Official Cowboys Offseason Thread. 4th pick overall (2 Viewers)

I keep seeing some of you guys saying things like Zeke is a "win now" guy and now you're confused that this pick is a player for the future.

The best teams draft good football players. We keep drafting good players year in and year out we won't have to "win now". We will consistently be in the hunt year in and year out.

It's a fair comment.  It is hard to stomach a year of no production before starting your career.

Zeke could be OROY in 2016

Jaylon could be DROY in 2017

I talked a few folks off the ledge that night...lol.  I loved the player, didn't like the value.  Sometimes, it just doesn't matter though. Good players are good players.
Would you have traded this years 2nd rd pick for a top 5 pick next year?  Because that is essentially how I view the Jaylon Smith trade.

Sure....but let's not pretend there is no risk. His foot is dropping and he can't currently control it.  I pray the docs are right.

Again, not hating on it. Very hard to get excited about it today though.  At least for me. It's like Christmas morning and being told that instead of getting an ipad this year, next I get a Mac book if I guess a coin flip correct.

I was about to post this. Assuming Smith fully recovers he would easily be a top pick in 2017. Time will tell.

I'm not so sure Smith is a wasted pick. Well, it's too early to decide....so, ....I'll wait to see how it plays out.

Hindsight being 20-20 I would have liked to take Jack, traded back up for Smith, and then taken the DT the patriots took over the DT we took, both from Nebraska.

He tore his ACL and MCL pump the brakes guy.  Surgeon confirmed no nerve damage.  Nerve damage doesnt just show up months later without any reason.
Except the surgeon confirmed that there is nerve damage, but he's confident that it'll recover.

Lots of measurables, not great production, hopefully can be coached up. Was ranked in the 70s by most. Good value pick and for need.
Check his previous year.

OK asked him to two gap last year, and he did.  He is an animal, he was just a team player last year.

House full of guests since Thursday, been tied up but been wanting to chime in...

1.  Zeke.  I came around Wed or Thursday morning on him, fully hoping we'd take him but expecting Ramsey if SD passed on him.  So, I was ecstatic when the pick came in.  Old school RB, does it all, checks off all the boxes, he's going to be great and will help us dictate flow of the game.

2.  Jaylon.  Stunned.  Really happy for the kid.  Feel good pick.  But, even if he's the next Luke Kuechly, he plays for us 3 years and then is a FA.  Would have preferred Spence.  I can't comment on the knee issue, as I have no professional skill set to do so.  I'm just feeling that even if he starts for us in 2017, I still think we way overspent. Happy for the kid and hope it works out for us.

From here, Collins and Prescott are fine selections.  I'm not terribly impressed with either, but they help fill a couple needs.  Our defense still looks to be in the weeds on the pass rush, and that's my biggest disappointment from this draft.  That said, I hope we are in 2017 and look back fondly at this weekend with the cornerstone RB and elite/healthy LB we scored.

Rico Gathers hasn't played football since 13. Was a basketball player at Baylor.

Seems like a good athlete. Can he make the same transition that Gates and Jimmy Graham did?
