My wife is blistering hot at 70 degrees ... and freezing cold at 69.9 degrees. The thermostat ain't happy.Wife and I doing well spending all this extra time together... except for the fact that she thinks having the furnace at 67 degrees is like a sauna and I'm shivering...![]()
One analyst, but you can check out his bio on Twitter. Not some rando. Will be a massive hit. Fed's already done what it can by cutting rates to zero. Will need substantial safety net spending ASAP to help offset this.Robert Stein @BobStein_FT
Best guess now for real GDP growth in 2020:
Q1 +1.5%
Q2 -10.0% (not a typo)
Q3 +4.5%
Q4 +5.0%
They know I’m on a discussion forum. But they don’t know the name of it and they certainly had no idea who Joe Bryant was.You spend more time here than any other member of these forums. With all due respect how could your wife or family not know what this website is? What do they think you are always typing about?
If I am on for 10 minutes anywhere my wife is asking..what site are you on?
Just to clarify, I'm actually talking about running, not biking. So nothing to impound except me, which I would probably not welcome.Very doubtful it would come to this in America, but:
In a martial-law situation ... what would you do if you were caught and your bike was summarily impounded? @IvanKaramazov
Bike-riding outdoors seems like a pretty safe endeavor to me -- you're likely not right up near someone while doing it, and you're in the fresh air and sunshine (usually). Just never know when the sands will shift enforcement-wise.
Not a beef:
This. I can accept my civil liberties being restricted when it's for the common good. But absolutely not when it's not.Seriously though, literally banning people from being outside would be a stupid overreaction for huge swaths of the country. I can understand if we're talking about Manhattan, but many of us live in places with very low population density. Me going out for a run puts nobody at any risk of anything.
Thanks Joe. This thread has been very important to myself and my family.Do not do this.
One last warning - we are not going to turn on each other here.
If we can't keep from doing that, people won't be allowed to post here.
I hate that as I truly want us to all be together on this. But if a few people are ruining it for everyone else, we'll be forced to limit who can post.
I need my floors redone. Last week I was planning on getting quotes on my kitchen and family room. I don't want strangers in my house now.How many of you have curtailed spending now??
I hate to be "that guy" but.....
We have estimates coming in to extend and screen in our front porch for this spring.. Cost is anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000.
But with all the uncertainty with how this is going to shake out we've decided to hold off on large purchases.
I want to think since I am in IT and our company sells applications and other items for businesses we should be ok.. But so much is unknown right now I can't justify spending that much on something that is not essential.
Which brings me back to my original question as I fear many are thinking the same thing... less buying leads to less money in the economy which leads to less buying, etc..![]()
That said, the US number is indeed growing quite rapidly day by day. IIRC four or five days ago it was about 1000 cases, now almost 4000 (at worldometers)In the past 24 hours, % of case increases:
Pakistan 157%
Chile 107%
Columbia 59%
Sri Lanka 56%
Russia 48%
Portugal 35%
Malaysia 32%
Thailand 29%
Austrailia 25%
Netherlands 25%
Mexico 23%
USA 4%
Anyone using USA stats are using bogus numbers. The tests aren't available.
You didn't even mention China buying up stocks at dirt-cheap pricesI need my floors redone. Last week I was planning on getting quotes on my kitchen and family room. I don't want strangers in my house now.
Two days ago I started thinking that the next 3 weeks would be perfect time to redo the two full bathrooms. New tile floors, vanities, sinks, etc. But now I don't think the stores are going to be open and not sure I should be out doing non-essential shopping.
Not to mention all of the planned trips/outings/games/concerts/dinners/movies that we would typically be doing.
This economy is screwed.
Last I heard, this thing is almost definitely droplet only rather than airborne. Even from my bunker, I can agree that you going for a run isn’t risky for anyone.Just to clarify, I'm actually talking about running, not biking. So nothing to impound except me, which I would probably not welcome.

Edit: One way to think about it is that instead of being alone inside, I'm just alone outside instead. I'm taking my aloneness with me when I go out.
Sure, in a world which no one has a clue how viruses are spread and take zero actions such numbers are possible. Ebola could have killed millions too according to early predictions, but we are a little be smarter than that and took appropriate responses. We will not be anywhere close to the magnitude suggested by worst-case scenarios and it only serves are fear-mongering to suggest that.you are way off. worst case, this kills 11+M Americans (assume population = 330M, 70% infection rate, and 5% fatality rate from those infected). That would dwarf the #1 cause of death: heart disease, at 647k.
I agree with you. There are loads of safe ways to maintain social distance outdoors.Seriously though, literally banning people from being outside would be a stupid overreaction for huge swaths of the country. So of those that are through this thing (recovered or not), 7.7% have died. Regardless of high risk or not, no idea how you could be happy about those odds for the outcome from contracting a virus.Numbers Update
I know this is a time of great panic, and I don't want to minimize anyone's suffering if they've experienced a loss due to this virus. But I want to take a second to point out a positive
Total number of confirmed global cases = 170,150
Total number of confirmed global deaths = 6,513
Total number of confirmed recoveries = 77,254
On a planet of 7.8 BILLION people, the numbers show that if you are one of the few that contracts it, chances are pretty dang good you'll recover (especially if you're not in a high risk group). The more we find out about it, those numbers could get even better.
It's ok to try and post silver linings right? Or are we in 'We're all doomed' mode forever?
I kid you not in the last two minutes it actually just started snowing here. Nostradamus!!Our two young daughters were pretty pumped at the prospect of no school. Wife and I told them that we were going to have fun, but that they’d still have “school” each day with us as their teachers. This wasn’t going to be all fun and games with no structure or learning.
Well, fifteen minutes into Day 1 and we both just decisively agreed to announced that today has been declared a Snow Day. Home school has been canceled for the day.
God bless parents that home school.
Also, I noticed a few times where the news would report "cases" and this case figure would include those recovered and unfortunately, passed away.Numbers Update

