Well A-10 being a bit proactive, George Mason is joining the league. Solid move and GMU should be a good program with Hewitt. That bumps them back up to 13 and gives them probably the best team they could hope to get that fits their conference.

Imagine the book isn't closed on SLU, Dayton or even VCU so I imagine we'll be seeing some fans coming and going in the A-10 thread going forward.

Yeah, I wonder if they're going to raid the CAA for James Madison or College of Charleston. I think VCU will stay now since they have regional teams to play like Richmond, George Mason and GW. If they added those other two schools, they could do a legit North/South division alignment.Glad SLU is staying (for now) but with Xavier and Butler leaving, I don't know if the travel makes sense for them for other sports. Closest schools would be Dayton and then Duquesne.

SLU should be in the next wave of Big East schools. Travel will be a factor.

I'm really curious what the next step will be, since 13 doesn't seem to be a workable number. Is the A-10 banking on Saint Louis/Dayton sticking around? Do they go after a Davidson or Wichita State?

One darkhorse possibility is that the MAC turns up the heat on UMass to join for all sports, or UMass ends up with a seat at the table of whatever is left of the old Big East mess. Have to wonder where the future lies for the only A-10 school left with an FBS football program.

Davidson joining the A10 next year.

New Teams: George Mason, Davidson

Teams Firmly Entrenched: Duquesne, Fordham, GWU, La Salle, URI, St. Bonnies, SJU

Teams Who Could Move: Richmond, UMass, St. Louis, Dayton, and VCU

So that puts the A10 at 14 going forward with the ability to drop to 12 assuming 2 teams leave. I'm not really sure what UMass' deal is so I can't really tell what they are thinking. Richmond seems less likely to move. Most likely candidates are St. Louis and Dayton to the Catholic League. VCU is probably the prize of the conference but they don't really fit the new Big East.

But the good news is the A10 seems relatively stable in that they should survive losing another 2-4 teams and they should have possible replacements as well.

I think UMass' preferred options would go like this:

1. Invite to the new AAC ... provided the likes of UConn, Temple and Cincinnati all remain

2. Continue with the MAC arrangement for football and stay in the A-10 for all other sports

3. Go MAC all sports.

I don't think Option 3 would really come into play unless the MAC forced their hand and UMass had no other FBS options -- in most sports (esp. basketball) the MAC would be a step down and a bigger travel burden on other Olympic sports. Option 2 seems most likely at this point, although as long as FBS football stirs the drink, Option 1 has to remain in play -- assuming an invite even comes.

Davidson is a good add. Basically replaces Charlotte.

I think the biggest risk with UMass is the AAC. But they may give them a couple of years in FBS before offering an invite though.

As a Davidson alum, I am very happy. SoCon is lifeless and getting worse. Despite more potential defections, the A-10 at least has a pulse and will seemingly try to stay relevant.

Yeah, fits for all involved. I think with recent defections, the A10 goes back to being a true mid-major conference but nothing wrong with that (see Wichita State or VCU). I think St. Louis and Dayton leave. That will sting a bit but they'll be at 12 and be more of an East coast conference. They can raid the rest of the Colonial for a Northeastern, Drexel, Delaware or similar. Not sure if any other conferences have teams that fit the bill. Big question will be if VCU leaves, but even if they do, I see a MVC or WCC type averaging about 2 bids a year.

Thought I'd bump this with the conference season about a week away. Even with the defections, A10 is still looking strong (they'd probably get 4 bids right now). I'm pretty excited for GW. If they keep it up, we could make our first tournament appearance since 2007.

My pre-conference top 5:

1) UMass

2) GW

3) St. Louis

4) VCU

5) Dayton

SLU got a nice 8 point win on the road yesterday at Vandy.
And they really did not play their best basketball. Good win for them.

Glad to see UofR finally figure out how to shoot. They were making only 28.2% lof their 3s (332nd out of 351 Division 1 teams) which is not good for anyone, especially a perimeter based team. They have shooters and the potential to get better as well.

