***OFFICIAL*** Boardwalk Empire thread (2 Viewers)

 Then why watch the show?
Because it's a good show.
Yeah it is. I just couldn't see watching (and enjoying) some work of historical fiction and not be curious as to the real history. Bottom line is that if someone wants spoiler alerts about things that happen to be actual historical facts they're asking for a lot.
Alright... now im convinced youre fishing. You do understand that some people may be interested in learning the details via of the show, right? And then (if they want) go ahead and look up the historical facts after-wards. How can this possibly be beyond you?
Why would people want to watch a show about prohibition in the first place if they have never even really knew anything about it beforehand? That is what makes the show as interesting as it is because most people know how the prohibition era worked, and how it spawned the great American Gangsters. Calling for spoiler tags on American history is completely absurd. If a person is dumb enough not to have any knowledge of prohibition, they obviously do not understand the core aspects that this show brings to the table.

**Spoiler** Prohibition was the banning of alcohol until 1933....sorry if I ruined Season 3 for anyone :lmao:

I know a bit about Arnold Rothstein because of his involvement in the story of

. I ended up reading some stories about him as a gambler, and then the World Series stuff... I don't know much about him as a bootlegger. But the background information I do know about him has made his scenes in Boardwalk Empire more enjoyable, not less. I imagine I'd like the show that much better if I knew more about Capone, Luciano, Lansky, et al.Anyone know of a good book or movie about all these guys?

Gotta love when the history nerds get their panties in a wad because others aren't more like them. And thanks for being a #### and ruining the arc of main character of the show for anybody else who didn't know because somebody called you a name.

Bottom line is that you shouldn't reveal spoilers, and your convoluted defense is irrelevant.
Historical fact is a pretty tenuous when trying to defend it with the spoiler tag though.
They can be. But I cant imagine people would be arguing them (in this thread) until after the events have unfolded on the show.

Intellectual elitism always works well in social situations. Good luck with that.

The original debate here was never about Prohibition. But thatnks for following along.

Exactly. I'm trying to help here, guy. You might want to try to do the same.

The irony is that it's not even intellectual elitism. It's merely knowledge of the details of a small handful of people who were gangsters in the '20s. BFD. I maintain they have no more relevance to anybody today than Rayfel Edmond did. Can you guys tell me anything about Rayful Edmond?

You realize this isn't really a "social situation", right?
Interaction with other humans, be it in written form or at a party, is a social situation.

Do you have aspergers?
More like Tourette'sBUT NUCKY JOHNSON DIDN'T DIE UNTIL THE 1960s SO THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE NUCKY THOMPSON IS NEVER GOING TO DIE ON BOARDWALK EMPIRE.
And this is all that I was trying to avoid. But thanks for being a giant dik about it.

Nothing. It was a rhetorical question. This is a lame discussion. Maybe we just need to start a separate no spoilers thread.

Of course that doesn't mean Thompson CAN'T be killed.Just think...if they do kill off Nucky on the show what a cool surprise it will be.

Yes it is a spoiler in the context a show based on real people and events when many people watching don't know exactly what went on. But keep ####ing that chicken.

And I think most people are pretty decent about using them once it's been established that some people have had their head in the sand in regards to American History and American pop culture :P ....but I don't particularly feel like getting jumped on because I don't mention that the Allies win WWII, The Americans win the American Revolution or the Roman Empire falls in spoiler tags.

You are using examples of things that are common knowledge... thats the whole point of the debate here. What happens to Myer Lansky doesnt exactly = JFK getting his head blown off. Agree?

Once again...history isn't a "spoiler".I hope you haven't seen Titanic yet because the ship sinks.
Are you seriously trying to compare the fate of Nucky Thompson/Johnson to the sinking of the ####### Titanic? Really? You dont see where the issue is here?
What is it with you guys and profanity? The issue is that you guys are here to talk about a show that contains characters that either were real people or based on real people. Some of us know the real histories behind this people/characters. I don't think we should have to tip-toe around those who don't. Seriously: Knowing the historical facts WILL NOT ruin the show. They've already taken a lot of liberties with the actual history behind these people and this era.

It's Meyer, not Myer. And to many of us it does.

Let's keep any discussion of the show about what has happened on the show. There's no need to discuss what actually happened to some of these people.

Minor spoiler below that most people already know about Capone.

For instance, Al Capone died of syphilis. If we see him with a gun to his head, that's not going to be very dramatic cause we know he makes it. His story is known though. If the same happens with Rothstein or Luciano or Lansky, people don't know those stories quite as well so let's allow those who aren't familiar with them to maintain suspense.

Good luck with that. Seems some here place the value of their need to flex their history cred over that of others enjoyment of the show. That horse has left the barn. Come and join me in The Official NO SPOILERS Boardwalk Empire thread, where at last look "we" were considering the sexual merits of one Esther Randolph.

Dude, you really want us to SPOILER tag ACTUAL HISTORICAL FACTS? Should we do this in every movie & TV show thread?Dumb & Dumber: "We landed on the MOON!"

we actually landed on the moon in 1969
Homeland: "An American POW has been turned by an Al Qaueda terrorist"

Cmon man. I'm trying to be impartial to both sides here, but there's no way you can say the story of Meyer Lansky is anywhere remotely close to being as widely known that JFK was shot. The fact that we've had him referred to in this very thread as both Myer and Myra should be all the proof you need that he's not quite as famous as you want to believe he was.

In fact it might help you enjoy it even more. Ex: a young Bugsy Siegel making a cameo, or how the Dempsey-Carpentier fight was one of the first examples of mass-media hyping what was pretty much a dog of a sporting event. The more you know...

How many times does this have to be explained ON THE SAME PAGE?Not all historical facts = common knowledge.

Landing on the Moon = Common knowledge.

Nucky Johnson getting shot in the head by Al Capone = NOT common knowledge.

Are you failing to see the diferences here on purpose?

Intellectual curiosity hasnt prompted anybody to look into these guys/the era?
I did  I never heard of Rothstein, Nucky, or Lansky before.
But that's kinda the point. Not everyone wants to read up ahead of time to learn their stories. Some people want to let the show clue them into what happens. It's not like watching Pride of the Yankees or Titanic here. Nobody was watching Lou Gehrig and wondering "Oh man is he gonna make it???"

I'm just trying to figure out why we shouldn't discuss actual historical facts. It's not like I've got access to the actual scripts or something. There is nothing that says the writers can't do whatever the hell they want.

How many people (both sexes) under the age of 30 know who the hell Lou Gehrig is? Is this some sort of sports intellectual elitism?

Somewhere between the current state of alcohol's legality and who whacks whom on the HBO television gangster drama Boardwalk Empire.
