Please explain the self evident explanation.. noone has been able to do so yet.Thank you. The rationale for wide testing of the populace is kind of self-evident. Is "why test?" a talking point somewhere or something?
Yeah... when all is said and done I think the "death rates" are going to turn out to be a proxy for "testing rates".I think it's just being organized
ETA: I'd guess Germany is more SK than Italy
You don't know where the disease is.. or rather yes we do. Everywhere. This couldn't be more wrong. It is the only thing we can actually do. Make sure we know who is infected allows us to quarantine the right folks and also avoids fear. You know where diseases is and we can effectively add social distances measures in those areas. Vs. shutting down the entire country.
The two gallons I bought (and linked to) from Bulk Apothecary has shipped, will arrive on the 16th. Still in stock.Asked when will hand sanitizer be back on the shelves. They're still shipping it but it's getting sold out so quickly
Guess you didn’t pay any attention to what they did in China and Wuhan to contain the virus. You don't know where the disease is.. or rather yes we do. Everywhere.
How fast it gets everywhere is the only question.
Limiting mass gatherings makes sense for slowing it down. Trying to test each individual that gets sick is a comical waste of time.
Did they contain it?Guess you didn’t pay any attention to what they did in China and Wuhan to contain the virus.
put it in a sealed mason jar and pour a little at a time? If it's 91%, it's a good idea to add some water maybe liquid hand soap to make it more effective.Anyone know if it is effective to have a bowl of rubbing alcohol that you can repeatedly dip your hands in? Will the alcohol remain sterile? Will your hands be ok?
Saw on twitter:discussion with CEO of my small company this morning:
Me - we have to put WFH policy in place. gotta prepare now for what is certain to come next week.
Him - there are no confirmed cases yet in [city of several million people where we live], and only a handful in the entire state.
Me - it is 100% certain this virus is in [city of several million people where we live], its just that they are not testing. We have to be ready.
Him - Schools are open, we need to be at work.
Me - it is 100% certain many if not most schools and daycares in [city of several million people where we live] will be closed by Monday. Parents will have to stay home with their kids. We have to be ready.
As of one hour ago, we now have several confirmed positive tests, and the school closings are coming in waves. I doubt a single school or daycare will be open on Monday. Of course, our outside IT vendor is swamped and its very hard to get questions answered re: WFH tech. Luckily, we have some smart millenials on staff who already know what we need to do.
Mix it with aloe Vera gel?Anyone know if it is effective to have a bowl of rubbing alcohol that you can repeatedly dip your hands in? Will the alcohol remain sterile? Will your hands be ok?
Good way to make your hands turn red and crack.Anyone know if it is effective to have a bowl of rubbing alcohol that you can repeatedly dip your hands in? Will the alcohol remain sterile? Will your hands be ok?
Success!!, I got my Fruit Loops. I stopped at the liquor store and got a couple cases of beer. There is a Kum and Go next door so I got a half dozen of the little bowl ones. My life is complete and I plan to not leave the bunker all weekend.I shared a backyard fence from birth through middle school with a kid who grew up to manage the local Albertson's. He told me to come in at 6am when they open. The place is quiet stocked and as sanitary as it will be until the next 6am.
Baby Cora! Congrats!!On a positive note, my wife gave birth to our first child this morning!!
They certainly are to blame for the global outbreak.Did they contain it?
I could have sworn I just heard we have declared a national emergency here in the USA. Isn't Italy on lockdown?
Contained indeed.
Also known as the non wisdom of the masses. My favorites on social media today:
Facebook neighborhood page - mom declares that anyone who sends their kids back to school after spring break is negligent and should be reported to CPS.
Nextdoor - dude writes a thesis on the dangers of accepting UPS/Fedex/Amazon packages because the virus can survive on cardboard for days.
The tragic comedy epic marches on.
Actually no. In China when someone tested positive, they were quarantined away from their family. Please explain the self evident explanation.. noone has been able to do so yet.
I am also 100% in the dark about "talking points".. i will not watch tv or bother with news sites right now. All just different angles of scare tactics.
Positive test, negative test - THE SAME THING happens right?
I'm waiting for medical insights from Billy Joe Tolliver and his esteemed colleague, Billy Joe Hobert. He didn’t go there - he wasn’t ghoulish, just woefully uninformed. Or faking it for ratings.
The previous day, former Saints QB and armchair virologist Bobby Hebert was keeping Garic in check. When you make Hebert sound like Sanjay Gupta, you’ve got problems.

In 10-12 days we see rolling peaks across the regions of our country. After this, "new cases" will go down. Good news... or just how it works. They certainly are to blame for the global outbreak.
