**Official Bengals Offseason thread 09** (1 Viewer)

if we go P last there won't be one worth taking there. Huber's the only guy that jumps out as draft-worthy.Btw, I predict either:1) we take him at 5.06or2) he's gone when it rolls around at 6.06just a feeling-QG
Good call.
Sorry, why not take James Casey in the beginning of the 5th? Would have been awesome value. Punters are a dime a dozen....i would have taken the chance at foregoing the Punter pick, in exchange for a playmaker like Casey.

Well ML said he's high on Cook and Santucci so if worse comes to worse we can just go with them but I think one of Caldwell, Luigs or Shipley will be fine. Finding a 10 sack pass rusher later in the draft will be alot harder, no pass rush at all last season and Geathers is coming off micro fracture surgery.
They sure took care of business today. Best draft in recent memory.

Wow. This is a first. Hasn't been a single pick that has made me mad. Would have liked to see Center a little earlier, but Luigs will be fine. Easily the best draft I can recall. Special thanks to whoever locked up Mikey for the weekend.

Bernard Scott in the 6th huh? Dont know much of him really. But I am surprised this wasnt Rashad Jennings... He is still there right?

the nfl.com guys say that Scott has had a lot of troubles. Sounds like the perfect Bungal

Don't you mean Jaguar?

Many red flags, including his age (25), being kicked off two teams (one in high school, one in college) and several run-ins with police.
:lmao:

Scott had monster numbers at Abilene Christian, he could wind up as your starter if he stays out of trouble.

Of course having Chris Henry hanging around probably won't help.

Scott has had alot of legal troubles. Been on 4 different college teams. But this guy is a BEAST make no mistake about it. I was watching day 2 of the draft specifically to see where he went. It is crazy that the Bengals of all teams took him. But he is the real deal IF he can stay out of trouble.

He puts up HUGE, ENORMOUS, OUT OF THIS WORLD numbers everywhere he goes. Granted none of those places were D1 but still. Keep your eye on this guy come training camp and pre season.

Bernard Scott Interview

Q: The drawback to you may be your off-field incidents. How do you feel those weighed down your draft stock?

BS: I cleared up the issues of my past. All of the mistakes I have made, I have learned from them. I have become a better person. I am ready to put all of that behind me and move forward and come to Cincinnati.

Q: Did the Bengals bring up any of your past issues in their interviews with you?

BS: They asked me about it. They wanted to understand and talk to me about what really happened. Once we got that out of the way, we talked about sports.

Q: Did you find that to be the case with most of the other teams you talked to before the draft?

BS: Yes, that was the case. I am not ashamed to talk about what I did. I made those mistakes and I have to answer those questions and go forward from there.

Q: Can you explain the incidents?

BS: One was fleeing when a cop pulled me over in my car. Instead of pulling over, I drove home and then stopped. I was accused of stealing an iPod, which was dropped. I had a false identification charge when I showed my brother’s identification.

Q: Did you ever strike a coach?

BS: That’s a rumor, but it’s not true. I got into it with one of my teammates at practice. A big fight broke out. Somebody grabbed me from behind and I reacted by pushing that person away. I didn’t hit anyone and I didn’t strike anyone at all.

Q: How have you grown from the mistakes of your past?

BS: Instead of reacting, now I know I have to think. I need to stay out of bad places and not let things get to me. I feel like now I can sense when something bad is going on, and I stay away from those places.

You know the Bengals owned this draft when all the haters come out of the woodwork throwing the "character card" around. None of these guys have done anything as bad as Santonio Holmes or Donte Stallworth. This is the NFL, not a cub scout jamboree. You can pretty much dig up anything on anybody in this draft.

Bengals Bounce Chris Perry

Posted by Mike Florio on April 27, 2009, 2:52 p.m.

Five years after making him a first-round pick in the draft, the Cincinnati Bengals have decided to give up on running back Chris Perry.

The team announced on Monday the decision to part ways with Perry.

When drafted, Perry was expected to be the short-term complement and long-term replacement for Rudi Johnson. Though Perry outlasted Johnson, Perry never provided the Bengals with much of a return on their investment.

He departs with one year left on his contract, at a base salary of $1.008 million. He instantly becomes a free agent.

Perry leaves with 606 career rushing yards. In five years.

The Bengals also cut safety Mike Doss and tight end Nate Lawrie, and waived defensive end/linebacker Eric Henderson and running back Gary Russell.

Russell recently was cut by the Steelers, and claimed off waivers by the Bengals.

