Who is Agent Van Alden beating himself up over? Is that a young Widow Schroeder?Thought for sure Al was taking out Jimmy after being embarassed like that.
Yes, he got her immigration paperwork, his boss commented on it. Not sure what is up with him.
Pretty sure he's whipping himself for having impure thoughts about a 16 year old. Or it could be simply because he's having impure thoughts about a woman who isn't his wife; perhaps a devout Christian knows the answer to that one.
That's how I took it.

Three episodes into it, I'd say it's roughly on par with Treme. There's a lot to like about it, but it's not as captivating as The Wire.

I think he's on some Opus Dei business and is beating himself because he wasn't able to save this formerly innocent woman from becoming a concubine. Could be totally wrong but that was the impression that I got.
I think he's whipping himself to resist the urge to rub one out to her. I think they've shown that he has a bit of interest in her before.

So Jimmy's wife is playing with a girl that's cool but what happened to the money he keeps sending back to her that she is not getting? Is that the money shipment that the Italian Boys were talking about?

Richard Harrow (the sniper with half a face) is played by Jack Houston. Anjelica & Danny's nephew - John's grandson.

The final scene was a classic.

Thought the actor playing this part was fantastic - facial tics and all.

I was just about to comment to the wife right before this scene about how slow this episode went. Loved that scene.Jimmy's becoming my favorite character by far.

Still surprised to see the "meh" comments. Are y'all expecting shootouts every episode?
Yep I think alot of people were expecting more of a Sopranos/mafia style story. And they're not getting that yet so the disappointment is growing.
My problem with this week's episode was that the main events were pretty predictable. I don't need a shoot out every week, or any week, but they telegraphed stuff and that's just not very compelling.
The main problem was the storyline was preposterous.Widow with two kids who is nearly destitute rats out the biggest gangster in town to the FBI? Which in turn causes Lucky to fall for her?
He's not falling for her, he's shutting her up.
Whoa, whoa, fellas. He fell for her long before that episode.

I haven't come in this thread for nearly two weeks, because I wasn't caught up. I knew if I came in here, I would read something I didn't want to.
Yep. I've sadly avoided the Rubicon thread for the same reason. I'd love to participate in the conversation, but I am very far behind on my DVR.

:loco: easily my favorite character. Michael Pitt is a pretty good actor.

:hot: I remember seeing him in a small role in "Finding Forrester" and thinking he had a future.

I agree the show is not nearly as good as The Wire yet. But I think it's 10x better than Treme.
I thought Treme was pretty solid. Kind of hard to compare the two shows IMO.
I suffered through three full episodes of Treme. Well acted, well cast, good acting, but completely bereft of one single character or storyline I gave a #### about.

Excellent episode. Loved all the war stuff with Jimmy. And especially loved all the Nucky business with his dad and his dad's house.

I'm starting to believe this now, until this week I thought his initial feelings were sympathy for leaving her a widow. Seeing that he went after her right after Nucky and his Irish boys got busted and she was the one who snitched them out, I just assumed it was to keep her quiet and on his side. But also I didn't realize he dumped butter face for Margaret, that and seeing him opeing up to her leads me to believe he has real feelings for her.

Yes. The thing to remember is that Nucky is perhaps the smartest guy in the series. He even goes so far as to tell one of the characters, "Read a ####ing book." So that vapid hooker he had for a girlfriend was not working for him. I think he fell in love with the Irish lady almost instantly, and despite his inability to commit to his hooker girlfriend, I think he is going to marry the Irish chick.

Best episode of the series so far. Jimmy is indeed the most interesting character at this point, I almost wish he had an entire series to himself. One thing that struck me as odd was how Nucky didn't pursue Chalky's accusation that Nucky tried to set him up - seems like Nucky doesn't let things like that slip by and would have tried to at least get more info on what happened.

I thought the same thing. I assume that either Chalky or Nucky will pursue that more.

Here's a  hypothesis I'm entertaining: that wad of bills at the end of the episode which Nucky handed to that guy he was going to give his father's house to was the same wad of bills that little guy offered to Chalky to "sell direct." That'd imply that Chalky was right, Nucky was testing him, so Nucky just shrugged it off lamely when called out to not make a bigger issue of it. It would also imply that that little guy is an inside man for Nucky with the New Yorkers and/or the Italian Brothers - with the possibility that the little guy is double double crossing Nucky with them - as he's a critical player in the scene with those two contingents.Probably totally inaccurate, but what the heck, it's fun to assume Nucky's playing that deep of a game for now.

Inaccurate....the little guy was Meyer Lansky...a real life well known associate of Rothstein and Luciano. The real life Lansky was the inspiration for the character Hyman Roth in Godfather II.

You gave up at the wrong time, IMO. I think your assessment of the first three episodes is fairly accurate, but things started to pick up after that. The characters and storylines became more interesting.

I agree. Great scene and character. I also really liked the fact that Jimmy called the hooker over for Richard and she didn't hesitate or act repulsed by his appearance. I guess that's why she is a pro.

Dammit. Sounds like I need to give it another shot.

Exactly. Lansky was a huge player in the NY mob scene in later years along with Luciano and Bugsy Siegel and Frank Costello. He might have been legitimately trying to bypass Nucky to get to the booze for Rothstein.Best episode of the series so far. This show is really growing on me. At first I was expecting more in the lines of a typical mafia movie with the HBO touch of excellence, but this seems to be a lot more drawn out with some real interesting character developments. Its slow, but its like sipping on a glass of fine liquor; you need to savior it.

:goodposting: 's all aroundWatching the previews for next ween, glad they're keeping him around as a character. Looks like a badass.

stopped watching after the episode where Jimmys prostitute gets her face cut up.

Has the show gotten any better since then?

I don't know if its just the "wow its Young Al Capone" feel to the Capone actor but he absolutely nails every scene he is in. They are showing him just enough that each time he is on the screen he just satisfies viewers. PS If Boardwalk goes on for like 4 or 5 seasons and Capone is still a character that actor playing him will be typecast for life and never be able to play another role IMO, sort of like how all the memorable Soprano's actors have never done crap since show
If not Capone, at least American gangsters. He played Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies.

So far, I'm struggling to come up with one aspect of this show that isn't awesome. I guess the giggling gangster, but he's such a small player to this point that it hasn't bothered me much.

Only 3 episodes left to Season 1 and things are really heating up. Was a little disappointed with the lack of Al Capone screen time yesterday but the show gets better and better each week.

Looks like there will be a full out war over Atlantic City.

That's it? Sucks.

Great episode last night. I doubt I'd be able to pull off hitting myself in the head with a rock like that.

Also:  MacDonald (and Mol) - I think Margaret has overtaken Jimmy as the most interesting character.

I could probably do without the subplot with Jimmy's wife (unless it'll play into the larger story somehow).

I definitely don't see Steve Buschemi supporting actor stereotype in his portrayal of Nucky - he's doing a fantastic, understated job.

My favorite episode so far. Nucky telling Jimmy that his path to freedom was not through the Justice System and we knew Nucky had connections and the witness would soon be dead.Ending scene where Margaret ends up with blood on her new dress was well done.
