoyable!

(But tonight is women's basketball - player of the year Caitlin Clark vs. undefeated South Carolina)

I can't watch/hear the Orioles where I live (unless they are on ESPN or Fox, which hasn't happened in 400 years). I only stream TV and I am considered "in-market" - even though I live 120 miles away from Baltimore with another MLB team in between - so I can't even stream the radio broadcast, with no OTA radio stations broadcasting near enough to pick up.

As impressive as he was on the baseball diamond, the most amazing thing I saw Adley do at the high school level came on the football field.

Before we go any further, something else unique about Adley, which still amazes me to this day, is that he throws a baseball right-handed, but he kicks a football left-footed.

That takes us back to the gridiron.

It was Nov. 8, 2015, and the Sherwood High School football team was hosting neighboring Tigard in a Class 6A second-round state playoff game. That night was miserable. It was rainy, it was windy, and it was cold — but the Bowmen were red hot.

Sherwood, getting big plays on offense and defense, jumped out to a 35-7 lead as the first half was winding down. The Bowmen had the ball on the Tigard 46-yard line when they called timeout with 2.9 seconds left in the second quarter. I was starting to look for a sheltered place to warm up and dry off during the halftime break when I noticed the Sherwood coaches gathered and, to the right, Bowmen senior Tanner Dillree hyping up his buddy, Adley Rutschman.

Yes, Sherwood was sending Rutschman out to try a 63-yard field goal to end the half.

Now, part of me still wanted to search out some shelter, but I knew that, like I said before, with Adley, something special could always happen. So, I stood in the rain and focused my wrapped-up camera on the spot where Sherwood quarterback/holder Adam Vasquez would put down the football for Rutschman to kick.

And, wow, did he ever kick it. There was a “thud” that could be heard over the rain. The ball took off, and sailed, and sailed, and sailed. It felt like it was in the air forever, until it sailed over the crossbar.

Absolutely amazing.

“I tried not to think too much. I stuck to what was working,” Rutschman told me after that game. “It felt real good. I saw it curve in at the last second. I couldn’t help but smile.”

Yes, Rutschman had a big wind behind him on that kick, but he still had to kick the football more than 63 yards, and he had to kick it straight for more than 63 yards. If you want to be impressed by that, go out to a football field, stand on the 47-yard line, and just look how far the goalpost is on the opposite end of the field. Yes, impressive. I was definitely impressed, but this was Adley Rutschman, so I wasn’t totally surprised.

Rutschman’s 63-yard field goal set an Oregon record, besting the previous mark of 57 yards by Sunset’s Paul Burton in 1991. Coincidentally, I was at the game when Burton made his long kick, so I’m guessing I’m the only person who has seen the two longest high school field goals in state history.

But as good of a kicker as he was — and I think that, if he focused on only that, Rutschman could have kicked at the highest level — his future was on the baseball diamond.

Without overstating things, he was a natural.
 
Roof will be closed tonight in Seattle, where it will be miserable and cold despite the cover from the rain. Last night, the bats were absolutely silent in Seattle. But I think the Over 7.5 is gettable tonight. Cleveland is trotting out something called Hunter Gaddis this evening - I tend to think this will wake up the Mariner lineup. At the very least, WhoRod needs to get on base and run. 0-4 last night, I think he fare better here.

I also don't think Robbie Ray is untouchable. Gonna play this one for a unit.

Mets v Marlins last night was awful, but fast. 2-1, 3 solo hrs and not much else. The shift rules don't seem to helping from what i've seen.

Braves radio guys just spend 10 minutes talking about why you call it a “tuna fish” sandwich when the fish part is redundant.

I'm betting on some offense today. Wind blowing out, Twins have a fly ball pitcher, and the Royals a bad pitcher. We'll see what the promos are but I got over 9.5 runs + hits from Salvy, Vinnie, Miranda, and Buxton teed up for +719.
 
Yeah, I'm taking some shots on some overs today. There are some AAAA pitchers on the mound today and I tend to think that'll wake up some wood. :oldunsure:
 
White Sox go 2-2 at the defending World Champion (sorry Japan) Houston Astros to open the season. That's pretty much the best-case scenario based on my own expectation (they were 1-8 in their last 9 vs. Houston).

Robert is an elite CF. Moncada is continuing the fire that was lit during the WBC, Colas is 5 for 14 to start off his career. I like how their offensive is trending if they can get some clutch hits with RISP. They left a bunch or runners on base this series.

The bullpen is really missing Crochet and Hendricks and need to step up. ReyLo has nasty stuff, he just needs to learn how to be a closer until Liam can come back.
 
Twins are going 162-0! :banned:Seriously, it was nice to see the offense finally wake up a little bit, but I thing this team is built around pitching, defense and depth. They over reacted a little bit to all of the injuries that hit them last year, but I will say it is nice having a good defensive CF so Buxton doesn't have to play in the field every day and can be in the lineup.

Also, every time I think I'd like to catch a game so far this year, the only game available is the dammed Yankees. ugh. Wish we could go back to Ted Turner putting his Braves on TBS for every game.
 
After the Brewers walk-off HR today, a few fans were voicing their opinion towards Buck Showalter.

I don't read lips very well, but it sure seemed they were saying: take that to the bank bromigo.

Twins pitching looking decent. Year 2 of attempting to get back into baseball a bit after like a 30 year layoff. Man I'm old. Is it too early to trade for some hitters?

Yeah I'm not nearly enough of a fan to pay for anything extra. Would just like to have a game on in the background or bet on one here and there - without it being just one or two teams always highlighted.

Twins hitting is deep right now. They have used their hitting depth to acquire the pitching that they have. Larnach, Krilloff, and Miranda look to be part of the next foundation as guys like Kepler and Polanco move on but there are quite a few unknowns with them right now. The AAA roster is loaded with bats (Lewis on IL, Edward Julian, Matt Wallner, Austin Martin) and there are some in AA who could possibly make the jump this year. Nothing is set in stone, but if these prospects pan out like they are supposed to, we could be looking a long stretch of very good baseball.

It's quite amazing to see it play out in real life. That owner is such a joke.
 
Facing a moral quandary.

Prior to season, I was pretty adamant that I wouldn't buy a tickets to a single Brewers game this year as a personal protest of sorts against Mark Attanasio giving away Josh Hader last season and for basically just being cheap and refusing to ever really go "all-in" and try to win a championship.

But now the team is 5-1 despite Yelich and Corbin Burnes sucking balls, and these young guys (Mitchell/Turang/Wiemer) are super fun to watch. Trying to stand firm, but it's getting harder by the day!