But a couple of days ago, they had something like only 25 new cases. That's REALLY good news compared to hundreds or even thousands of new cases overnight. How'd they do it? Testing everyone, proactively not reactively. Seeking the infected rather than waiting for the sick to come to them. Then isolating the sick, not home isolation like we are suggesting where they end infecting their family.
Will it work? I friggin hope so.
Already developed in South Korea. Several US states have already been doing drive-they testing in limited numbers. The states just needed the stateside manufacture of working tests ramped way up.Didn’t they say these tests typically take 6 months to develop, although I assume they have all hands on deck to provide soon(er)?
My ex BiL, his sister and two brothers, all of their children (in Naples) have not responded to his (bil's) daughters on the phone or social media in over a week. My niece losing her mind over this.Well, one of my cousins in Italy has it. She's a nurse.
Apparently troops outside in the streets. You can't go out without a certificate (one per family) or you get fined. Masks and gloves to go shopping, wait outside until it's your turn. Weddings getting cancelled.
Oof.
People keep using China like it is an example of success.. like the virus hasn't run a lap around the globe since.Actually no. In China when someone tested positive, they were quarantined away from their family.
1) Testing would have been very useful for stopping the spread early on. Isolating the people who test positive is the only way to get containment, and you're right - that ship has sailed. Please explain the self evident explanation.. noone has been able to do so yet.

China (excluding Hubei province) has been a success.People keep using China like it is an example of success.. like the virus hasn't run a lap around the globe since.
I regret that I have but oneOn a positive note, my wife gave birth to our first child this morning!! We were expecting our daughter to be born in the first week of April, which does not align very well if this hospital sees a massive inflow of patients over the next month. This is the last place I would want to be at that time. I was really dreading the timing of all of this but alas, my lil one made it easier for us and her. This hospital used to be extremely lenient with visitors but yesterday they just limited visitors to just one person per patient. Today, they are implementing mandatory face masks for everyone walking around the hospital. Very happy with both of those decisions.
To add a lil more drama, my wife is a Nurse Practitioner in this very hospital. They already have at least three confirmed corona virus patients here. Last thing I want is for my wife to be this close to the potential chaos that could be. Now, she will enjoy her 4 moth maternity in isolation enjoying her new found motherhood. This baby is a god send.
So is Bakersfied. First case in my county, but I am far removed.Idaho is on the map :(
Thanks K4, scary times but still a beautiful day.I regret that I have but oneto give for this post.
1) Correct, as a proactive measure - would have been nice.1) Testing would have been very useful for stopping the spread early on. Isolating the people who test positive is the only way to get containment, and you're right - that ship has sailed.
2) Testing is still useful for avoiding full community spread. This stuff isn't everywhere yet. There's cases in a lot of places, and it's a good idea for you to act as though everyone has it because you don't know. But it's useful for hospitals, businesses, schools, etc. to know if they have been exposed to it because they can take additional measures to sanitize or close off areas that are likely to be contaminated and send people home who might be sick. There aren't unlimited resources for deep cleaning, and a lot of people are still relying on grocery stores, restaurants, etc
3) it's helpful for statistical analysis because it gives us an idea about trends. If the number of cases in an area appears to be going down (even if the numbers aren't exact, we can do statistically significant sampling) then we can make decisions based on that trend.
4) testing is absolutely necessary for treatment and measuring results. For people who have genetic flu like symptoms, you're right - stay home, avoid contact with people, follow doctor's orders. But doctor's orders will change as they see what works for this virus and that may change over time. If we treat everyone as though they had the flu then we'd have bad data.
5) testing is especially important for the individual who gets tested. Not just to get the right treatment plan, but also knowing whether you've had it before. Early anecdotal evidence assists that reinfection was rare but much more dangerous. That may not be true. Early on they suggested that there's a second strain of this that's active right now. They may not be identical. So having it might mean you'll be immune to it. Or it might mean you're at greater risk if you get reinfected. It's clearly better to know that for as many cases as possible even if it's not actionable.
6) there are currently vaccines and treatments under development. Vaccines can only be developed of there's s reliable test to see if they work. Treatments can only be developed if there's a baseline of test results for people who did and did not receive the treatment.

Got this one toodanlambskin,
You’ve likely heard by now that, due to heightened concerns around coronavirus (COVID-19), most sports leagues have been suspended. I wanted to reach out to share with you everything we know about how the current situation will impact FanDuel users for the foreseeable future.
First and foremost, our thoughts are with those immediately impacted by this outbreak. FanDuel believes that sports offer fans an important outlet in both good times and bad, and to that end we look forward to everyone’s favorite leagues returning whenever it is safe for them to do so. In the meantime, however, we remain as committed as ever to giving our fans more ways to win. More on that below, but first I want to address how these recent developments will be impacting FanDuel’s core offerings.
