Are you going to self quarantine for 14 days?
Already kind of have been as our office is now closed but as fate would have it, I’m moving.  I had to run go get boxes and I ran in to an empty Walgreens to grab some more Mucinex.  I’m also doing a lot of cleaning and been using bleach - I have no clue if it’s allergies, dust, reaction to the bleach or whatever.  I’ll be trying to stay indoors as much as possible for sure.

One thing to consider, I saw a video with a panel of doctors answering questions last night. People with Pneumonia that do not require oxygen are put into the "mild" category.
It's common for people in this condition to self-care at home. We've all heard of folks who were "home two weeks with pneumonia". Perhaps some of us have been that person themselves ( @culdeus recently?).

Random thought

I am all for strategically infecting masses of people who agree to quarantines.  Say people ages 18-50.

2-3 weeks quarantine, government paid.  Hell use the cruise ships for it.  And stadiums.

Honestly, I think that would go a long way in helping the bigger picture, and in a matter of 2 months would could probably have half the damn country no longer at risk which means no longer contagious.
I've considered something similar before.  While quarantined, these people should be getting training on how to help care for COVID-19 patients.  Then when they emerge from quarantine they can assist medical teams.

Not as long as you'd think. Few weeks, maybe more. We already had a 24 pack in the house before all this, I grabbed another middle of last week before the run began. Wife got a 12 pack the same day without knowing I'd already stocked up. So now we have about 60 rolls, but we definitely weren't hoarding. The shelves were still full when we bought it.

In our case, it wasn't panic buying. I wanted to have enough food, bottled water, medicines, and other essentials (like TP) to self-quarantine us for 3-5 weeks if necessary. We do now, and won't be buying anything else for about a month.
Yeah.  None of that sounds like hoarding or panic buying.

I get it though.  It’s tough to know what tomorrow brings.  Or next week.

Help me understand this - all I’ve been reading is there’s really nothing you can do if you get it - just hydrate, take OTC drugs and rest.  Outside of a ventilator what is a person going to do to help?  This is a genuine question - I’d like to know so if my family gets it maybe I will be more prepared.

We are staying home. our church is having services. I advised them to at least not pass the offering buckets. I think our “sanctuary” holds 300, maybe 500 I can’t recall exactly. Last week it was half full. I expect today would be even less. I wanted to go just to see how many and if they took my bucket suggestion. Mr clown said no.
I stayed home from Mass this morning. The Catholic schools are shutting down this week but entire families next to each other for an hour are okay? They did away with communion chalice (which i never take anyway because it skeeves me), Holy Water fonts, shaking hands during Sign of Peace.

My wife's Presbyterian church had a service on Facebook Live with just the ministers and canceled in person servuces.

Bring food and medical supplies to people being quarantined, provide childcare for medical staff that can't watch their kids, help to do tasks that nurses might otherwise do that require little training so nurses can focus on the crush of patients.    A lot of people are going to need a lot of help over the next few months.

I get why they say a possible end date to the closures, but it is kind of ridiculous. No chance this #### is sorted out by March 27th
Slooooooooooowing the spread at a critical junction.

And you’re correct, this will go longer than that.  But I imagine a week and a half announcement is more tolerable to start than a month for residents of our state.

Hit up Wegman’s this morning pre-8AM to beat the rush.  We have most of the things we’ll need (I think) so this is more surgical buying and backfilling.  Wasn’t too busy yet but the store looked very picked over.  My cashier looked absolutely exhausted.
Same experience at about the same time this morning at the neighborhood chain grocery. Hopeful that the supply chains can absorb this initial local rush of grocery shopping and recover to a return to near-normal within, I dunno, two weeks maybe. Maybe quicker.

Quick chat with the manager -- she said that while things can change on the fly, there were no plans as of yet to limit store hours. I have heard rumors of local WalMarts limiting hours ... and some local residents were thinking that if WalMarts are doing it, other retailer will follow. We'll see.

Yeah I dont get the 2 week dates.

My son was confused by his school closing until the 6th.  They still have a couple days for "training" of using the online stuff, and they had 1 week spring break coming up anyway.  Seems like they are gearing up for online the rest of the year, but not telling the kids to mentally prepare for that option.

Got it - I wasn’t thinking along those lines - since you said training I assumed there would be something more skilled involved - my mistake.

I didn't think this was worthy of it's own thread, and didn't know where else to put it.  I would think eSports could use this opportunity to gain popularity and fill our need for sports (gambling).  I don't know a lot about eSports, but I think the big events are played by a bunch of people in convention centers all on their own PC.  Does it have to be that way?  Can't they all be playing online?

The closures will extend like we extend the national debt. We will get close to Mar. 27 and extend to April, then May...

I bet latency and connection issues are still an issue for competitive gaming online.

The 27th starts spring break, so add 10 days for that, but those were planned closures, so there won't be coverage for healthcare workers, etc.

The message I'm receiving is that this date range is for schools to get set up for the next phase (online classes, distribution of materials to those with no wifi, etc).

That's right, forgot that spring break starts on the 27th. I just cancelled flights to Vegas so we could explore Death Valley and Sequoia with the kids, so not sure how I didn't piece that together.

To those who are still minimizing this. Wake County NC here.  14 of our state's 32 confirmed cases are in our county.  Damn elementary school teacher at our town's only elementary school was in class teaching while she was already symptomatic.  She was finally confirmed 2 days after teaching. We're expecting the numbers to explode here in the next few days.  #######g Idiots.

Yeah. I mean two nights ago had a fever sweat break, yesterday took zero cold meds and feel no need to today. Absolutely 100% at this point.

Kudos to our local grocery chain. Changed their hours from 6-11 to 8 to 8 to give them more time to restock shelves overnight. Put limits on everything from soap to TP to eggs and milk. We showed up at 7:45 and the line was around the building already. We heard a lady come out and say there would be no milk, chicken or eggs. So we bolted to WalMart and were able to get eggs and milk (already had meats). Came back to the local grocery store after dropping the WalMart stuff at home and was able to get soap, hand wipes and TP. They are doing well in overcoming irrational panic to distribute what they have smartly. Oh, they also had security on hand in case. I think the longer this goes on, the better these grocers will learn to deal with it.

Local news article saying the one week extended school closure is completely ineffective and should be 8 weeks minimum. Of course they have no mention of what working adults are supposed to do with their kids during that 8 weeks.

I can see the logic of sending kids to school.  The extra risk to them is nominal.  I just don't know how you deal with teachers in high risk groups.

What a problem with no good solution.

Glad to hear culd.  Probably worth taking it easy for a bit longer in any event.  And at some point finding out if you were infected.

No wonder Cooper closed the schools, yikes.

People are questioning why we are cancelling massive crowd events for covid-19 but not cancelling massive crowd events for the flu. Massive crowd events are the context of the discussion.
You said that a person with the flu infects 1.3 other people, and a person with Covid19 infects 10+ other people, when the true rate of spread is 2.2 or so from Covid19. That has nothing to do with sporting events. That’s just misleading and false.

It’s that kind of skewing of the real facts that puts people into more of a panic.

So please.. Please... PLEASE stop posting misleading statistics in a thread where we are trying to have a reasonable conversation.

I spent a good portion of the 90’s in Findlay, OH, just up the road from Bluffton. Have driven through their on any trip that takes you south of Findlay. I think this is an excellent example of what to expect and illustrates the need to act now to attempt to get ahead of this. It is going to take decisive, quick action at the village & town level for us to get through this. You may look at OH as overreacting but as the video shows, inaction is going to have far reaching, devastating effects on our health care system.