Still on Cloud Nine after GW's win against VCU last night. One of the loudest crowds I've seen at the Smith Center in years. It's nice to be relevant again.

Outstanding year for the A-10!!! Sorry Coach K, but for this year they deserved every bid. 2-0 against the ACC in the Tournament after the dust up with K did not hurt at all. Then to parlay giving up the Barclays Center into three years of double-headers there on ESPN against the ACC? GREAT move! Add in a guarantee for one team in the Brooklyn Hoops Event and this is awesome exposure. Hard to argue w/ how they are running things.

Oh, and Go Flyers!

I haven't seen details of the Barclays-ACC/A-10 arrangement. How many games each season and how many teams guaranteed to be involved?

Double headers at the Barclays Center in 2015, 2016, 2017 -- Yes, I know there is no guarantee which teams the ACC will make available, I doubt they want to get swept on national TV, especially after going 0-2 against them in the Tourney this year. Cannot hurt the Conferences reputation or appeal.

Heck, even if the ACC were trying to tank this (and why would they want to tank in the new home of their Conference tourney?) it would mean what? VT, Wake, Clemson. . . every other team offers some recruiting/interest angle for the A-10. And the ACC is not about tanking. We will see some good games.

Interested to see where the A-10 tourney ends up in 2017 and '18. Some of the more recent sites should not work (A.C. because Boardwalk Hall is a dump that should be torn down, and Cincy because Xavier is gone).

Philly or D.C. seem like decent bets. Philly has hosted a lot historically (I remember going to the tournament at the Spectrum back in the day). I'd like to see D.C. in recognition of some of the recent adds, but I may be biased by the convenience of that.

Glad to see my alma mater representing well thus far in its inaugural season.

Can't believe I just paid $35 a seat for the last row when they come to play at the Joe. Not the SoCon anymore (though LaSalle's tix are more reasonable at $15-$20)

Richmond-VCU one of the best games of the year last night.

4 way tie at the top of the standings. Should be a fun finish and tourney.

Davidson-URI was a hell of a game, too.

Nice group of games to finish and settle the exact order of the tourney seeding, but I'd say that the top 4 are just about locked in to those double-byes right now.

Great day of ball.

Three huge games this week for tournament seeding:

URI-Dayton on Tuesday

UMass-Richmond on Wednesday

Davidson-VCU on Thursday

This has been outstanding week of basketball in the A-10. Maybe the VCU drop hurts the impression of those who do not follow the Conference, but for fans of the game they have had a thrill ride going on. Can't wait for the tourney.

Yeah, it has been a great end to the season. Even with my GW fading, it has been a fun season.

Looking forward to the final week, and then the tourney. It is pretty wide open this year.

The Dayton game is huge for Rhode Island, they have to win that one and then beat St Joe's to have a shot at getting a tourney bid. They would probably also need to make the A10 Tourney final as well. A scenario could play out that Rhody wins the A10 regular season yet they don't go to the tourney but three other teams from the conference do make it.

Pretty excited for the future of the program though provided Hurley stays on. Right now they have two Sophomores and two Freshman as significant contributors. Next year, Allen Iverson's nephew is eligible to play, 6'9" and very talented. Of course, he was booted from Memphis this year.

Yeah, the way it looks now, URI is needs to finish strong and/or get some help from some bubble teams in other conferences. UMass in basically the same boat.

It would be kind of crazy if URI got the regular season title and still didn't get in by losing their first game in the A-10 tourney, but it does look possible.

If Davidson wins Thursday, I really think that they are planting their flag in the field of 68. But it could still be knocked over by a stiff wind if they blow it against Duquesne or in the A-10 tourney.

It is conceivable that the only team to make the field will be the one that finished 5th in the Conference?!?!?! Hmm, perhaps preseason rankings carry too much weight? Looking forward to a good tournamnet. UofR has won 6 in a row and 7 of the last 8. They could be a spoiler with that 4th seed.
