Official Baltimore Orioles Thread! (1 Viewer)

Out of curiousity, what is the Orioles payroll this year? Is it anywhere close to the Yankees 200 million or the Red Sox 120 million?
IIRC it's not too bad. Tejada and Lopez have big deals, but otherwise it's not bloated. Sosa didn't get a long term deal (1 year with an option) and most of the pitchers are relatively young and so don't have big numbers. Ponsoon is a major exception to that, of course.

Are there any Orioles fans posting in here or is just Red Sox, Yankees and the 1 known Devil Rays fan in here? Are there any Orioles fans left?

Without a 'stubborn MLB basher' option, I feel left out.

I'm still here....not a ton to say right now- we suck. Raffy is a disgrace, but then again so are about half of MLB ballplayers. The entire sport is so corrupt its ridiculous. As for the O's...I still have to be happy with this season. A 2 month reign as one of the best teams in baseball has to help build for the future somewhat, although obviously this past month has hurt our franchise's future a ton.

Why?
A few reasons....The major one being that Towers was just "on" tonight. I know why you ask though- the O's had won 3 in a row and you would think they'd have momentum, but thats the thing about baseball- one good pitcher can slow down even the largest amount of momentum.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Manager Sam Perlozzo might just quit warning Eric DuBose when he's going to pitch every time out.

``Works for me,'' DuBose said with a grin.

DuBose didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning of his emergency start, and the Baltimore Orioles sent Oakland to its fourth straight loss with a 5-3 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday -- the club's first three-game sweep at the Coliseum in nearly 12 years.

The Orioles have won nine of their last 12 games and suddenly consider themselves a playoff contender again. There were loud cheers in the clubhouse postgame and plenty of jokes to go around.

``These guys believe in themselves right now,'' Perlozzo said. ``It feels great. ... They're sky high.''

DuBose took the mound at the last minute after Daniel Cabrera was scratched because of a sore lower back, then pitched brilliantly on only 20 minutes' notice. Mark Ellis broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single to center with two outs in the fifth.

``I think that did work to an advantage today,'' DuBose said. ``I didn't have a chance to think about the start.''

The 29-year-old DuBose (1-0), making his second appearance of the season after being recalled from Double-A Bowie on Aug. 9, retired 14 of the first 16 batters. He allowed only Ellis' hit in six shutout innings, struck out two and walked four.

``We've toyed with the idea if he does get the start not telling him,'' Perlozzo said.

DuBose was 8-10 with a 3.25 ERA at Bowie and has made all of 37 major league appearances in parts of four seasons, yet this outing certainly helps his cause.

Luis Matos homered and had three hits for Baltimore. He connected for a solo shot to left-center on a 3-2 pitch from Justin Duchscherer leading off the seventh, helping the Orioles to their first three-game road sweep since April 22-24 at Toronto. They won the first two games here in crazy fashion, and the finale didn't lack intrigue, either.

In the sixth, Orioles right fielder David Newhan sprinted into foul territory in front of his team's bullpen trying to make a play on a high popup by Eric Chavez. But bullpen coach Elrod Hendricks jumped out of his seat and Newhan collided with the coach and had no chance at the catch -- though it might have kept him from running into the low bullpen roof.

``I was trying to get out of the way, but I'm glad he ran into me,'' Hendricks said. ``He could have easily gotten hurt.''

The A's shuffled their lineup to face a left-hander instead of a righty, but had little success against DuBose. Oakland's four-game skid is the club's worst since its second eight-game losing streak of the season May 21-29.

``We're in a funk. We're going to try to lick our wounds and take a day of rest, then play a tough Kansas City team,'' Chavez said sarcastically about the Royals, who lost their club-record 18th straight game Wednesday.

Jay Payton hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the A's against Jason Grimsley and Mark Kotsay added an RBI groundout.

Todd Williams worked the ninth for his first career save.

Dan Haren (10-9) was tagged for four straight hits to start the second and fell behind 2-0, losing his second straight start following a career-best nine-game winning streak. After Matos singled in the inning, Haren retired eight straight batters before running into more trouble in the fifth.

``It's pretty tough to keep up like we have done the last two months,'' Haren said. ``We haven't been playing good, so we're not taking any team lightly.''

Rafael Palmeiro was scratched from the Orioles' lineup because of a sprained right ankle, a day after he had two hits in his second appearance since coming back from a 10-day steroid suspension.

Palmeiro injured the ankle on his sixth-inning infield single Tuesday night and left the stadium before Wednesday's game to have an X-ray, which was negative. He expects to play first base Friday at Cleveland.

``That's what I get for not playing two weeks, I guess,'' he said. ``I was ready to come back out today. I don't think it's anything serious.''

