***OFFICIAL*** Boardwalk Empire thread (1 Viewer)

This show is already approaching an all time top 10 best TV show. Brilliant.
Really? (What's your new top 10, and what did BE replace?)It's a nice start, but let's not get carried away.
That's an excellent question. Since I am a guy that often types without thinking, I'm glad you asked it. I'll post a list based on categories - since it's hard to compare comedies with dramas. Best dramatic series of all time:

1. The Wire

2. The Sopranos

3. Deadwood

4. Breaking Bad

5. Mad Men

6. Six Feet Under

7. Boardwalk Empire

8. Hill Street Blues

9. Oz

10. Twin Peaks

Honorable mentions:

NYPD Blue

Rome

Thirtysomething

Law and Order

All in the Family*

* I know that All in the Family was sold as a comedy, but that show did drama better than most drama series.

Dude.... :lmao: You can't be serious about OZ. I saw every episode. It's a guilty pleasure. It's closer to a comedy than a drama. It doesn't belong on any "greatest ever" lists. The storylines were absurd. Anti-aging pills for convicts? Dylan McKay buried behind a brick wall? Cereal O'Reilly? And how does a warden get to keep his job for three years when ten prisoners a week are getting shanked?

It's a crime to have that in your Top 10 instead of NYPD Blue.

"Oz" was terrible.

The pills accelerated aging; they did not prevent it. I think you probably knew this but just screwed up typing out your post. Also, it was Cyril O'Reilly... not "Cereal." :lmao:

Agreed on all the rest though.

I am a big fan of NYPD Blue. I agree that OZ is silly. No doubt. But it had some strong points:• Showed me things I've never seen before

• Produced some of the best all time characters in TV history

• Despite the melodramatic nature, was very well-written

Love NYPD Blue, but couldn't list both Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. And almost every great quality of NYPD Blue came as a direct result of Hill Street Blues.

ARE YOU SURE???

I don't remember seeing Gretchen Mol in all her glory before.
 I think she's been naked in her films more than she hasn't been naked.

Go to CelebrityMovieArchive dot com. Search for her name. Click the "eyeball" to the right of each scene description.

 I wanted her to take her shirt off so bad in Rounders but it never happened.
One of my favorite flicks. You wanted her to take her shirt off. I wanted her to stop talking. :hophead: Any time I start thinking it's more fun to be married/have a girlfriend than be single, I put that DVD in.

Jebus you're so correct.

Still surprised to see the "meh" comments. Are y'all expecting shootouts every episode?
Not at all. The show is made very well. Great acting, editing, costumes, dialogue etc etc. But the storyline is captivating to me. I just don't really care who does what or where anything is going. Even the surprise hook-up at the end wasn't interesting. I'm just not seeing the 'drama'.

Two minor quibbles:

1) After that gang shot up the brothel in Chicago, I think that Capone and his crewe would have exacted revenge swiftly and painfully. Didn't seem right that nothing's been done about it yet. Perhaps they're setting up the Chicago boss to look weak and ready for permanent replacing.

2) When the little person said, "We don't want to dress up like Leprechauns. It's demeaning." That sounded a little modern to me. I think he should have said something like, "No man should be treated like that." ...or something.

Yep I think alot of people were expecting more of a Sopranos/mafia style story. And they're not getting that yet so the disappointment is growing.
My problem with this week's episode was that the main events were pretty predictable. I don't need a shoot out every week, or any week, but they telegraphed stuff and that's just not very compelling.

The main problem was the storyline was preposterous.Widow with two kids who is nearly destitute rats out the biggest gangster in town to the FBI? Which in turn causes Lucky to fall for her?

He's not falling for her, he's shutting her up.

Was I the only one that wanted Nucky to turn back into Tony Blundetto and just cold bloodedily kill her? I see and understand what's going on though. But man was she a ##### for ratting him out.

So are we just not bothering with spoiler tags in here?
They're not spoilers if the already happened. If you haven't watched the latest episode yet, don't come into the thread.HTH
So the purpose of the spoiler tag would be...
Spoilers to lots of shows are all over the place online...some people like to discuss them, others don't. Also, if a movie just came out over the weekend, and people start posting on Monday, spoilers are probably the right call. With a TV show, more people are apt to watch it very close to when it airs, thus spoilers aren't really necessary. If they were, the entire thread would be in spoiler tags.

Two more Sopranos alums tonight. Benny, and the kid who always got heroin for Chris.

And of course we already had Tony B. and googly-eyed Butchie.
Annnnnnnd two more from this past episode. (Just watched it today... my new work schedule is kicking my ###).- Carm's father Hugh DeAngelis, playing Nucky's father.

- The fat guy from a rival crew who was killed by Carlo and Silvio after making wisecracks about Vito's death.

That makes six. Why not just hire Bobby Baccala to play an ATF agent.

Who is Agent Van Alden beating himself up over? Is that a young Widow Schroeder?

Thought for sure Al was taking out Jimmy after being embarassed like that.

Yes, he got her immigration paperwork, his boss commented on it. Not sure what is up with him.

Pretty sure he's whipping himself for having impure thoughts about a 16 year old. Or it could be simply because he's having impure thoughts about a woman who isn't his wife; perhaps a devout Christian knows the answer to that one.

Not a devout Christian....but that's how I read it as well. They made a point to show the picture (who we assume is his wife), and then he put the picture down and replaced it with Margarets. At first I thought he was gonna rub one out to her, but I guess he just whipped himself until he didn't have the urge to anymore.I think that's some sort of Catholic thing....but not 100% sure.

I think he's on some Opus Dei business and is beating himself because he wasn't able to save this formerly innocent woman from becoming a concubine. Could be totally wrong but that was the impression that I got.

Hmmm....didn't think of this angle...definitely has legs though

I've got to admit I don't find this show too compelling but I keep watching because everyone is raving about it. Whats sets me off the most is the writing, it doesn't feel like the 20's to me, but then again I didn't live then. I also feel that the writing is very heavy handed, like the writers think that they can't convey what they are trying to say without handing you a map and a compass. It is so overdone, like the acting, that the story doesn't have a chance to breathe.

I thought he was "getting off" in some weird masochist way
