I can't wait for the smug Sicilian to get bludgeoned to death. I hope its soon.
It does seem inevitable, doesn't it? I cringed at the "I got a gun...he got a gun...he got a gun...he got a gun!" bit. It's an interesting scenario that he tries to choke off Nucky's route to NYC via the gas station, but he's like a villain out of **** Tracy or something.
The weird thing to me is that they just cutoff the route. Why didn't they steal the booze? I thought he needed 500 cases of rum.

My take was that he didn't necessarily want Rothstein/Nucky looking to take him out, I think he just wanted to prove a point that he could and would be a thorn in their collective side, thus strong-arming them into selling him what he wanted.

Perhaps that would've touched off a full-scale war and angered Rothstein, whereas trying to shake down Nucky is just him asserting leverage. Maybe he's not so dumb! The scene where he's eating the spaghetti was pretty great.

I agree but I kinda like him. Maybe I just like Bobby Cannavale. If given the choice of seeing him get killed off or Margaret Schroeder-Thompson, I'd choose the latter 100 times out of 100.
But who will look after the children?

He'd be a dead man if he took the booze. It'd be bad enough to have one or the other after you, but both Rothstein and Nucky would surely end badly for him.

Man, I could watch an episode that just followed Rothstein around for an hour. In real time. Kicking ### in billiards, ####ting his brains out, etc.
:goodposting: Love this character. Probably my favorite character in the show at this point. Might've been all along.Could someone explain to me why they had to change the name of Buscemi's character, but they kept the real names of others (Rothstein, Capone, Luciano, etc.)?

I believe it's because they wanted to take more liberties with Nucky's story. So it's him, but it's not him. Rothstein, Capone, Torrio, Gordon, etc. all track along with how their real-life stories played out. I think that's right.I also don't think Rothstein is a h0m0. I think he was just a dandy.

I wasn't as focused on the show as I should have been when I watched this last one, but isn't it being suggested that Rothstein is banging the chick that Nucky's all smitten with?

You don't think he's a deadman now anyway? You steal it. Take it to NYC and sell it to Rothstein.

Rothstein kills you and takes it. And no, I don't think he's necessarily a deadman now. Nucky can make money off him. He just wanted somebody else to deal with him. It's either kill him and lose that business or just deal with him. I think he will just deal with him.

You and me both. He's the anti-Margaret. He could be talking about his choice of toilet paper for 10 minutes and I would be riveted.

Have you seen A Serious Man?
I have. I thought it was OK, but I can't imagine a better actor than Stuhlbarg to play Rothstein. He's captivating.

Although the theme this season is Nucky becoming a real gangster.

Nucky mentioned the address of her apt. building, and he knew that she lived there. It seemed that Billie and her friend were into banging powerful dudes, so perhaps they were previously intertwined.

I couldn't care less about her, her stupid kids, her pre-natal care at the hospital, whether or not she wants to bang the Irish dude, etc..etc.. Every time she comes on screen, I start to zone out.
100% agree. She is becoming a real bore on the show, and it seems like she gets more screen time then Buscemi even. I honestly want to fast forward each of her scenes lately

Rothstein is her landlord, he owns the building Billie is living in. So yea, good chance he's hitting it too.
Yep. He said he'd talk to Rothstein about the leak.
Wouldn't it be  if it was Rothstein who's been calling her when Nuckys there, and making him jealous? I can almost guarantee we know the guy who's calling, so Nucky will have him killed.

great episode tonight IMO

Harrow just continues to absolutely kill every scene that he's in. Great character and Jack Huston nails it.

