I thought I remembered it being a normal, puke-ey color.

Anyway, Michael Pitt went to West Orange high school in NJ where a buddy of mine is a guidance counselor (not when Pitt was there). All the teachers who WERE there at the time said that when Pitt was in school, he basically wandered around high as a kite on multiple drugs all day long, never did work, never really talked to anyone, and was basically a huge loser. Now he's the new DiCaprio.

Lesson to the kids out there...don't sweat high school.
Do you think you might be getting a tiny bit carried away there?
Yes I do. It wasn't really meant to be taken literally. I don't think he's going to be the biggest celebrity superstar actor in the world, if that's what you mean. But he has a similar look and attitude about him, and is arguably the biggest star on TV's biggest hit right now. So it's safe to say he's an up-and-coming kid.
I liked him better on Dawson's Creek

I think the comment reflects more that they kind of resemble each other and Scorsese seems to like that look and has spoken highly of Pitt. And I will say, I haven't really seen/remember Pitt from other stuff, but I think he's pretty good in this. I guess IMGs aren't allowed here ... haven't tried that in awhile. In any case: compare here

It takes me a while to warm up to some shows. I didn't care much for Boardwalk Empire early on, thought it was good midway through, really got into it two episodes ago, but the last episode got me totally hooked. They've done an amazing job of developing the characters. I didn't think much of Pitt but he's really been awesome. I still don't know if Bushemi is the best for the role but I can easily overlook it now. Like most great shows, it doesn't matter which scene they cut to, they're all good.

It's almost the same path I took the first time I watched The Wire.

I agree it's gotten better with each episode. When Jimmy went to Chicago is when the show shifted for me. And though I found maybe the first four episodes kind of dull, they are paying off now. Buscemi is good enough, but Michael Pitt and Michael Shannon are totally stealing the show, and Jack Huston and Stephen Graham have a chance to be awesome secondary characters. Also a little overlooked is Michael Stuhlbarg who plays Rothstein. He pulls off the smarmy, menacing vibe flawlessly.

Looking forward to the finale tonight. From the previews it looks like we get at least two hits in the episode, and I'm wondering if we'll be left with a big cliffhanger. Should be good.

I think the last episode was equaly brilliant and risky at the same time. Let me be the first to ask the quesiton - what if they didn't sign up for a seond season? The whole last episode was nothing more then a set up for season two.

Somewhat uneventful for a finale, IMO. We knew the Commodore wanted to take the city back for himself and Jimmy, but real suprised to see Nucky's brother involved in the plan. Other than that, not much else to talk about, or am I missing something?

interesting finale, some good action, but obviously there's a whole lot more coming next year.

It sure looked like it.

I think it was just a driver of no importance to steal back the money for themselves.

The finale was terribly predictable. I'm on record as being a huge fan of this series, but the finale was by far the worst episode of the entire first season, IMO.

And that will be hard to trace back to Lucky.

What, Lucy being pregnant with VanAllen's baby wasn't big enough for ya?! :lmao: Agreed, like I stated above, the only real surprise was Nucky's brother scheming against him with the Commodore and Jimmy.

Out of pure curiousity... what would you guys who didnt like the season finale... what was missing or wasnt tied up in that episode?

I think it was a solid episode, got the ball rolling for season 2, and tied up loose ends on season 1.

Not that I didn't like it, it must just sort of meh. I guess I was hoping for a big "oh ####" sort of moment and wondering what's coming next. It didn't exactly leave me pining for season 2.

I think theres a few things to look forward to in Season 2

2 - whats Margarets Deal? She found the rag in her cake, which is a sign of destitute life... is she playing Nucky so she doesnt face that? how much sin is she willing to live with?

3 - Who did Luciano shoot in the final scene?

4 - What will Van Alden do now that he got Lucy prego? Pretty big sign from God

5 - Where does Al Capone fit in all of this...

I think that's just a byproduct of the awesomeness of the episodes before hand. We got used to the 'oh ####' moments for the past month or so.Can I just say - Jimmy's mom

Nelson van Alden descending into madness has been fun to watch. One of the best all time slaps ever.

So this doesn't start up again until Fall of 2011? I guess Game of Thrones in the spring will have to keep us busy.

I wonder if the show will last long enough to cover 3 events which occurred in a 6 month span from '28 to '29?

the assassination of Arnold Rothstein

the Atlantic City Conference

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();All 3 of those events dramatically turned American crime into the organization we see it as today.

Was Nucky involved with the poisoning of the commodore?

Jimmys Mom certainly appears to a strong possibility of being involved with the Maid being a scapegoat.

But maybe Nucky and Mom were both trying to get rid of the commodore?
I think this is why he didn't have her arrested and told her to get lost.

The series was renewed for a second season after the premiere episode debut. It was the highest rated hour in HBO history, I believe.

Somewhat uneventful for a finale, IMO. We knew the Commodore wanted to take the city back for himself and Jimmy, but real suprised to see Nucky's brother involved in the plan. Other than that, not much else to talk about, or am I missing something?
But I think the characters are just as important as the plot line. So for me, the interaction between Nucky and Margaret was as powerful as anything I saw last night.

I thought Luciano just killed another dellasio brother. Luciano, Capone, and Jimmy all talked about where they were together, and then we had the scenes where all three of them (plus Richard) started whacking guys.

So the bible the maid gave Nucky obviously had some information concerning the plot of the Commodor against him in it. I guess the question is whether Nucky is 1. aware of Elit's involvement or 2. got Eli involved as a spy

The looks on their faces, particularly Nucky's, as they progressed through that last scene staring out at the sea were great.

I'm not sure Nucky was behind the poisoning, I think he figure it was better to not make a scene than to arrest her, maybe felt a little sympathy towards her. But the book definitely has something to tip Nucky off.

I did like the line about how they have spooks voting and Chalky getting pissed and the guy quickly - dead people, dead people.

So the guy Jimmy had a beef with that was having sex with his mom, was he talking to Al about where the brothers were to kill? Jimmy looked like he was there in the background. So I assume their differences are set aside for now?

Yes. And I love the giant Gillette Safe Razor sign. Razors had a big role in last night's episode.

As was the look on Chalky's face at the party.

:( Though I wasn't quite sure how to read it. What's your take on it?

"We're movin' on up."

Definitely. I took that part with the bible as her little personal notepad. He looked curious/intrigued after reading from it, so I thought he got some good info from it. And I don't think he knows Eli is involved with the Commodore plotting against him. Eli seems pretty pissed at his older brother, especially after he fired him, and it's gotten worse with each episode. Also to add, Eli was watching the interaction between drunk Jimmy and Nucky, and seen that Jimmy wasn't too happy with Nucky as well and realized Jimmy would be onboard with an overthrow.
So the guy Jimmy had a beef with that was having sex with his mom, was he talking to Al about where the brothers were to kill? Jimmy looked like he was there in the background. So I assume their differences are set aside for now?
Yes, after Rothstein promised to end all hostilities with Nucky at the meeting, Jimmy has no choice but to back off of Luciano, for now. And it was Jimmy, Al and Luciano discussing the location of the Dalessio brothers right after the meeting broke up.

I don't think the Luciano and Lansky shooting at the end was anything more than one of these "this is what these people learned" or "this is what these people are going to do" scenes that alot of HBO shows are famous for. We all more or less know how these two are going to end up.

I don't think Nucky was behind the poisioning.....in all actuality I thought it was more of a political decision that involved the maids race and his (in the previous scene) somewhat tenuous situation with Chalky.
