***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

P. Diddy essentially said we should aspire to the qualities displayed in movies about the mafia and nobody is even talking about that.
Did he? That's because we expect so little out of rappers as people that we just shrug and accept the violence that they bring to those around them and their communities. Hey Puff, B.I.G. and Tupac are dead for a reason.

The soft bigotry of low expectations.

Anyway, some of the takes in here are gobsmacking.

if this was fake, then it was a level of planning and genius I've never seen before, and they certainly got me.

Like simey said, the way this comes off is so bad.

LAPD keeping open assault charge on Smith and might press charges, according to KTLA today. That's how real it looked.

Will Smith's career was already in decline, but, he's done real damage to a specifipart of his brand. Ever since the Fresh Prince/DJ Jazzy Jeff days, he's always been marketed as a "safe" black man for white middle America. For good or ill, that was his niche. Few black men get lead roles in major movies. Even fewer get lead roles as romantic interests for white women in mainstream Hollywood films. He was at that level. I don't think any studio will be backing him at that level again. And I'm not sure if there's currently another black actor who can step up there just yet. Awful to see him throw that away.

Idris Alba is the top black actor right now IMO.

I'd agree he's probably the most likely to be able to step up to the level I described. Being British definitely helps. I don't think there's another black actor in reach.
Kevin Hart is pretty safe but he’s more a gimmick.  I don’t really know any others.

It's an awards show, it is supposed to be somewhat masturbatory.
Yes. If you are tuning in, aren't you on board?

The Oscars has never been my thing, I don't know many of the people, but the whole spectacle, and the red carpet thing, I see why people like it, and it should all be a celebration, right?

The guy is a nominee for Best actor, it's his night. Let's make fun of his wife's medical condition. Why was that joke chosen??

This is a different discussion than Will Smith smacking anyone. That was indefensible.

Maybe there's an Oscars Reddit where women all complain about the televised NFL Draft, and how self-important all these ex-jock DBags are.

Maaaan, I don't think this is gonna hurt his career at all.

Who's really going to stay upset about this? Standup comics? He's Will Smith, everyone likes Will Smith.
I honestly think he did it to head off cuckold jokes that were sure to be forthcoming.  It’s not going to matter.

This is kinda where I was going overall. Not my thing, but there are plenty of movie/fashion/celeb nerds out there.

Tangent to the bold, it annoys me how much the networks are spotlighting off the field or family illness/deaths during recent drafts. It's like they have to drag up something negative instead of just celebrating the accomplishment of getting drafted. More highlights, less drama please!

I would have thought that too. But per the NYTimes, everyone was still able to jump to their feet for a standing ovation.
When people around you give a standing ovation you kind of just go along with it, no? I see that standing O as more of a social compliance situation. Plus, standing ovations are generally the norms for those big trophies. Again, imagine being in that room when the slap happened. The whole thing would have been so confusing especially if you weren't near that area of the theater. Easy to sit here now and say you would have sat on your hands.

It looked fake to me for 2 reasons.  Cameras initially cut to Will laughing at the G.I. Jane joke but Jada may look mildly peeved.  People have suggested she goaded Will into approaching the stage, or she reminded him of his cue.  He then sauntered towards Chris like he was approaching a wrestling ring.  Chris patiently waited and sold the slap well.

It seems to be receiving negative coverage in the media.  I think they will come clean soon.

People still saying it’s fake despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary are half a step away from QAnon. There is zero reason will smith and rock would fake that, doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny at all.
honestly this needs to be on autoloop, reposted / quoted every 8-12 posts

I understand social peer pressures and going along with the crowd.

But that's also how mobs work.

I don't have the video so I'm not sure how widespread it was but that's a pretty gross look for the crowd to give the guy who just assaulted another guy onstage a standing ovation a few minutes later.

Lol, I didn't realize I was approaching QAnon turf by thinking these two guys had engaged in a stunt.

Chris's behavior after the slap appears genuine but these are accomplished actors.  There were aspects to the slap that looked like a skit to me.  Have Smith or Rock spoken publicly about it?  That would go a long way towards clearing it up for me.

Yeah, I really have little interest in it personally. If I were up for an award, I'd certainly prefer it to be a self-indulgent celebration than having some comedian take shots at me though.
Taking shots? C'mon. It was a relatively harmless joke that nobody would have remembered 3 minutes later. Since the beginning of time hosts of that show poke fun at attendees and the industry. Everybody has a good laugh and then parties afterwards until dawn. Smith's reaction was so ridiculous and over-the-top that the only thing you can think is the guy is not well.

If a great like Chris Rock or Bob Hope or Don Rickles or whoever made a joke about me I'd laugh the loudest and wear it as a badge of honor for life.

If it were fake it would have been much smoother.

Also, there's no way Chris Rock is that good of an actor

All the fellow nominees are sitting around him. They've all done the award show circuit, junkets and everything else for months now. The night is supposed to be a coronation for him, a celebration of his career pretty much. So the slap happened and people are confused and stunned. Some of his friends tried to calm him down, diffuse the situation. They showed him some grace and empathy in maybe his worst moment, one that happened in front of millions of people. When he won they stood because, in part, that's what you do so you come off supportive and don't look like a bitter loser. Then some other people stood. (FWIW the post speech reaction was pretty tepid. And a few after interviews of people saying they weren't exactly sure what happened.) These weren't the people on the side of the freeway cheering on OJ during the slow speed chase. These were friends and colleagues simply trying to navigate though an awkward, insane moment.

Funny thing just happened to me...Started watching last night's episode of Killing Eve, recorded from BBC America (aired @ 8 pm PDT)

The recording caught a few moments of the last thing aired just before Killing Eve started:

GI Jane

Reminds of when I noticed my son in law watching Sahara the other night. I say to him does Penelope Cruz do much anymore, then I see she's nominated for Best Actress. I'm out of touch.
Yes. Whatever else is happening with these actors careers, their success is being decided by people other than people in this thread.

But he did it defending his wife. And he slapped versus a closed fist punch so it doesn't seem as violent....more of a warning shot.

That in itself will still hold his appeal to women as an "honorable thing".   They'll surely be able to spin that narrative moving forward.

100%

It would have been weird if they didn't.

I’m not going to stay upset mainly because I haven’t been upset to begin with. However, like I said before, I’ve always liked Will Smith and thought he seemed like a cool guy. Now he’s probably forever an ##### in my book, especially if he doesn’t address it (assuming he hasn’t yet - I’m just catching up).  I don’t go to the movies so he’s not missing out on my box office $$ but I won’t bother to catch any of this movies once they are streaming.

why are some people (not necessarily on this board, just in general) acting like Alopecia is some horrible disease?

It's hair loss.  It doesn't make you sick.  People lose hair all the time for many different reasons.

Also, there is no evidence Rock even knew she had it.  Even if he did who cares.

It was a lame joke regardless if he knew or not, just dickish if he knew.

Will Smith lost his mind though and turned it into some epicly bizarre thing.

:lmao:  he won best actor last night
He's not making big tentpole blockbusters anymore. Little movies with limited appeal and small audiences is a decline from the heyday. "I Am Legend" was 15 years ago. Since then... Suicide Squad wasn't a big hit, the rest of his stuff is either rehash sequels, bombs, or small films.

I'm specifically referring to him as being a "bankable" lead for a blockbuster. Those days were definitely waning, and may now be gone for good.

Yeah, I almost addressed this.  None of you bastards or people IRL gave a damn when my male pattern baldness struck.  Jokes everywhere.

I’LL SLAP A #####!!!

How many people do you think googled “Alopecia” today?
