***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

I wonder if the following become a bit of a trend with celebrities and athletes:

1. Hitting someone when you feel a loved has been disrespected

2. Roasting jokes become off limits

I’m not saying this is going to sweep the land.  But something as newsworthy as this is bound to have an effect.  I didn’t like the joke, but it was just a joke.  Humor is almost dead in this country as it is, and I see this as frosting things even further.

I'm not going to read this whole thread. First a little back story. I have a customer who is a talent buyer and knows some Hollywood talent and actually knows a few people close to both Chris Rock and Will Smith. Another is a good friend of mine from HS who's colloboratted and produced some Philly Rapper Meek Mill's work since he's been out of jail, he also wrote the TV Theme intro to Fox's Empire and does some small production. He worked on Silver Linings Playbook with Dinero and Cooper and was invited to parties of Tyreese Gibson who was late actor Paul Walker's best friend. 

Anyway there's been tension with Will Smith and Chris Rock since 2O16. At the time Will went to Rock and asked him to please keep his wife's name our of his mouth and to not cross the line on personal family issues. A lot of people in Hollywood who knew both defended Will because Chris Rock has crossed the line a number of times on jokes involving others and had been told before about toning down some of the personal jokes on people.This doesn't make Chris a horrible guy just that he uses material that gets cheap laughs anymore. Rock hasn't been legit funny in yrs so he results to these little personal jibes on others. Jada came out on Social media in "18 saying she had this and the mental and physical emotional battle she's struggled with. With all this said Chris Rock went too far last night which is why Will Snapped.

Had this not been the OSCARS and not broadcasted on live TV there'd have been quiet a few of the others there that would've stood and cheered for what Will did. However do to the social nature of this and all a lot of them really couldn't. I would say Smith did a good job standing up for his wife and I think if the academy bans him they are hypocrites especially with all the producers and other sexual predators and misogynists similar to Harvey Wienstine they know about who they continue to allow in Hollywood and at the awards. If I were the academy I'd tell both parties they are banned from attending the awards next year and both can be invited back the next year if they behave themselves. The Academy is probably happy because the award ratings have been plummeting for awhile and this has people talking now. 

Finally Will Smith did what I'd hope any male spouse would do for their wife/GF/Fiancee etc and that is stand up for her. Should he have slapped him? Probably not, but standing up in front of the show and yelling at him go for it. Knowing some of the stuff I do about Chris Rock and Will Smith I can't say I feel sorry for Chris in this situation. He was told by someone husband to keep his wife's name out of his mouth nor speak of her. At the time of the initial words Will was pretty respectful with the whole thing. Rock went against another man's plea. Like the saying goes Play Stupid games win stupid prizes.  

He handled it all wrong. Just all wrong in every way.

Handle it after the show. I lost a lot of respect for Will Smith. I thought he was better than that. 
 

I don’t have a problem with a man defending his wife….. bit this is the ****ing Oscars, you are most likely also going to win an Academy for Best Actor….just really the wrong place and wrong time to address it.

He knows he made a massive mistake in judgement. It will be talked about for years….I still think he is a terrific actor. But I lost respect for him in how he handled this.

The Oscars have been doing this for decades. Roasting jokes have not always been part of it, and the very definition of a roast is the guest of honor agrees to the roast.

This was not a roast, so classless jokes about the spouse of one of the nominees really shouldn't be expected, and Rock getting crap for it really isn't the death of comedy. 

I think it's dumb that comedians get some sort of free pass. You can't be funny without being nasty, and taking a cheap shot, then maybe you aren't that funny.

Apparently Rock tried to do that from the stage. I saw some pics that looked like that, or he was at least putting his hand out to Smith like "we good".

The more detailed of this response I could go into in the political thread. However the it's basically that cops know these people have good lawyers. You aren't going to get someone arrested with money. A really good celebrity lawyer will find someway to get the charges dropped plus cops here don't want to piss off the wrong people. If this was Joe Schmo at some HS rewards event punching someone even if charges weren't pressed in a fairly middle class neighborhood the cops would be all over this. 