FanDuel Fantasy
Our FanDuel Fantasy app will remain live and you’ll have full access to your FanDuel account. Moving forward, our policy is that, if the sport is being played (and if it’s usually available on FanDuel), then we’ll offer a fantasy contest. In circumstances where a future contest cannot run due to a league-wide suspension of games, we will always return your entry fee. Additionally, we’re currently working to develop new free-to-play games which we hope will be a fun diversion during this uncertain time. We’ll share more on those as soon as we can.
FanDuel Sportsbook
Our policy towards sports betting will match our approach to fantasy contests as closely as possible. If FanDuel Sportsbook is currently available in your state, then our app and your account will be 100% accessible during this period. Any bets you’ve already placed on games that have been postponed or cancelled will be voided and refunded. For longer term future bets where the situation is not currently known, we will continue to make decisions on a rolling basis as those markets are impacted. We will follow up on these as more information becomes available.
What's Available?
As I said above, we take seriously our mission to give fans more ways to win. While most sports are currently suspended, our sister app, TVG, is currently available in your state and will continue to offer betting on horse racing as long as races are still being run. Find the TVG app in the iOS app store or click here to get access on Android.
Our main priority during this period is to do what is right by our fans at every opportunity. While there may be a bit of uncertainty as we allow various situations to develop, we’re committed to keeping you informed of any developments as quickly as possible. Our customer support team remains available through all of our usual channels. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact them here.
Best wishes,
Matt King
CEO, FanDuel
Showing reality in other countries is not a scare tactic nor an angle.
The way they were talking about it (with the flowchart or whatever) made it seem like this was something that would be available immediately. The Google communication is much more reserved, and doesn't even guarantee that it will expand outside of the Bay Area.Google Communcations @Google_Comms
Statement from Verily: "We are developing a tool to help triage individuals for Covid-19 testing. Verily is in the early stages of development, and planning to roll testing out in the Bay Area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time.
Fever is the big tell to help exclude non-infectious stuff, like allergies. Not all infections will show fever at the same time, nor will everyone mount the same febrile response, but ~85-90% of symptomatic C-19 have it, and roughly the same for flu.@comfortably numb
Looks like no one really hooked you up here -- check out the chart at this link. Allergies aren't specifically shown, but are very similar to the items in the 'Cold' columns minus sore throat and aches/pains.
I find it hard to believe that any reasonably intelligent human can view reports/stories from other nations as "scare tactics"Showing reality in other countries is not a scare tactic nor an angle.
It seems likely that Verily (the Alphabet subsidiary developing the triage website) had no idea Trump was going to announce this thing in front of the nation. This was a centerpiece of his press conference today, and one of the first things he touted.Google is not working with the US government in building a nationwide website to help people determine whether and how to get a novel coronavirus test, despite what President Donald Trump said in the course of issuing an emergency declaration for the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, a much smaller trial website made by another division of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is going up. It will only be able to direct people to testing facilities in the Bay Area.
...
Carolyn Wang, communications lead for Verily, told The Verge that the “triage website” was initially only going to be made available to health care workers instead of the general public. Now that it has been announced the way it was, however, anybody will be able to visit it, she said. But the tool will only be able to direct people to “pilot sites” for testing in the Bay Area, though Wang says Verily hopes to expand it beyond California “over time.”
The triage site should be put live within a few days, and it will be hosted at Project Baseline, the Verily website where people can sign up to take part in clinical trials. That’s a seemingly odd place for the triage tool to live, but Wang says that Project Baseline already has certain necessary tools like an informed consent agreement, so it makes sense to put it there.
As for the 1,700 Google engineers Trump referenced in the press conference, that appears to be related to a call for volunteers Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai put out in a company-wide memo earlier this week.
In all, the difference between the reality of what is being built and what was promised during the press conference is very large.
I think the reason for Alabama still being clear has to be a lack of people who can read the test.Idaho is on the map :(
Seems like a terrible idea for drive through testingWe need to be able to pee on a stick. Can we have simple tests like that?
Wow. Congratulations on making a post that is xenophobic, hate-driven and completely wrong all at the same time.No one should use China as an example for anything. They are the enemy, they started it, they cannot be trusted to tell the truth.
testing is up and improved from abysmal to really needs a lot of work

And an example of going WAY too far the other way.No one should use China as an example for anything. They are the enemy, they started it, they cannot be trusted to tell the truth.
Not sure how you know/think that, but, he should. Testing a million people would drive the mortality rate into the ground.RedmondLonghorn said:Trump doesn’t want easily available testing because bad numbers would reflect poorly on him. That’s obvious at this point.
TLDR - overreaction in full stride.testing is up and improved from abysmal to really needs a lot of work
