Fair enough. At this point, I would say that his legacy will be one we will paying off well past our lifetimes.

I like the analogy, but I think it's wrong. But who can tell right now. I know there will be a good many people who benefit from it though. Remains to be seen how far the downside goes though...as there's almost always a downside to these things. But does the good outweigh the bad? We'll see.But the ambition of this administration in putting forward a lot of "reform" legislation and getting it passed, well, it's not very common to see such successes. And if he gets an energy bill and immigration bill through before he leaves, well, that's mighty impressive, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with him.(I think his chances are seriously hampered after the elections in a few months...but we'll see what happens. An influx of Republican leadership ...oxymoron?...will test his leadership skills even further).

He's proven he dosen't need 60 Senate votes to push through legislation he wants. While impressive, I just wish he hadn't done it in a back-alley kind of way (cloture?). Heck, Bush got bipartisan support on such far reaching things as the Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind and was able to get those implemented with up/down votes.I also wish Obama would be open to more ideas other than his own.

Did you read what I posted up there? They put a few things that the Republicans wanted in the house bill, but almost all of those were stripped out.If Obama had agreed to allow the sale of insurance across state lines, he would have gotten at least 20 Republican votes in my opinion. That was a HUGE position the Republicans were taking. They also wouldn't shut up about tort reform, but I don't think that was as important to them.

I don't think any amount of spending would've kept the RE market out of the crapper. The circumstances leading up to the bubble bursting lead to an inevitable downturn in the market, but how sharply it was going to crash was the only thing that could be affected. I think the administrations efforts on that front were pretty good, doing what reasonable things they could to soften the blow with tax credits and other incentives.

It's going to the same place. He just extended the timeline at a huge price. Anyone with any sense would have seen this. The solution to the real estate problem is job creation. I thought that would be his prime focus. With all of the stimulus programs, the underemployment shouldn't be this high.

Ah, the key word is "combat". All of the combat brigades were out August last year like I said; that was about 90K troops in 18 months. The remaining troops aren't so-called combat troops and they're supposed to be out by the end of this year as scheduled.

Obama's been incredibly disappointing re: civil liberties. There's no denying this. But I can't imagine GOP Candidate X would be better in any fashion.

Only if one bought into the :hophead: and promises that didn't mathematically add up. However, it will be short lived if Romney gets into office. It appears that he's promising even more than Obama and is even more mathematically impossible.

I've always thought you were a nice guy, Tim. Our political views are on opposite ends of the spectrum but that's no big deal to me. I just can't understand your apparent support of almost everything Obama does, though. It's like he can do no wrong in your eyes. This is a serious question. Is there anything you disapprove of that Obama has done? I'm interested in hearing a viewpoint on Obama from somebody on your side. I don't spend much time in political threads here. I know there are just as many people who think Obama can do no right either.

Your question cracks me up, because I'm not even especially a fan of Obama. I didn't vote for him either time. I disapprove of his economic philosophy. To soecifically answer your question, I don't like Obamacare. I still don't see how it can work in the long run without adding greatly to the deficit. I made my position clear in that in this forum in the initial debate, and my view hasn't changed. But- my overall view of Obama HAS changed. Up until a few weeks ago, I thought he was a mediocre President: neither terrible not very good. But his accomplishments in the last 6 months have been extraordinary for a lame duck: the executive order on illegals, the climate change agreement with China, the opening up of Cuba, the TPP, and the Iran deal. Personally I am in favor of all of these actions, so naturally my opinion of Obama has risen sharply. But even if I was opposed to all of it, I would still have to acknowledge that Obama has a lot to be smug about these days, which was the point of my previous post.

I don't know who "we" is but a more apt analogy is that it was GWB's watch upon which the fire started, and who put it out (via TARP). Obama is the contractor you hire to rebuild the house and he takes 4 times longer and is 2 times more expensive than other contractors.

First black president had so many opportunities to bridge the divide unify the country like he talked about in so many of his campaign speeches. Instead, he's widened the divide within the American people and within the political parties more than anyone in my lifetime. Protests in major cities around the country. Cops getting murdered in cold blood. Great leader there.