Gyp Rosetti, the arch-villain of "Boardwalk" season 3, is a man who is perpetually ready to take offense to any comment, no matter how innocent. He grew up in Sperlinga, Sicily, a place whose name can be translated to mean "cave," and if he wasn't so violent, he would be all but crippled with self-consciousness about his lack of education and class. Instead, he's a man you have to perpetually walk on eggshells around — and even then, it only does so much, as we discover when he treats Nucky's "Bon Fortuna" card as yet another insult, and when the Tabor Heights sheriff has the fatal timing to also wish him good luck that night, Gyp burns the poor sonuva##### alive with gas from the filling station. It's yet another power play by Gyp, in an episode full of people seizing control of a situation, often through subterfuge, or by usurping someone else's identity.Mickey tries to beef up his reputation at the warehouse by taking credit for Manny's death, which understandably doesn't sit well with Richard Harrow. (Richard, unlike Gyp, is able to control his most deadly impulses, even when taking the deepest offense.) Margaret expertly plays Dr. Landau and the bishop off one another, exploiting Nucky's Order of Saint Gregory ceremony to get the pre-natal education program approved. And Gillian is still acting like Jimmy is alive, which allows her to control the Commodore's estate while also living in denial about the many sins she committed against her son.Gillian is understandably not happy to see Jimmy's murderer show up at her place with Gyp in tow. And though Nucky isn't making any major power plays this episode — he's too busy getting dragged into both Gyp's neuroses and Margaret's ambition — he does spend a lot of time dwelling on Jimmy's murder, picturing him as a young choir boy with the same bullet wound under his eye. Once it becomes clear that Richard isn't there to kill him — Richard explains that Nucky and Margaret always treated him well, and, besides, "Jimmy was a soldier. He fought. He lost." — novice killer Nucky has an opportunity to ask the more hardened Richard whether he'll ever stop thinking about his victims."You know the answer to that yourself," Richard tells him.Gyp Rosetti, on the other hand, doesn't seem like he's particularly troubled by the men he has beaten, shot and burned to death. He's a sociopath, plain and simple, and while that's a much less complicated antagonist for Nucky than either Rothstein or Jimmy were, it also makes Nucky's path tougher. Rothstein could be reasoned with, and Jimmy had a conscience and a sense of self. Gyp seems to act entirely on impulse, and a cold and calculating man like Nucky Thompson isn't ideally-equipped to battle such a foe. Some other thoughts:* Richard and Nucky's conversation also clarifies that Manny died specifically because of Angela's murder, and not Jimmy's. One of the more frustrating parts of the post-Jimmy show so far is that Richard has become more marginalized, and Jack Huston is too good for that. (I watched the scene where he hears about Mickey's boasting three or four times, and each time my eye was initially drawn to the painted mask, like always, before the half of Huston's face that was acting grabbed my attention.) I hope the writers find a way to make Richard more central to the narrative as the season moves along.* Given what happened to his last few co-workers at his old job, I'm not sure Nelson Van Alden (even under the George Muller alias) is a man you want to be punking. * Nucky's dreams are haunted not just by young Jimmy, but by Billie Kent, and in his waking hours, he's still fixated on what hse's doing, and who she's with, when he's not around. Not healthy.

What did nucky say to Gyp when he was getting out of the car, Gyp says something like glad we can be friends or something to that effect.... MY sound went out

I believe Gyp said something like "Life is better with friends" Nucky replied with "No one will deny that" or something like that

A filler episode for a series that can't afford too many more filler episodes.
:goodposting:Even Van Alden's scenes were bland and forgettable (with the exception of his wife getting off on him - she's got a nice bod).Looks like a Capone heavy episode next week, so hopefully things will be interesting again.

HBO renews Boardwalk Empire for a fourth season

Promising at least another season of people in tweed smashing things on each other's heads interrupted by the occasional topless showgirl, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fourth year. The show has seen a slight ratings decline since last season, down to an average of 7.2 million viewers from its 8.6 million average in the wake of losing Michael Pitt and, of course, Dabney Coleman, whose devoted legion of "Cole-miners" that we'll just assume must exist have been sitting out the show in protest. Nevertheless, it's continued to be a solid winner come Emmys time, it's got loads of deserved critical adulation, and they already built all these sets.

Finally caught up. Geez. Tough 3 episodes to sit through and not in a good way.

I love the idea of keeping your viewers on the edge of their seats, but Jimmy was a big loss. Major loss. For me at least. They really wrote themselves into a corner there and now we're starting to see the results of that.

I didn't want to admit this at first because I think there are a lot of different directions they could've gone from there (and done fairly well), but you're right. The writers seem lost without Jimmy's character. Even more so without Manny. They've still got a solid complement of characters. But Chalky can't lead a serious plot line, so they'd better figure something out with Rothstein or Capone. The opportunity to make this a great series is still there, but they need to figure this out, or Season 3 is going to be filed with the likes of Sopranos Season 5/6: tons of promise followed by tons of disappointment and unmet expectations.

i disagree. Get him off the island with his daughter and get him involved with the main plot lines. Same with Jack Houston.
