Decent episode, but I'm not convinced this show will survive the loss of Jimmy.
:goodposting:I don't want to start disliking this. Season 1 was excellent. I mostly liked last season. Last night though did not overly impress me itself nor does its apparent direction. Gyp Rossetti seems like a cartoon bad guy.

Yeah, the viciously brutal tough guy is fine, but we've seen that a lot on The Sopranos.Jimmy was one of the only characters with a shred of humanity. I fear the show is rudderless at this moment.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the episode. I'm glad the shows back on but I'll have to re-watch this one again.

I agree that Gyp Rossetti seems like a cartoon bad guy but I want to give him more time.

I like Harrow killing Manny but I wanted to see if they would keep up the Philly connection

Winter on Gyp:

Slate: Speaking of which, in Season 3, you introduce a fabulous but terrifying character, Gyp Rosetti, who is definitely a psychopath. Was there really a Gyp Rosetti?

Winter: No, he’s completely fictional. Gyp represents a new breed of gangster. Things got progressively more competitive and more violent as the 1920s progressed. When Prohibition was first enacted in 1920, most people stockpiled alcohol, thinking they’d have enough to last them for years. By 1923, that was starting to run out, so your average person started to rely more and more on criminals. Hence the profits in the alcohol game went up, and the competition and the violence increased as well. You had people like Gyp Rosetti, who were essentially low-level criminals starting to work their way into the game.

Great season premiere, imo. Got me all caught up on the storylines and set up the new season nicely. Why do you think Gyp gave Margaret the dog?
It's actually an old Sicilian tradition. When invited to another family's home for a celebration it is customary for the guest to give the hostess/lady of the house a gift. The most impressive gift would be that of livestock. If/when the hostess accepted the gift from the guest it was a unspoken invitation that the guest was welcome back any time. I wonder if this will come into play later.
I think a rooster would have been a more appropriate gift.

This feels like a Jimmy situation again...Didn't one of the producers say (after Jimmy died) that you never hear about the people who tried to be 'The Man' and that's what they were doing with Jimmy?

Oh yea, with his temper, attitude and spot on the food chain of gangsters, I doubt he lasts too long. Lansky and Nucky won't deal with his schtick for too long. Imagine if Gyp deals with Capone? He won't last that episode! Although he is associated with New York, that may be his only saving grace.

Gyp has a little Ralphie in him. Just no regard for his actions and we know he's gonna get it, probably before the end of this season, so just enjoy it while he's on.

I half expected Margaret to burst into song at the end of the episode. Many of the characters in last night's episode were more like caricatures.

Gyp will be good for a handful of memorable quotes each episode."why don't you go sit in the corner, short pants?"
"and you, you smug kite midget, creeping around like a ####### dentist with ether!""I'll #### you out like yesterday's sausage you bock trot-in #####!"LOL, he insulted everyone in the room!

Does Van Alden have 2 kids??
He must have had another with the nanny....that baby was younger than a year and a half.
So is van Alden going to break bad and go up against Capone?
That was a great scene in the flower shop. The actor that plays Capone looks like he put on some weight for the role.
Yup, said to the Mrs, well he has a job now if he wants it, since the iron sales doesn't look too promising. I thought he was going to lose it on the iron boss. Good storyline brewing, not only might be to up against Capone, but maybe Nucky as well, for a little vengeance. :thumbup:eta: and yes that's his second kid.

I loved Manny, was looking forward to seeing him more.
Same here. Weird show. I don't really get the killing great characters shtick. I was way more interested in Manny and Jimmy than I am Nucky.
These are characters in a very violent world. I'd rather people die off than be kept around via plot gymnastics and some massive leaps in logic, the way Sons of Anarchy does.Nobody was safe in Game of Thrones or The Wire either.

Mrs. Dogg and I swore that shop owner was Ron Howard's son. He looks like Howard, but nope.

That scene kinda had an ominous GF2/Frankie Five Angels feel to it. "Michael Corleone says hello."

I think the story and series continues to head in the right direction; telling the story of the changing of the guard in regards to organized crime in the urban areas of this country from a "good ole boy" system which mixed machine politics, graft, the manipulation of the various Legal institutions and the occasional strong arm tactic to legit, ruthless criminals. It's great how they got Nucky not even knowing what philosophy he believes in; at one turn killing a petty thief in cold blood, at another trying to continue a relationship with Attorny General Daugherty and at another....telling the other criminals that he's going to go legit and sell only to Rothstein.

That was a good scene. It was an interesting character moment for Capone in that he actually backed down. The way he'd been depicted so far, that didn't seem the most likely outcome. For me (as I said earlier) Capone, Harrow and VanAlden are the best parts of the show - even going back into last season. I also like the Chalky subplot, but they don't touch on him as regularly.

I read that Chalky will be in the next episode.

This is good posting. Television drama is evolving. The more conventions that are abandoned along the way the better. As much as you can detect hints of season-long story arcs with each episode, with a show like Boardwalk I have no idea what is going to happen scene-to-scene and that's a large part of what makes it great. If you can't smile at Harrow blasting Manny's face off, reevaluate your outlook in a hurry.

Finally caught up, harrow was just a revenge kill right?
Yes. Does he look like the type who would stroll around randomly gunning people down?
No - I meant was it just revenge or some other bigger plot, like with Nucky somehow...
I think we are to think looking at the paintings and discussing Mrs Jimmy again pushed Harrow to it, since he was in love with her.

This is about speculation on the new season, about a secondary character, but I'll put it in a spoiler tag just so I don't piss anyone off, although it's pretty obvious IMO.

Watching commercials for new shows, I seen William Forsythe(Manny) in previews for the new show The Mob Doctor. Is it safe to assume that Manny Horwitz doesn't last too long into season 3?
Not necessarily. Given his fairly minor role on BE, it's possible he's going to pull double-duty, a la Alison Brie.
Well, that didn't take long! Good to see Harrow get some payback, even if it was for Angela.

This Gyp guy is a piece of work. He's gonna be good.
I feel like Rossetti is kind of cheesy right now. Is he a real person?
Cheesy? Nah he's a maniac, you say hello the wrong way and he might shoot ya. Nothing I've read so far has said he's based on anyone in real life. The O'Banion crew is real though and had battles with Capone.Bobby Cannavale has come a long way since Third Watch.Didn't he play a gay cop on "Will and Grace" or something?I know I just saw him in "Win-Win"...which is an outstanding movie, BTW.

"If Stemler can avoid getting pinned, we can win this thing...."

"That's a HUGE f##king 'if'......"

"I can hear you, Coach..."

:lmao:

Yea....Jimmy told Harrow he was going to meet Nucky, who had Manny. I guess that revenge factors in too.

I was actually wondering how Harrow knew Manny killed Jimmy's wife.
Wasn't that why Nucky was bringing Manny to Jimmy...so Jimmy could revenge his wife?

Looking back at the episode, Manny heard the driver blow the horn but not the gunshot that killed the driver hmmmmm, just a flaw I guess?!?!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Harrow timed it with the shot to cover the sound. It was a smaller bullet wound, maybe he had a pistol too.

Yeah, I notice the wound as well just thought it was strange.
