***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

why are some people (not necessarily on this board, just in general) acting like Alopecia is some horrible disease?

It's hair loss.  It doesn't make you sick.  People lose hair all the time for many different reasons.

Also, there is no evidence Rock even knew she had it.  Even if he did who cares.
And black women wear wigs all the time now and nobody bats an eye.   It's actually become a fashionable thing to wear an expensive wig to allow to constantly change up a look.   She chose to rock it bald in front of millions so it can't be that huge of an emotional issue for her.

But he did it defending his wife. And he slapped versus a closed fist punch so it doesn't seem as violent....more of a warning shot.

That in itself will still hold his appeal to women as an "honorable thing".   They'll surely be able to spin that narrative moving forward.
Right.

I'm supposed to believe that women are going to be out there like, "not cool, Will, comedians are supposed to be able to make fun of everyone!"

Nah

I expect better from Rock. Not his best material.

My prediction:

Smith issues a public, on-camera apology on social media. It will be very thorough and personal. Think the Tiger Woods press conference apology but with personality and more truth. He'll follow that up with an hour long sit down with Oprah in the coming weeks where he discusses counseling.

The Academy issues a harsh rebuke and hands down a stiff penalty but it does not include having him return the Oscar.

Chris Rock says nothing more until his next comedy special, one that will be hilarious and no-hold-barred.

This all seems reasonable.

Well they mostly handled it fine at event. Laugh and move on. At least that’s what I remember. I don’t remember his exact jokes but I think he’s an ##### generally. I just don’t get why the award show for an industry would used as a way to roast all the people being honored. It would be like bringing a comedian to the NFL Hall of Fame to make jokes about Ray Lewis’ involvement in a homicide, CTE and   Kareem Hunt’s domestic abuse.
Interesting.  You and I agree on a ton, but I guess not this.  In the last 4-5 years he's grown into one of my favorite people to listen to.   Love him on pods like Sam Harris' and the like talking about how much is an act and how he views comedy.

But the women hosts are just fine joking about how the virus period really aged and uglified Timothy Chalamet and then cut to an old bald weathered looking J.K. Simmons to a stadium of laughter. Ok then.

Yeah life isn't fair in comedy and it doesn't make sense half the time.

Example from last night: The bit where the one comedian woman was pulling the men upstage and talking about banging them and patting them down was super creeper and bizarre that Hollywood types would laugh about this was odd.

Personally I'd prefer it to be comedy and people do whatever they want but it's tricky...and you have to actually be funny which isn't going to always happen.

I don't think giving the guy a standing ovation is the best way to navigate there but thanks for explaining how you see it.
You're basing everything off one line in the NYT article. Some people stood. This was not a blood thirsty mob cheering him on.

I would also argue "but thanks for explaining how you see it" is not exactly being excellent.

    What in the world are you talking about? I always appreciate different perspectives on how people see things differently than I do.

And I'm thankful they explain how they see it as I can have a better picture of how people see things. That's one of the primary benefits of this forum.

Chris Rock has made a movie about how sensitive black women are about their hair. He knows, better than any of us, how that joke might land.

Her being black actually compounds the issue of making fun of someone with alopecia.

It came off a bit condescending. I probably read too much into it. Thanks for clarifying.

I can almost guarantee not a single person here would have even referenced that joke had nothing been done.

It wasn’t ‘Oprah - Uma’ ‘Uma - Oprah’ worthy.

Didn't have a problem with the joke but I can see how Jada was offended. However, based  on what we've seen in the last few years, when you sit in the front row you have to expect to be targeted and sometimes you won't like it. While not an appropriate response, I don't think the slap was particularly brutal and Rock handled it well physically as well as verbally.

I kinda feel bad for Will Smith as it wouldn't surprise me if Jada is just as mad about turning it into a spectacle that will have a longer life than the joke.

I expected better from Rock because it wasn't funny. How old is GI Jane? Like 30 years?

Pretty sympathetic crowd. A lot of actors who have probably dreamed of slapping some comedian, journalist, paparazzi, critic, online troll, etc. It was just so surreal for where it happened. Someone making fun of someone and then getting slapped isn't too crazy but to happen at that stage with all those people trapped there having to "go on with the show" was so disorienting.

Not reading all 24 pages. But why was Smith not arrested even if Rock didn't press charges?  Live video shows the assault.  Crazy times we live in.

I really don't know, is it common practice to arrest one adult male for slapping another if there is no desire from the victim to press charges and no injuries?

The funny thing is, I believe that Rock was purposely toning it down and that's why it wasn't that funny.  He could have used a whole lot worse than GI Jane.

You mean the movie about the woman who overcomes all odds and kicks ### in a male dominated, elite fighting unit?  That movie?  The one that is basically a walking ad for Women's Empowerment?  Smith got upset over THAT?  What a dbag.

Smith needs to be expelled from the Academy and have his award taken away.

