***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

I'm not even watching the Oscars but saw the Smith/Rock thing on Twitter and came here to see what you guys think, lol.

Smith overreacted IMO to one stupid joke about Jada's hair.  I heard she has alopecia but still - you are a celebrity couple at an award show - you might get some jokes aimed at you.  One joke you laugh and move on.  If Rock had a barrage of Jada jokes then maybe I could see them getting upset, but one joke?  Total overreaction.
Yep.  He will get roasted for this.  It should have been the night of his life.  What a fool.

So, not staged?

Love to see CODA getting the recognition. Great flick.
I absolutely loved CODA. But Best Picture worthy?  I don’t know. That said, I don’t feel that strongly about the other nominated films I saw (other than feeling strongly that Power of the Dog should not have won).

Part of me thinks it could be staged - I literally didn't care about the Oscars at all tonight - so from that POV I guess it could be staged to make people more interested in a weird way.

But Will laughed initially and Jada was pissed which prompted Will to reacted - at least that's how I'm reading it.  If it was planned, I think Will would have acted pissed right away.

But what do I know?  I've only seen the 1 minute clip of the incident and still haven't turned on the Oscars

There's 0% chance that was staged.

He gave a horribly dumb speech.  And that’s attached to his award forever.

I hope snl roasts him

I wanted Kidman to win, but nice speech by Jessica Chastain.
Chastain was insanely overdue.

I watch every new film that wins Best Picture so I'm celebrating because now I don't have to waste my time with that likely pile of crap called Power Of The Dog. It will fall into the scrap heap with other depressathons like The Hours and Phantom Thread.

I don't forget Shakespeare in Love. One of the biggest piles of s*** to ever win an Academy Award.

Saving Private Ryan should have won all of the Academy Awards that night. I'm still miffed

Smith really tarnished his night.  More people will talk about the slap than his win.
True enough, but how long do people talk about best actor wins? This is going to be talked and joked about forever. In the realm of there is no such thing as bad publicity this will be huge.

He definitely should not have gone up there and slapped him of course. No matter how in bad taste Rock's joke was or whatever bad blood may have existed before this.

Yeah, I did not feel that strongly about any of the films for best picture, but happy that it won. Its ending is a bit predictable, even well-told and original in its focus. I thought most of the nominees were fairly weak this year — I think the pandemic delayed what would usually get and a bit of a down year for films.

I was definitely pulling for Kotsur for Best Supporting Actor though. Well-deserved.

I just got the joke that fired Smith up.  Smith is a thin skinned jackass.

Chris Rock should have started riffing about the rapper she was shagging.  Full on standup.

First time we watched the Oscars as a family with my 11 and 8 year old kids, who I scold constantly for fighting, even though never more than just rough-housing. "Violence is not the answer."

They couldn't believe what happened on the tv, and neither could I.

29 year old me would have laughed at the stupidity of that whole thing, 49 year old me feels like Hollywood can go you-know-what itself.

Agree 100% on the bolded. He was fantastic.

Post-slap Rock said something like 'I could' then waved it off

Took that to mean he had plenty of other material to fire off if he chose to

Life long fame, privilege and wealth did that in my opinion.   Entitlement is a powerful drug.
He's also at the point in his career where he is no longer the hottest name in town and is not getting first crack at the big budget scripts. He's getting offered a lot of "Dad" type of roles--like the role he won for.

It is not a new phenomenon. John Wayne was about the age Smith is now when Charlton Heston, James Dean and Marlon Brando began to make their mark, and he was infamously bitter about it, and made no apologies for his behavior.

And that Liza Minelli ending. Come on. Preserve her legacy a bit. That was uncomfortable.

In any case, the Oscars are a disaster. More of a show to watch to see what kind of crazy crap happens than a show to watch to honor artistry. Though I'll say the Coda actor's acceptance speech was outstanding.

But conversely, The Godfather commemoration was a disaster.

I'm not even sure why you guys are even watching them. Those people hate every single one of us between the coasts.

These guys give themselves so many awards that I'm surprised they actually have time to make any movies. What a bunch of pretentious #######.

Three old guys doing the 25 yard mosey across the stage hoping they don't fall

For me the best part of Coda was that you could feel the love these people had for each other and the despair and hopelessness they had. So yea it was a bit formulaic but it set up that wallop of an ending with her song - really packed a punch for me. Not every movie has to be super original as long as it can resonate emotionally.

I want to hear what Rock says.  I hope he's a better man than me because if I was him Jada, the Rapper, whomever else she's f'd and Will would be a key part of every one of my standup routines.  I would do an HBO special just on them.  Was it an insensitive joke? Yes.  Would it have been glossed over without a 2nd thought if he didn't do anything? Yes.  Have there been 100X worse jokes at the Oscars? Yes.  Would many people not even have gotten the joke? Yes.  He went farther than Kanye.  That's hard to do.  For all the black people he tried to be a "vessel" for - well, he f'd that up in the worst way.   What an idiot.  Hope he has a miserable night and even worse fallout.

Yeah, trainwreck night. Minelli, the P Diddy Godfather tribute, Wanda Sykes, Schumer, and Regina Hall were awful (and couldn’t keep the politics out which the Academy has been trying to do for a while.) The Gospel happy dancing In Memorial. Not showing SLJ’s lifetime achievement award. Having a song and dance number for a song that wasn’t even nominated. Nipslips.

Will Smith losing control will make it the most talked about Oscars in years but the rest of the broadcast was pretty awful.

wait what
They had Puff Daddy intro the 50 year anniversary of The Godfather, they then showed a 30 second or so montage of clip’s from all 3 movies while playing a medley of Puff Daddy songs before he introduced Pacino, Coppola, and DeNiro. I #### you not, that’s what they came up with to honor the 50th anniversary!

When I saw the Rock/Smith clip I thought it was a stage slap. After reading the comments I guess not. Either way, it would have been better for Smith to use a glove and challenge Rock to a duel.

You absolutely have to be joking :lmao:

Tomorrow morning someone is going to write one of the worst blogs ever and be Main Character for a day. I have no idea what the take will even be, but it’s a lock. Stay frosty
😆

Wow.

So I didn't see the part where Smith laughed at the joke and then saw his wife upset about it.  If that's the case, he was effed either way.

Do nothing, she'll be pissed that he laughed and just sat there.  So he chose plan B.
