Obama offers best way out of economic disarray

In 49 years of living in Charlotte, I've seldom offered my opinion in writing and never submitted a piece such as this. The condition of our country compels me.

The economic disarray threatening our community and nation poses critical challenges but also presents opportunity. We can observe the presidential candidates in the crucible of crisis.

Only one of them demonstrates the needed intellect, fortitude and temperament. That is why I have decided to publicly support Barack Obama.

What is needed in Washington is sound judgment and exceptional leadership. Through the years that I've been a businessman and before that an officer in the Marine Corps, I saw what qualities make effective leaders. I see them in Obama: a sharp intellect, stiff spine and steady hand.

Obama's economic plans will restore market confidence and provide a blueprint for a better future. His pragmatic, intelligent economic plan will stop our financial slide and restore the expansion and confidence we knew in the 1990s. Obama's tax relief plans for small businesses and the middle class should provide much-needed economic stimulus.

Obama also has an energy plan that makes sense. He will shift energy use from foreign oil toward alternative, domestic sources. This will create millions of “green collar” jobs and enable us to capitalize on alternative energy. These cleaner energy solutions will protect the planet for our children and grandchildren and free us from depending on hostile nations.

We could not have built Bank of America into the leader it has become without a highly educated workforce. Obama proposes to invest in education to ensure we remain the most productive and efficient in the world. We must take these steps to stay globally competitive.

I greatly respect all that John McCain has done for our nation. But it is Barack Obama whom we need now.

It appears that sometime in the last week a lot of North Carolina Democrats who were undecided about Barack Obama decided he was their man.

For the first time in a PPP poll of North Carolina Obama is earning over 80% of the vote from self identified Democrats, and that's fueling a four point increase in his lead in the state compared to last week. He now has an 82-15 lead with voters in his own party. His share of the Democratic vote had been anywhere between 69 and 76% in PPP's previous five surveys of the state.

Republicans have won the Presidential race in North Carolina for decades by capturing anywhere from a fifth to a third of the Democratic vote. If John McCain does not continue that trend he will have a very difficult time winning the Tar Heel state, particularly since Obama is also up 46-40 with independents.

Obama is winning in every region of the state except the Triad, has upped his share of the white vote to 38%, and has a 60-34 lead among voters most concerned with the economy.

The hope was that one or maybe both could go for the DNC candidate in 2008 presidential election. So I don't think anyone really hoped for this level of success this quickly....

I'm not sure whether Obama is playing off of Dean's 50 state strategy play book, or not, but either way it seems to me that a combination of Dean's plowing money into red counties in 2004 and 2005, W's 2005 disaster of a year, the GOP's disaster of a decade, and Obama's campaigning for every vote is going to result in the democrats having a new foothold in many, many places around this country where just four years ago they conceded defeat without even trying.

I'm not looking for big picture things, like how we're viewed as a nation or any of that crap.

Simply 5 things that will make the day to day lives of Americans better 4 years from today than they are now.

I'm being serious here. I won't respond to any of the bullet points. I just want to feel a little better about President Obama than I do now.

One, and this isn't a reason I'm voting for him, but I love the idea that a black man, even half black, could be elected to a country with such a bad history of slavery. It's really a sign of the progress we've made as a country, an affirmation that we're moving in the right direction, and it could be an inspiring thing for many black americans who still are suffering from the remnants of slavery and Jim Crow laws.

1) More Americans will have affordable health insurance2) Our troops won't be involved in Middle East wars.3) America will be undergoing a strategic policy in alternative forms of energy so that we aren't sending our dollars to Middle Eastern (or Venezuelan) fanatics.4) Our federal agencies will be led by people with the education and experience to do the job properly (which is probably the thing I'm looking forward to most).5) When the NBA Champions visit the White House, our President will ask them for a pickup game on the newly installed outdoor court next to the rose garden.

1) His approach to education is miles ahead of anyone we've had a chance to vote for in quite some time. One of the biggest problems in day to day life for the U.S. is our downward spiral in terms of educational accomplishment. He's going to get minimize, if not get rid of, standards based testing which is an absolute failure in terms of establishing educational achievement. He's going to make sure that resources go to teachers and students rather than getting wrapped up in middle management. An educated workforce and general populace is key to our economic and political well being.2) I like his approach to encouraging job creation and retention in this country through the use of tax incentives for job creators and closing of loopholes for those who ship too many jobs over seas. This must be done to keep wealth generation happening in the U.S. and to realize some of the currently unaccounted for cost of shipping jobs overseas in terms of worker conditions and environmental costs that we all end up bearing.3) He will end the Iraq military action soon, eliminating the outrageous cost of an action who achieved its only clearly defined success criteria years ago.4) His approach to energy independence is much more realistic and effective. The goal has to be ending oil dependence period - not just foreign oil, but all oil. Oil is a dead end and finding new places to drill is a side track that delays the necessary and inevitable switch to renewable energy sources - including nuclear.5) He IS directing tax breaks to exactly the people who need them, the middle and lower class. We've tried the trickle down thing and it just doesn't work. The middle class down are the ones who form the foundations of our economy, Obama reduces their (our) tax burden to a greater extent than McCain - especially when one considers McCain's awful approach to health care.

Why does this format favor mccain? He does these townhalls a lot, but it's just a forum for him to give his stump speeches on a variety of topics like any other. I've been to one of these this year already. Nothing came out that hadn't come out in print from his stump speeches at any point to date. Only the current event questions could be interpreted as new, but those always get spun back to old material. This is my least favorite debate of the season. The "fakeness" of the event just wears on me after awhile. Having "real" people there does nothing to change the message. Will he actually look at BO tonight? How many times will he use naive?What's the drinking game du jour?

Here are mine:1. A Black man will be President. Will that end all racism in this country? The answer is no. Leon Blum became the first Jewish Prime Minister of France in 1936, but this only led to greater anti-Semitism, not less. Still, it will be a triumph as to how far this country has come from Jim Crow. 2. Obama may make us popular around the world again. He seems to be revered like no political figure since John Kennedy. I say "may" because a lot depends on how much Obama carries out his protectionist promises to the unions. I suspect he won't, because his economic advisors will tell him how important free trade is.3. We will get out of the disastrous Iraq war. I shudder to think what's going to happen over there, but we can't improve it anymore anyhow. Better to save the 10 billion a month.4. Since I share Barack Obama's views on abortion and other social issues, I will most likely approve of his selection of Supreme Court Justices, who will do more to preserve individual liberty than Bush's choices has.5. If Obama is elected, there is no chance that Sarah Palin will be our president.