Wow. I didn't expect Russell to be ousted so quickly. I can see why the others were released though.

Shame that Perry had so many injuries. I think he could have been our guy still had he not been so unfortunate.

Hrm, interesting that they got rid of Russell so fast, but then again I guess you're covering your bases before the draft in case things don't go how you expect. Interesting that Plackenmeier is not yet gone.-QG

Bengals Will Trade Or Cut Levi Jones

Posted by Mike Florio on April 27, 2009, 3:28 p.m.

With left tackle Andre Smith secured via the sixth overall pick in the draft, the Cincinnati Bengals now plan to drop a first-round pick from seven years ago.

According to James Walker of ESPN.com, the Bengals have informed Levi Jones that they plan to trade or cut him.

Per Walker, the Bengals kept Jones in the event that they didn’t emerge from the draft with a replacement.

“Nothing has happened so far, but we expect something to happen very shortly,” agent Kenny Zuckerman of Priority Sports told Walker. “The Bengals told me it was highly likely that he would be traded or released.”

Per NFLPA records, Jones is under contract for four more years, at base salaries of $3 million in 2009, $3.75 million in 2010, $4.55 million in 2011, and $5 million in 2012.

Coincidentally, Smith hired last week agent Rick Smith. Of Priority Sports. And so as one client of the firm becomes the new left tackle of the Bengals, another client of the firm is losing that same gig.

Not so fast...From Bengals.com:JONES NOT CUT: Kenny Zuckerman, the agent for left tackle Levi Jones, said Monday the club told him last month that they would trade him or cut him before the draft. But Zuckerman admitted Monday he's getting conflicitng reports from the team after head coach Marvin Lewis appeared on NFL Network during the draft and made it sound like Jones is sticking around. Given Jones' salary for '09 is in excess of $3 million and they drafted a guy with the sixth pick in Andre Smith that is going to start at left tackle or right tackle, the question could be if the Bengals want to see how Smith responds in workouts before they do anything. -QG

This was a good thread to bump, Norris - I forgot how much of our draft projections came through :)

It would be a good time to review the draft so far and how the players have fared. It's pretty interesting to note that the impact of this draft really has yet to be fully felt - a good sign actually, it means we've got some real depth now IMO.

On to the picks:

1.06 Andre Smith. The saga of man-boobs is well known, his workout regimen in hard knocks being the stuff of legend (or at least good fodder for the rookie show at Bengals training camp). Hasn't dressed for a game yet and the line play has been so awesome that it hasn't been noticed at all. How he fits in will be an interesting part of the story for the 2nd half of this year. If he's the player he was in college our line will fully turnover from a major weakness to a real strength in the space of one year.

2.06 Rey Maualuga. Has tailed off the last couple of games, but he took the starting job in camp and has been a great contributor on special teams as well. 30 tackles and 1 sack. Has been a definite difference maker and can only imagine where he'll go from here.

3.06 Michael Johnson. Still a backup but he's starting to come around a bit (got half-a-sack last game) and his true impact has yet to be felt.

3.34 Chase Coffman. Hasn't dressed yet which is a bit worrisome. Hopefully he'll find his way into the lineup sometime soon (not quite sure if he'd be the best guy to take Henry's spot on the active roster as basically a receiver). Have to think he, and not JP Foschi, is the future at the position.

4.06 Jonathan Luigs. Kyle Cook's emergence has made it unnecessary for Luigs to be more than usually a special-teamer so far this year.

5.06 Kevin Huber. If you've looked at other predictions I've made around the boards this may prove to be my first and last called shot. He's been a massive massive improvement at the position and by-and-large has come as advertised IMO. 17th in punting average, but where were we last year? 14th in punts inside the 20. 23rd in net punting average - could be better, but frankly he's been punting a lot from better field position usually which probably has had some impact. Bottom line - I'm not worried when he comes on the field, which is a definite change from last year. Legend in the making. Future Hall of Famer.

6.06 Morgan Trent. He's played ever game and has provided good depth to this point.

6.36 Bernard Scott. Benson has basically eaten his opportunity to this point. 16 carries for 62 yards makes a decent average.

7.06 Fui Vakapuna. Got him back off the Arizona practice squad. Hasn't dressed yet.

7.40 Clinton McDonald. Practice squad.

7.43 Freddie Brown. Cut.

So, in sum, the jury is still out on this rookie class, but really outside of Maualuga and Huber there hasn't been a lot of impact so far. Certainly not as much as we have figured to this point.
