Keep the faith.

My wife’s friend from work just got admitted to the hospital and is getting worse by the day. A woman in her 20’s with two little kids. No health issues. She sits 50 feet from my wife.

MEANWHILE, there is a block party going on today a few doors down from my house. The whole neighborhood is there. People having a grand old time. Tons of kids. Adults bringing over food. The music is so loud, I can’t even hear my TV. I’d call the cops, but someone from the police force is co-sponsoring the party. I am beyond angry.
Just curious.  Where?

W-T-F???

My county has 100 "reported" cases.  Just drove to store.

Car wash: full

Oil Change place: full

Grocery stores: obviously full

Traffic: 75% of a typical Saturday

Chick-Fil-A: full

I mean, I know quarantines are happening, but not here.
i’m out on the carolina coast.  nc under a day mandated 30 day lockdown, with public access closed, yet the beach is packed, people on top of one another, large groups together.  this is topsail beach.  also, lots of ny license plates around.  ugh

This has no relevance to anyone in this thread but me, but I just learned that a guy on our street has the virus.  And that the family was letting their kids play with other kids in our neighborhood park until Wednesday of this week.  And, most relevant to me specifically, one week ago the post office accidentally delivered my Amazon package to them, and the wife brought my misdelivered package over and left it on my porch.
Wash your hands and be on the lookout for symptoms is the best advice I think. Good Luck and hang in there!!

Yup. It certainly can be done. We lived through hell for almost 2 years in Iran. No internet, facetime, amazon, food deliveries, home school, netflix or even tv unless you enjoy watching the mullahs. This is nothing. And 0 compensation for losing your job or business. People crying about how tough this is anger me. This is a war, I'd say WWIII. The only way my mom, myself and bro got out on a flight was through underground contacts my aunt had. But they held my dad because he's an engineer. For 3 mo we thought we'll never see dad again. It was beyond awful. And we were/are all US citizens but the government still considered my parents Iranian.

All I can say is this could be a whole lot worse. Count your blessings it isn't. But as far as the virus is concerned, we have a long way to go and we need to each do our part to not get others infected.
Thank you for this perspective.

The 3blue1brown video I posted about modeling an epidemic looked at a few interesting scenarios. One of them was.. what happens if most people isolate but a small percentage basically go about business as usual. The result was, well, intuitive but depressing.

How close would they be coming to you?

I'm one to be a little bit cavalier with the transmission risk (a very little bit). Like, I don't think people walking around nearby is a special risk so long as no one is hacking and sneezing everywhere, or being gross about lack of handwashing, or things like that.

So, if people are brushing the back of your chair all day on their way to the kitchen ... then, yeah, move. But if people are passing and staying several feet away from you, no problem.

However, really I would just advise to trust your gut. If you feel better moving, then by all means move. Sounds like floorspace availability is not a problem.
See, I can be a bit OCD, but I completely struggle with how this thing is transmitted.  Like I honestly wonder if you just "pass through the air"  of someone that had it (asymptomatic) and simply exhaled...is there a way to get it that way?

I dont think  those are many of those locales but I could be wrong

Reading these last few pages, I think I’m just going to be inside this house until August.

Just from this page of one thread on one message board.

Holy crap! Not that far from the NY epicenter.

Stay strong
Unlike a lot of other places, the virus is already here. They have already converted multiple schools within 10 miles into emergency hospitals to accommodate 1,000+ people. We are overflow for Boston (an hour away). The governor has already closed down most places until at least 5/4. There have been daily warnings and communication just how serious it is. They have blocked parking lots for parks and playgrounds. So people are mad they can’t take their kids anywhere. All people have to do is stay at home, and they can’t do it.

Ran “essential” errands this morning.  PDX seems like it was definitely a 50% reduction in normal Saturday traffic.  Store was mostly stocked, got everything I needed. Coffee place has turned their front door into a walk up window with dots keeping people six feet apart.  Needed cat litter, I was the only one in the pet supplies store.

The one thing I’m doing right now is acting mobile tap/touch payment on my phone.  Some places have signs up encouraging and recommending it. Almost no places taking cash.

This:lmao:    Mr. krista really likes them, and I thought they'd be a great treat for him while quarantined.

We have been taking deliveries directly into the garage, disposing of the outside box into the recycling bin, wiping down the inside contents, and then hand-washing/sanitizing before touching anything else or coming back in the house.  I'd wondered if that was overkill, but now I'm glad we've done it.  Hopefully that will take care of any issue here.
That’s pretty much what I’m doing - bringing deliveries into the garage, putting what has to be refrigerated or frozen away, but leaving all dry goods in the garage for a few days before bringing them in, and then washing up thoroughly when I come back in the house.