I'm guessing he got upset because his wife can't grow her normal hair because of this issue and it is a big deal in her life coupled with a little history between them already. I don't think the joke by Rock was meant to call her badass it was that she was bald.

The whole thing was crazy and odd and Will Smith should offer up something more than his speech to explain it...or not and just see what happens. I'd guess he talks about it more for sure.

It's alopecia - not some debilitating disease like cancer.  Rock didn't even know I bet.

Celebrities are changing hairstyles every other day and Pinkett has always worn her hair short.  IF that is his excuse, it's weak and still uncalled for.

Maybe, so long ago I don’t even remember what the movie was about except Demi shaved her head. It wasn’t funny and it didn’t warrant that response either.

Who knows what Rock knew. It was a weak response from Will for sure.

I hadn't really thought about him giving up The Oscar. That would be odd I think, I mean he won it already, but the Academy probably has to make some statement about this.

At first when I found out about this incident my initial reaction was who TF cares?!  But then I’ve read more, watched more, read even more opinions/theories, and man if this isn’t one of the most entertaining social experiments ever…regardless of real or fake, because each scenario presents its own fascinating reactions and meanings after the moment.

If fake:  Hollywood just watched and allowed assault (we can bring in black v black, that’s certainly an element here) live on stage during their event celebrating themselves AND the assailant won the biggest award.  To do absolutely nothing in response, regardless of how shocking, is 100% in opposition to most their messaging and professed image of the last decade plus.  A fan does this?  Charges filed/jail time imminent

If real:  Hollywood just watched and allowed assault (black v black again) live on stage during their event celebrating themselves AND the assailant won the biggest award.  To do nothing in response, regardless of how shocking, is 100% in opposition to most of their messaging and professed image of the last decade plus.  A fan does this?  Charged filed/jail time imminent.

Fake and they rather explicitly condoned/promoted violence and toxic masculinity.  Real and they rather explicitly condoned/promoted violence while ignoring a pretty clear mental episode from one of their own…shocking moment either way when it happened, what happened or lack thereof after speaks volumes and I’m sure we’ll be blessed with much introspective videos and promos over the coming weeks.  But I am fascinated all the same.  Adults were clearly not in charge that night

ETA:  obviously all the above is purely IMO and how I’m dissecting the incident and aftermath

Pretty much anything with entertainment can be in the TF cares honestly.

However, all the stuff you wrote about on top of a bunch of other stuff made this one of the wilder things I think I have seen happen on live TV.

There's no way this was faked.

I've heard many question Will Smith's motives for doing what he did last night.  But the most plausible explanation I have read about so far is that he's trying to get on The Expendables 4.

I'm not going to read this whole thread. First a little back story. I have a customer who is a talent buyer and knows some Hollywood talent and actually knows a few people close to both Chris Rock and Will Smith. Another is a good friend of mine from HS who's colloboratted and produced some Philly Rapper Meek Mill's work since he's been out of jail, he also wrote the TV Theme intro to Fox's Empire and does some small production. He worked on Silver Linings Playbook with Dinero and Cooper and was invited to parties of Tyreese Gibson who was late actor Paul Walker's best friend.

Anyway there's been tension with Will Smith and Chris Rock since 2O16. At the time Will went to Rock and asked him to please keep his wife's name our of his mouth and to not cross the line on personal family issues. A lot of people in Hollywood who knew both defended Will because Chris Rock has crossed the line a number of times on jokes involving others and had been told before about toning down some of the personal jokes on people. This doesn't make Chris a horrible guy just that he uses material that gets cheap laughs anymore. Rock hasn't been legit funny in yrs so he results to these little personal jibes on others. Jada came out on Social media in "18 saying she had this and the mental and physical emotional battle she's struggled with. With all this said Chris Rock went too far last night which is why Will Snapped.

Had this not been the OSCARS and not broadcasted on live TV there'd have been quiet a few of the others there that would've stood and cheered for what Will did. However do to the social nature of this and all a lot of them really couldn't. I would say Smith did a good job standing up for his wife and I think if the academy bans him they are hypocrites especially with all the producers and other sexual predators and misogynists similar to Harvey Wienstine they know about who they continue to allow in Hollywood and at the awards. If I were the academy I'd tell both parties they are banned from attending the awards next year and both can be invited back the next year if they behave themselves. The Academy is probably happy because the award ratings have been plummeting for awhile and this has people talking now.

Finally Will Smith did what I'd hope any male spouse would do for their wife/GF/Fiancee etc and that is stand up for her. Should he have slapped him? Probably not, but standing up in front of the show and yelling at him go for it. Knowing some of the stuff I do about Chris Rock and Will Smith I can't say I feel sorry for Chris in this situation. He was told by someone husband to keep his wife's name out of his mouth nor speak of her. At the time of the initial words Will was pretty respectful with the whole thing. Rock went against another man's plea. Like the saying goes Play Stupid games win stupid prizes.