Short version that is appropriate fr the non PF portion of the board is basically Rock and Smith have money and cops don't want to piss off the wrong people. This is no different then Tommy Lee and Kid Rock fighting at the music awards over Pam Anderson yrs ago. Cops weren't getting involved with that unless someone pressed charges. 

Chris Rock also knew he F'd up and was probably advised by his legal and PR team had he done that he could make the situation worse. Given how society is these days it's surprising it hasn't happened yet but someone would surely bring up the fact of Rock's multiple jokes involved N Bombs and other stuff too. If I was on Rock's legal and PR team I'd have advised him not to press charges either.

Wouldn't shock me if they start the show like an hr earlier now and go to a tape delay version to prevent these things and edit it.

This isn't a good look considering his wife has been cheating on him and publicly embarrassed him on live TV a couple months ago.

I don't mind people roasting others in a respectful manner. However this crossed the line. This was a guy making a joke about someone else's condition that he was told by another man not to joke about his wife and she was off limits. As a comedian Chris Rock should know that rule well. He hasn't been funny in years and in the past 6-8 yrs as subjected himself using old issues and personally attacking certain people. it's not that funny and this definitely crossed the line. Rock was trying to get some cheap laughs at the expense of someone who he knows came out publicly about 4 yrs ago stating the mental and physical stress they've went through. This was after he was told to keep said person out of his jokes. 

I do think this will make people question the jokes now but I don't think this will completely stop them. Chris Rock wasn't using good humor in this regard.

I saw the movie back in the day when they played it on TV like USA Network or whatever. However my generation and others have been using GI Jane as an insult to people for awhile. Like your momma jokes and other things. So no it hasn't been deemed as a compliment for awhile.

Joking about someone's illness and fact that they have publicly stated the mental and physically stress they went through actually makes you a jackass. Honestly if someone tried to joke about someones issues like that as cheap laughs I'd kick their ###. You don't know what someone's been through. Again Smith asked Rock to refrain from jokes about his wife yrs prior. Rock knew exactly what he was doing. It wasn't funny. This is no different then trump making fun of the handicapped reporter so I guess I'm not surprised people defending Rock here considering how Trump's comment should've ended his canidancy right there but didn't. People have a sick mindset in this country what a joke is. 

As someone who deals with issues myself in terms of abnormal issues I wouldn't take any of those things lightly.

I don't think it was. I think it was about her and Will's personal marriage issues. I know there was a story on it but I heard from my friend Will respectively went up to him at some point either after the show or the next time they met to please keep his wife and his personal business private and it wasn't something to joke about as both were going through a tough time dealing with it. There's been a lot of tension since but like I said Chris Rock hasn't been funny for awhile and has resorted to more personal attack jokes using old events as he can't come up with good funny material without dropping N Bombs and other stuff anymore.

Mcdonald's first skit is about his most inappropriate promoter stopped the showed and booted him and refused to pay him.

No idea, to be honest.  I get the thinking that comedians get too much of a pass at times for saying anything and everything all "in the name of comedy," but this crack wasn't bad or offensive at all.  I doubt Rock thought it was, which is why he said, "Come on, that was a nice one," when the crowd didn't react overly positive to it.

Yeah, and a friend I have had for over 30 years ran a local comedy forum for over 10 years and got some pretty big names in there at times and thinks this whole thing is nothing, but I do not play the "Yeah, but I have a friend who says this, that and the other" in every thread you like do.

Exactly, but this is where we are now.  Everyone is offended by something, so no matter what you say, someone is bothered by it.  Had Rock gone after the Smiths for their open marriage stuff, that would have been a bit over the line, even though it would have been fair game since they have put it all out there for everyone to know about it, but, again, I suspect Rock thought the hair joke was fairly harmless, which it should have been.