Not perfect, as I’m not disinfecting every single item, but I figure at least I’m keeping this stuff out of the house and off the counters for a few days.

Both Imperfect Produce and Butcher Box have stopped taking new customers within the past few days.

You need to shut down every nook and cranny. Youngsters are finding a way to gather, and that's in SF. Let alone other lesser known places.

Going by TJ's quote to me above, such a quarantine in the U.S. simply can't be based on voluntary action.

The enforcement actions necessary to force north of 99% compliance ... I just don't think America, collectively, has an appetite for that. And in today's "take a video!" world ... you'd have hundreds of videos on the Internet that would make Kent State look like Disneyland.

There's just no easy answer. America would have to shrug off something essential to its identity to truly enforce a 99+% quarantine among the population.
I think everything you said is true.

I don't think it's possible we have an enforced national quarantine, e.g. by the National Guard.  It would be logistically challenging to enforce due to the number of essential people allowed out (an entire discussion unto itself - but there really are a lot of essential jobs/people).  Second, it would bring out the crazy in the country thinking it was a government take down on their freedoms.  I honestly think the fall out from that would be so intense and widespread as to be damaging to our national unity.

But... a National Stay at Home order would have some benefits.

It would cause some additional number of people to start isolating themselves to some degree - any improvement in isolation numbers helps in the delaying battle against C19.

It would seemingly force federal government messaging to become less political and more science based in order to support the reasoning behind a National Stay at Home order.  More serious, more specific messaging from the federal government would help with increasing isolation numbers.

It would also increase public awareness and change public acceptance of people that don't practice physical distancing.  It's a very slippery slope to want to see the general public start criticizing and self policing "bad" pandemic time behavior, but given what we're still seeing in this country, we need to do what we can to make sure people at least know they shouldn't be gathering in groups and doing things that constitute  risky behavior in regards to public health.  Many will still choose to do those things, but with a National Stay at Home order in place, at least they will be more likely to be aware that what they are doing is bad for the greater good and is no longer considered acceptable behavior.

I'd be tempted to go scream at them

Wow, that's the longest "until" date I've seen yet - that's encouraging they set a date that's farther out than mid April or some such.

I can't tell exactly by that link if the FDA is saying ibuprofen is fine to take or not. It looks they're saying ibuprofen won't make coronavirus worse if you catch it, but could interfere with the accuracy of diagnostic testing.

Thinking on it some more, though ... I can see ibuprofen lowering inflammation and perhaps also antibody counts in the blood. I can't see it making it more difficult to pick up viruses after a nasal swab. @Terminalxylem? @Tecumseh? @ProstheticRGK? @ghostguy123? Beuller?
From what I see, there was a study from China that showed a link between circulating levels of ACE2 enzyme and increased seriousness in progression of COVID-19 disease. It was a strong enough study that it was published in The Lancet. (Linked in the FDA blurb). FDA guideline is non-commital- they aren't weighing in officially. Until there is time to do more/better studies, there won't be official guidelines.

Me, personally, I stopped using ibuprofen and other NSAIDS and go with strictly tylenol (acetaminophen) now, for nagging pain. For me, there is enough of a link between circulating ACE2 enzyme and an increase in ACE2 receptors in the lower respiratory tract, which is hypothesized to be a route of entry for corona viruses. LSU Study.

it's just an educated guess and a risk/reward analysis, though. Admittedly, I don't understand the pathophysiology of NSAIDS blocking the inflammation cascade or creation of new ACE2 receptors in the lungs any better than you would if you spent 30 minutes with google.

That message is almost harmful in that it can be interpreted by younger people as a pass to go out.  I don’t get it.
Yep. But then the USA seems to the the only country in the world that is handling this from a state level, rather than a national one.  So when you have 50 different solutions to a problem, you’re bound to get all sorts of solutions ranging from terrible to great.

Several ways, but not to my knowledge the way you describe.

Most commonly touching something that has the virus and then touching your face. The virus can be on surfaces from coughing or infected people having the virus on their hands and touching something. I have taken to carrying around a stack of napkins in my pocket and using them to open doors and push buttons. I still wash my hands and hand sanitize like I used my bare hands.

Breathing in the virus from someone who has coughed around you. These particles are supposed to land in a few minutes.

The scariest thing is the hospitals, when a COVID patient is given CPR or intubated the particles released are smaller than the coughing particles and can hang in the air for hours. They can be circulated into other rooms. Opening and closing doors, people walking by and the heating/cooling systems all aid the travel of the smaller particles.

Sadly, the party is only getting bigger. People are out walking and end up checking in to see what all the hubbub is all about and then end up staying. Like a moth to a flame. It’s multiple houses on the closest side street. Free Bird currently playing at max volume.
