***Official Cardinals vs. Braves Single Game Elimination Thread*** (1 Viewer)

All the excitement of a game 7 wrapped into one single game.

Start time in an hour and a half.

Go Cards!!

Getting ready to head out to the bar to watch this.

I hated the idea of this game, at first, but even as a Braves fan, it makes a ton of sense. I thought it was unfair to the 1st wildcard team, but screw it, wildcard teams don't deserve ####. Makes the end of the season more fun and gives a huge reward for Division winners. Makes sense all around.

Here's hoping Medlen holds form. :banned:

Anybody else having problems with the audio/video not matching up on TBS? I'm hearing either the pitch caught or hit like a fraction of a second before it actually happens, and it's annoying the crap out of me. Wondering if it's me or TBS.

I really hope Chipper's last game doesn'y include that terrible throw.

Starting Ross over McCann has been a great decision so far.

Went from excitement to anger quickly on the Simmons bunt.

What a disaster this game has been for Atlanta. Terrible, terrible execution. If one team were going to melt down defensively I would have bet on the red birds.

This is the spot Chipper has been waiting for all year.

EDIT: Nevermind

Don't agree with these announcers ripping Atlanta fans for throwing crap onto the field. They're not throwing it at players or umpires. They're tossing trash onto the field as a protest. Totally legitimate move by the fans to express their displeasure.

This is why I couldnt coach or manage or anything. I would have gotten ejected and probably taken that LF umpire with me

I'm a Cards fan, and completely agree. That's a terrible call, and they are saying what the fans did was embarrassing. But the only real embarrassing thing was the call. Sure, ideally crowds never litter the field with garbage, but you gave them a pretty good excuse to there....

Yeah, not sure I've ever been more proud of Atlanta Braves fans. They just saw a team's season and a beloved player's career almost certainly ended by an insane call. Not sure there's a more appropriate reaction than that.

Cardinals have a history of getting the fans worked up like this....starting in 1934

Why is the infield fly rule even eligible to be called with no man on 1st? Without a man on 1st, it negates the entire purpose of the call.
i wasnt watching. is that what happened? i thought they only call it with runners on first and second or bases loaded

Not a big baseball fan, what does a protest really mean?
mlb will hear the protest and will decide whether to uphold or overturn the call. if they overturn the call theyd replay the game from that point. look up the pine tar incident for a case where a protested call was overturned

Not a big baseball fan, what does a protest really mean?
Almost certainly, it means nothing. In some alternate universe where MLB cared about getting this game right and didn't mind screwing up their postseason schedule, I think the game could be replayed from the point of the screwed up call. I have no idea if it's ever happened though.

PROTESTING GAMES.

Each league shall adopt rules governing procedure for protesting a game, when a manager claims that an umpire’s decision is in violation of these rules. No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire. In all protested games, the decision of the League President shall be final.

Even if it is held that the protested decision violated the rules, no replay of the game will be ordered unless in the opinion of the League President the violation adversely affected the protesting team’s chances of winning the game.

Rule 4.19 Comment: Whenever a manager protests a game because of alleged misapplication of the rules the protest will not be recognized unless the umpires are notified at the time the play under protest occurs and before the next pitch, play or attempted play. A protest arising on a game-ending play may be filed until 12 noon the following day with the league office.

So essentially you will get an apology and a "suck it up" letter from the league.

It seems as the umps call of infield fly caused the SS to back off as well.
What game are you watching?
Yeah, looks like SS peeled off before the signal, although we don't have the audio to know if he called something. Do they shout a call in that case or is it completely visual?
Yes he would shout that the infield fly rule was in effect as he lifted his arm- usually they yell "batter is out"ETA - and they need to yell loud enough so that the runners know if they are advancing

But you are in Philly. You can't be serious.

So the guys that are going to rule on the protest are have major St. Louis ties - Torre and Garagiola

 It was a bull#### call. I have no problem with fans tossing trash onto the field. Why do you?

You actually cannot protest a judgement call (which this will be ruled)

You can only protest if a rule was screwed up. Like if there was a runer on second and third and they flubbed up and called it, that can be protested.

That is why it will get thrown out.

Well for one it would be naive to think no fans were throwing at the umps or opposing players. Maybe 99% weren't and were 'protesting' but they just gave the 1% who would take shots a perfect cover to do so and have almost no chance of being caught.Of course it should also be obvious that there isn't a good reason for the fans to cross the line between out of play and in play areas.
