Gates played with his injuries in Week 14 and rarely misses a game. He's expected to play against Detroit and is worth waiting for if you can secure his backup, Brandon Manumaleuna, or a TE in a late game. Rivers will likely be a game-time decision, and his inconsistency makes him difficult to rely on.

FoxSports.com believes there’s a legitimate chance that Antonio Gates will miss Sunday’s game.

Gates owners need to have alternatives during the late games. We probably won’t know until the late game inactives around 3:30.

 
From yesterday's SD Union-Tribune . . .

Gates, Goff betterIt appears right guard Mike Goff is moving closer to playing, and tight end Antonio Gates' bruised back is improving too. Goff, who has been playing with a foot strain for several weeks, returned to practice yesterday after missing Wednesday. He expects to make his 88th consecutive start Sunday. Gates, who played through a severe back bruise suffered in Sunday's first quarter, did not practice again yesterday but is expected to today (meaning Friday).

And from Thursday . . .
Six other Chargers did not practice: defensive end Luis Castillo (ankle), tight end Antonio Gates (back), guard Mike Goff (foot), linebacker Shawne Merriman (knee), fullback Lorenzo Neal (leg) and nose tackle Jamal Williams (ankle). It appears all but Gates and Goff will miss the Detroit game.

Fox sports is saying/belives there is a legitimate chance he could miss todays game. What's Gates injury?

Clayton just said Gates is more shaky than Rivers to play. And if they clinch this week they may rest him next week :goodposting:

:popcorn: I'm in the playoffs in 4 leagues and I have Gates in every single one with no backup. Any ideas for a sneaky waiver TE? McHugh was actually my first thought also.
 
This would be beyond painful. I've kept Scheffler on my bench all year for just this scenario but because he played on Thursday I didn't use him.

Right now I'm thinking Zack Miller could be my best bet (yeah, just what I want in a semi-final matchup) as I would be praying to the fantasy Gods that he gets garbage points in a Colt blowout. The other reason is he plays at 4:00 so I can hold out to the last possible second about Gates.

Yeah, I was thinking of picking him up, but he plays at 1 and I think I'd rather start a questionable Gates for Billy Miller if the decision on Gates comes after the 1PM games start.I'm looking at Zach Miller (OAK) vs. IND @ 4:05 to pick up as a last minute change if Gates is OUT.
 
What about Brandon Manumaleuna? Is there any precedent here with Gates being out? Will the offense change or will the TE still be heavily integrated, even with Gates out?

 
i'll be screwed here.. have gates in 2 leagues.. and my waiver wire closed week 13. in one league i had leonard pope.. gone.. the other.. scheffler.. already played.

don't hose me antonio!

 
Screwed by Thursday night. Happens every year. Oh well. At least I don't have to worry about Gates giving me negative points.

Why not roster Brandon Manumaleuna? He is Gates' backup, and faces a Det D that gave up a bazillion points to Jason Witten last week. If Gates is inactive, you slide him right in. He is obviously no Gates or Witten, but is Billy Miller?

I gone for church stuff all day (in a couple min) I think I am going to pull gates for billy Miller also. Guy I am going against started Vernon davis (went off yesterday) so this is kind of depressing. McHugh is a tempting option also.

I'm going with Zach Miller as well, if Gates is out. Raiders play at 4pm, should have to throw all day and the weather won't be a factor.

I'm going with Zach Miller as well, if Gates is out. Raiders play at 4pm, should have to throw all day and the weather won't be a factor.

Don't forget, guys, that if SD wins today (a 99.9% certainty), Gates will likely sit out next week, too. So, whoever you grab today to substitute for him, try to ensure he has some value next week, too. :unsure:

Can this be true? You would think it would be one or the other but the question is which one with Orton at the helm..Olsen got a couple more targets last week, and has been more heavily targetted in the redzone (11 to 7) this year, not sure who plays more snaps.

marcedes lewis & desmond clark are interesting options. clark has a mnf game so you cna make move later. lewis is a 1pm start in bad weather but a te with winds could get some targets.

FWIW. Both were available and I grabbed Olsen to start in a semifinal playoff game. Back to the Gates prayer circle

 
fortunately, also have Tony G. Grab a helmet, Tony! Can't risk a bagel at the TE spot. That's good news for everyone else as Gates is sure to go off.

 
If he starts, what are the odds he plays a full game? Some teams will dress a guy to try him out, others have a philosophy of "if you can't play the whole game, you don't dress". Anyone know where the Chargers comes down on that one?

Understand and appreciate the slant you want for these threads, but FWIW I, for one, find value in the corrollary discussion about what people see as viable options if "player x" can't go -- in terms of the alternatives' opportunity and in terms of aligning game times.

True, there is value in that discussion, but a separate thread can be created for that. I for one don't want to read through 2 pages of "I have to start Mercedes Lewis and it's my championship game!! :thumbup: " just to get to some real news about him.
