Needs its own thread - the fundamentals of our economy are about to change.  First and foremost, universal health care will become the norm.  What good is it to be rich if your servant is infecting you?

Tons o' under-developed thoughts on technology and transportation.

No I did not mean to sound too cavalier. Sorry about that.

Just trying to say im not staying in my home 24/7. Heck schools are still opened here.
I took it the same way moops did.

we are fortunate to live in a great neighborhood with nice walks and parks. So we’ve been walking for an hour in the morning and then evening each day. Helping so far. Wish the pool would warm up.

@bobwojnowski
Uncertain times require drastic measures. I find myself doing things I never, ever do. Today, I am planning to go for a walk. How does this work? Do you just walk to a random place and then turn around and walk back? Please advise.
I prefer a circle.  Just walking to a point makes it too easy to cheat and turn around early

Went to the nursery, lowes, and chikfila today. I did notice less people out there. Chikfila got rid of the trays and all of the condiments. If you want a condiment they will bring it to you. I thought it was strange that they still had the plastic utensils out for people to rummage through. I do believe I am home now until work on Monday.

One thing I haven't really talked about anywhere is the tourist-watching I did yesterday afternoon.

I have to drive through the French Quarter in New Orleans twice a day as part of my routine, almost always at slow speed. It's easy to watch the tourists and the tourist-serving locals to get a finger on the pulse of the city. Or at least that part of the city.

With all the public St. Patrick's celebrations cancelled, there was still a dune-buggy group all decked out in green and gumming up the streets. Saw some random tourist in a convertible dancing in the front seat while he was driving. A wedding party taking pictures in Jackson Square. Saw way too many people walking around, staying in crowds, doing all the normal stuff they'd be in town doing on a normal Friday afternoon.

I simultaneously was (a) angry at these tourists for being here and for being unaware or uncaring for what was going on in the world around them and (b) ashamed internally for feeling that way.

My contractor came over today to take some measurements. He's in his early 60s. I shook his hand (he extended) and I immediately gave him hand sanitizer.

After a week of beautiful, sunny, 60 degree days I worked through, this weekend is snowy and 25.  I'd be fine if I could be out cleaning the garage and taking walks with the fam.  Instead we're stuck inside watching chicks beat each other up and chatting about - wait for it - .........coronavirus.

Really counting our blessings after getting a pool built with a 28 mo and 4 mo old...water temp was 84 today and I completely exhausted the 2 yr old all day at home by ourselves. He’ll be swimming like Phelps by summer.

All we got was a special dispensation that Mass was not required.

Still, even holding mass is a risky proposition, given the age of many parishioners.
Same with the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Dispensation through and including Easter Sunday April 12th.

That’s awesome. My boy is a great swimmer (we had him in classes all last year) but I’m too cheap to add a heater. I figure in about 10 days it’ll be warm enough but maybe this will cause me to shoot the lock off my wallet.

We're getting into the 80s consistently starting today (think it hit 81 yesterday, too).

The pool will still be cold in the mornings, but will probably be usable by mid-afternoon.
This will be the only time in the history of my life I applaud the incoming heat and humidity.

At least two major Dioceses have cancelled Catholic Masses - Boston and New York.

That is a really big deal - and probably had to get approval from The Vatican.
Our church left it up to each location. Copenhagen, Munich & Oslo called it off on Wednesday. We decided to do online services for the East Coast (Boston, CT, NJ & NYC.) Ditto for L.A. London is holding services tomorrow, as is Australia.

I served at The Father’s Heart today but we did a modified soup kitchen with more precautions. They’re also a church & not having services tomorrow - I think that’s true of 95-99% of churches around the city.

I washed hands, brought hand sanitizer with me, and took all necessary precautions. There were no grandparents playing basketball.

Im avoiding large crowds but I refuse to stay holed up on my house.
Right but if your kid has the virus and his friend didn’t, maybe now friend does. The friend can pass it to his parents who might pass it their parents, coworkers who then pass to their family and so on. This week is the most important time to distance ourselves because right now a ton of people have it and don’t know it so they are spreading it workout a clue.

Lots of stupid going on Italy it seems: They cited irresponsible behaviour by many citizens, who despite the earlier warnings not to gather in large numbers, headed to beaches or ski resorts, and hung out together in town squares, especially after the closure of schools.

We probably have a dumber population so I can't see this slowing here either.

His dad was there to.

I would get a vasectomy and then have it reversed if it meant I could make beautiful blond hair brown Zumba lawyer fictional babies with Kim Wexler.

The group that will have the biggest impact on how bad this gets is the low- risk population. They are much larger and a change in their behavior will have a much greater impact than if just the high risk population adjusts.

Its not the price of the heater, its the ongoing utility increase

Same. Right this second ... I still believe it will have a positive mitigating effect, even without firm evidence.

[icon] earlier posted a Chinese data crunch that showed heat & humidity only helped a little. But so many of their cities have terrible air quality and year-round smog ... they won't get the UV levels we will.

I live in South Florida. Wife and I have been enjoying the 90 degree heat and sunshine from the comfort of our backyard. If anything positive comes out of this it will be I’ll have one hell of a tan.

My experience may be a lot different than yours given I live in a very republican heavy area, and there's a lot of people here who continue to regurgitate what Trump was saying weeks ago about it, and don't seem to realize even he has changed his tune this past week. They also don't even seem to know what Italy is, let alone what is going on there. Europe is just a place full of foreigners. And "you know about dem forners, right?"
if you are going to slam certain people & claim they do not "know what Italy is" please take it to the political forum.  This air of superior drivel is not conducive to anything.  IMO

I thank you.