Right... I'm 100% sure my kids will be on their tablets/phones all day today. The same thing is happening in Miami Beach. Early closing and reduced capacity at restaurants. The most touristy part of Ocean Drive is closed to prevent large crowds. Shutting it down completely is a last resort, whose time may come. But there will be tremendous economic consequences to workers and the county tax base which depends on tourist taxes.Mayor of New Orleans is trying half-measures and the honor system to keep bars and restaurants closed. Restaurants asked to close at 9:00 and bars at midnight, all enforced by random police checks. Her hand will be forced soon, though.
Uh... I... mountain bike.Very doubtful it would come to this in America, but:

Was our 16th anniversary last night.I guess just trying to gauge the risk of the virus transferring on food/wrappers/bags/containers that may have touched or "coughed on" by restaurant workers or delivery folks.
I’ve got big plans with my third grader. We ordered a kids learn French kit and she’s going to memorize her multiplication tables from 1-12. She’ll prolly end up watching Frozen 2 500 times. Our two young daughters were pretty pumped at the prospect of no school. Wife and I told them that we were going to have fun, but that they’d still have “school” each day with us as their teachers. This wasn’t going to be all fun and games with no structure or learning.

you literally said worst case, this doesn't sniff top 10. maybe you have a different understanding of "worst case" than I do.Sure, in a world which no one has a clue how viruses are spread and take zero actions such numbers are possible. So how did your wife feel about this? Was our 16th anniversary last night.
I had reservations at a really nice place in town, but while out running around with the girlfriend I asked if she wanted to stay in, she said she really did.
Not happy, but also not in the camp that looks at this thing like an insta-kill if you get it. There's balance to be seen here if you don't want to be a "glass half empty" kind of guy.So if those that are through this thing (recovered or not), 7.7% have died. Regardless of high risk or not, no idea how you could be happy about those odds for the outcome from contracting a virus.
"Oh ya? Joe Bryant from FBG's what are you wearing?"They know I’m on a discussion forum. But they don’t know the name of it and they certainly had no idea who Joe Bryant was.
No doubtyou literally said worst case, this doesn't sniff top 10. maybe you have a different understanding of "worst case" than I do.
I mentioned in another thread that I had just started house hunting before everything went crazy. We are putting in an offer on a house today. I have no idea if this is the right move or not. It's certainly incongruous with my usual appetite for risk. Just keeping finger crossed that fortune will favor the bold here. How many of you have curtailed spending now??

What's this now?Very happy with it thus far. Organic/Grass Fed is what I always choose to eat. Here is what I got in my last box for $149.00
(1) Ribeyes : 2 x 10 oz steaks
(1) Tri-Tip : 1 x 1.5 lbs tri-tip
(1) Sirloin Cap : 1 x 1.5 lbs sirloin cap
(1) Boneless Pork Chops : 4 x 8 oz chops
(1) Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon : 1 x 2 lbs pack
(1) Scallops : 1 lb bag
Plus I got these addons via different offers:
Free Ground Beef For Life of Membership - (2 lbs)
Bacon For Life - 1lb
WINGS FOR LIFE - 3lbs
DRUMSTICKS FOR LIFE - 5lbs
The other thing, so far, is that people are learning to stay home when they're sick and not come to the ER just because they don't feel good.I just hope the good lessons people are learning now translate once this is over.
If people can get in the habit of good hygiene, washing their hands, covering their mouths when sneezing, etc., it could have a positive impact on the number of cases of other illnesses like the flu
My first thought was traffic hadn’t decreased enough...
We won't be doing delivery like this at all ... but why would:So we canceled our reservations and ordered GrubHub from a local Thai place. Requested a "noncontact delivery" so they set it on my front porch. Threw on nitrile gloves and brought it in to the kitchen.
1) wiped exterior bag down with Clorox wipe.
2) Opened bag and wiped down exterior of each container with a wipe.
3) Wiped down the counter and Tossed the gloves and wipes.
I figure the food is cooked hot so it should be okay barring a direct sneeze/cough. Nothing you can do about that. The gloves/wipe down should take care of any handling-contamination.
Overkill? Maybe. But easy/cheap insurance. YMMV![]()
Yeah, Maryland just shut’em all downMuch like events, then schools, then ski resorts, the dominos have started falling for restaurant/bars being shut down at a state level. A few days from now I bet that is the norm.
I'm picturing a Gene Simmons-Shannon Tweed situation (although they got married eventually). So how did your wife feel about this?![]()
We are the opposite. Were getting ready to put in an offer on a home but decided to wait and ride things out. Our lending broker is frustrated and thinks we're crazy, though of course he has a stake in us not delaying and I'm sure he's getting worried about feeling the squeeze.I mentioned in another thread that I had just started house hunting before everything went crazy. I just skipped like 8 pages, so, sorry if this is honda, but Washington did as well.fatguyinalittlecoat said:Yeah, Maryland just shut’em all down
SEATTLE — Gov. Jay Inslee announced he will temporarily shut down restaurants, bars and entertainment and recreational facilities statewide -- such as gyms and movie theaters -- due to the coronavirus. Restaurants will be take-out and delivery only.
The order will last until March 31.
He will also expand the protection to limit the size of large gatherings to just 50 people