Baltimore's Eric Byrnes finished 0-for-13 in his first series against his former team, which traded the popular outfielder last month. He is 1-for-24 with one RBI in his last seven games.

Notes

Cabrera said his back is ``really bad'' and it began bothering him 5 minutes into his pregame warmup. He will be re-evaluated Thursday. ... The A's have scored two total runs in the first five innings over their last nine games. ... Home-plate umpire Chris Guccione was booed loudly when announced before the game. As the first-base umpire Monday night, he made a controversial ruling when he signaled first baseman Dan Johnson was off the bag on Melvin Mora's grounder and it cost the A's the go-ahead run. ... Duchscherer allowed his first homer since July 16 against Texas.

I can accept all the Palmiero crap an O's fan, but would like to see Ponson Sosa and Kline go bye bye ASAP. It's a bad scene man.

I am a dog and I am unable to read newspapers. Can someone please tell me if the Orioles are still in first place? TIA.
Ummm...should we have someone call you? Because, I'm guessing you inability to read is not limited solely to newspapers.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kris Benson and Kevin Millar, coming off stints with the Yankees' biggest rivals, boosted Baltimore to a win in their first New York appearances with the Orioles.

Benson pitched just well enough to escape trouble and Millar hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the sixth inning in Baltimore's 6-5 victory Friday night.

Dealt by the Mets to Baltimore during the offseason, perhaps because of attention-grabbing wife Anna, Benson (2-2) never retired the side in order. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings, and rookie reliever Sandy Rleal got out of a two-on jam he inherited in the sixth.

Chris Ray loaded the bases in the ninth before getting his sixth save in six chances.

Ray walked Derek Jeter with one out and Gary Sheffield singled. Alex Rodriguez then struck out, drawing loud boos. After the runners moved up on defensive indifference, Jason Giambi loaded the bases with a walk. But Hideki Matsui took a 3-2 pitch for strike three to end it.

Millar spent the previous three seasons with Boston, helping the Red Sox beat the Yankees in 2004 en route to their first World Series title since 1918. He was booed loudly each time he came to the plate, and got a pair of big hits for the Orioles.

After doubling and scoring to spark a three-run third against Chien-Ming Wang (1-1), Millar got the key hit of the game.

With the Orioles trailing 4-3, Baltimore loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on consecutive singles by Miguel Tejada, Jay Gibbons and Ramon Hernandez.

Javy Lopez hit a comebacker that Wang turned into a forceout at the plate -- with a low throw that Jorge Posada scooped -- and Millar blooped an 0-1 pitch into right field.

Wang gave up six runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. Baltimore made it 6-4 when Scott Proctor walked rookie Nick Markakis with the bases loaded.

Matsui and Posada singled with two outs in the sixth, and Rleal relieved. Robinson Cano fouled out on his first pitch, pinch-hitter Bernie Williams walked to load the bases and Rleal retired Johnny Damon on a groundout.

Consecutive doubles by Matsui and Posada off LaTroy Hawkins pulled the Yankees within a run in the eighth.

Even before the first pitch, it was a night for compelling story lines.

Baltimore was playing its first game against the Yankees since its former manager, Lee Mazzilli, returned to New York as a bench coach.

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts returned to Yankee Stadium for the first time since he dislocated his left elbow last Sept. 20 in a nasty collision at first base with Bubba Crosby. In addition to Benson, it marked a return to New York for Orioles vice president Jim Duquette, the Mets' former general manager.

Sheffield's single following Jeter's triple high off the right-center fence put the Yankees ahead in the first, but Baltimore took a 3-1 lead in the third. Melvin Mora had a two-run infield single to shortstop as Jeter rushed a high throw to first, and Tejada followed with an RBI single.

Cano's two-run homer a few feet to the left of the right-field pole tied the score in the fourth, and Rodriguez hit an RBI single for a 4-3 lead in the fifth.

Notes

Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard returned after missing opening day for the first time since 1950. Sheppard injured a hip the night before the opener. ... A moment of silence was observed before the game in memory of Gulf Coast Yankees manager Oscar Acosta and Humberto Trejo, field coordinator the Dominican Summer League Yankees. They were killed in a car crash Wednesday.

I'm thinking the O's need a new thread for a new season. Lineup seems to be better then last year, especially without Sammy "Winstrol" Sosa and Raphy "D-Bol" Palmeiro. Pitching is a year older with a new established pitching coach. Defense is improved, Hernandez has been lights out behind the plate. I was concerned about losing BJ Ryan, but Chris Ray is looking more then capable. I know it's early, but the O's are looking pretty good.
