Official Dallas Cowboys In Season Thread (2 Viewers)

So they are saying now they will put 108,000 people in that stadium? That's a ####load more than I thought the capacity was. I wonder if long term this will cause blackout issues?

The maximum capacity listed on the certificate of occupancy is just over 111,000. However, I believe the official sellout number is in the upper 70,000's.Somewhere around 78,000 I think. Party pass tickets ($29) do not count, only the seats. In any case, I don't think we're in any danger of any blackouts. From what I've learned, most every game (if not all) is about 95% soldout at this point. They have also announced that the roof will indeed be open for this game, barring any bad weather moving in. I think the decision was made for television purposes as much as anything, so they can televise the much anticipated overhead shot. Namely the opening itself and the star on top of the video board. One other note: Former Cowboy and now Giants DE Chris Canty has been ruled out with a calf injury.

Well that counts all the stadium staff, and workers and not just the paid attendees I'd assume. Maybe that's where the 108 comes from. The weather is supposed to be perfect Sunday night.

I read that Felix Jones will play a "significant" role this week versus the Giants?

Anyone care to elaborate? What exactly does that mean?

I'm thinking of starting him in a PPR league but he burned me last week!

I'm of the opinion the roof needs to be closed for noise reasons... 108k in an enclosed building would be fantastic when Eli goes under center.

Vela preview- This stuff is gold.

===================

Jason Garrett called one of his best games as a coordinator last December against Steve Spagnuolo and the Giants. Garrett played with an undermanned line against a Giants front that pummeled Tony Romo early and almost drove him out of the game. Garrett dialed in Spagnolo's blitzes and called a streak of winning draws and screens that gave Dallas two fourth quarter scores and a tough 20-8 win.

This week, Garrett is staring at a stronger hand. His staring line is healthy and he's got a full receiver corps. He should also have a healthy trio of running backs, including Felix Jones, who carried only six times after bruising a quad on the first series in Tampa.

Garrett also has Aquaman, the X-factor Martellus Bennett, who messes up secondary matchup schemes.

New York, however, has their own improvements. They've beefed up a line which was already strong. Their young secondary, force fed high picks the last two years, is maturing as a group. And the Giants added Michael Bolley, an athletic linebacker from Atlanta who could be ready to join the lineup after missing their debut with an injury.

When Dallas Has the Ball

What Garrett lacks this time is a book on his opposing coordinator. Spagnuolo is now the head man at St. Louis and long-time linebackers coach Bill Sheridan has taken his place. Sheridan has his own tendencies, but the defense he ran against the Redskins does not seem to have changed much from the one Spagnolo ran the last two years.

New York's scheme is a 4-3 version of Dallas' defense. It's a gap control front, which relies on mismatches and pressure. The Giants will deploy pre-snap in vanilla looking fronts and move their linemen and linebackers very late. The Giants will blitz heavily against runs and passes. Their favored tactic is to find the weakness on your line and then overload it with pressure. If one of your tackles is suspect, he'll see lots of pressure on his side.

Last week, Sheridan attacked Washington's center, Casey Rabach. Sometimes the Giants would put their tackles wide and bring MLB Antonio Pierce and SS Kenny Phillips over him.

Last year, New York targeted LG Cory Proctor. New York put a tackle over center Andre Gurode and an end over Flozell Adams. They then shifted Justin Tuck over Proctor, meaning Proctor had no help. Spagnolo also parked a linebacker in the gap between Proctor and Gurode and sent him after Tony Romo. The rush messed up Romo's back and forced him to play in pain the last 40 minutes.

Dallas has starter Kyle Kosier back at left guard and he should be a boon to Romo's protection. Extra time is key because New York likes to pressure with its front seven or its front six. Though the team blitzes a lot it likes to keep its safeties deep and deny the deep pass, putting the game on an offense's backs and tight ends to block and receive.

Garrett has two factors in his favor this week. First, New York's starting secondary appears nicked up. Left corner Aaron Ross will miss the game and starting free safety Michael Johnson's status is uncertain. This means Garrett will likely lean heavily on his 12 package, with tight ends Martellus Bennett and Jason Witten. Because both can block and get up the field, Dallas can split one of them wide or in the slot. This takes safeties out of the middle of the field and gives more single coverage to the receivers.

It will be interesting to see how New York counters. Against Washington last week, and against Dallas last year, the Giants played a lot of six man fronts, in a 4-2-5. They trusted their six men to handle the running attacks -- and they often succeeded. This let the Giants keep a deep halo while playing man with three corners and keeping two safeties deep. This look kept Santana Moss under wraps and the two deep look would also be a strong deterrent from the deep routes Romo launched to Williams, Austin and Patrick Crayton.

If the Giants use this package again, it will come down to the line and one of the tight ends to match up, giving space to the Dallas backs.

In these situations, look for lots of draws and the screen pass, which Garrett kept under wraps last week. It's a big part of the Dallas playbook and Garrett used it to great effect last year, countering Giants blitzes with screens for Choice, Bennett and Witten.

Of course, if Dallas sees two deep safeties, look for the tight end on the line, more likely Witten, to see lots of passes because he'll have single coverage from nickel LB Chase Blackburn.

The outside matchups will be key in this game. On first downs, RT Marc Colombo will draw Tuck and LT Adams will get Osi Umenyiora, who missed '08 with a knee injury. In '07, when both were last healthy, Adams shut Umenyiora out in both regular season matchups, helping Dallas sweep those contests. It's '09 now and it's unclear which will have the edge.

The Cowboys may try hammering the interior of New York's line early to see what type of gains they can get. New York had a three man rotation last year which collapsed against the run in December and January, when the team finished 1-4. It signed Rocky Bernard from Seattle and Chris Canty from Dallas to provide muscle and depth. The plan has already taken some hits, as Jay Alford was lost for the season with a knee ligament tear. Canty hurt a calf in practice yesterday and will miss the game, meaning the Giants will go with last year's starters Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins and rotate in Bernard.

Watch the matchup on the right side between Cofield and Leonard Davis. BIgg pushed him around in '07 but has some trouble against the delayed inside blitzes.

Special Teams

The Joe DeCamillis Experience was a happening last week, as the special teams bottled up Tampa's return teams and blocked a field goal. The Giants units looked shaky and were beaten by a Redskins fake field goal, which scored their first touchdown of the game. Tom Coughlin has expressed concern at this unit's preparation and in a closely matched game, which this should be, a big return or blown coverage could tip the balance.

Prediciton

This game will likely come down to which offensive line protects better. The Giants may run the ball effectively in the middle of the field, but they're a slowball team, which has yet to show it has a deep passing threat. If the Giants can't overwhelm the Dallas rush defense, their line is vulnerable if Eli Manning has to move them with his arm.

On Dallas' side, their line is healthier but is facing a deeper, more athletic Giants line, even without Canty. This line was a load last season and should be every bit as difficutl to contain.

It's early, and both teams have relatively good health, but I have a hard time seeing either one light up the scoreboard. Last year's rematch was 7-3 after three quarters. I don't see a score quite that low, but I'm expecting a rock-'em, sock-'em game where points will be hard to locate. I'm giving Dallas a slight edge because they're at home, and they have a more balanced offense with a more explosive passing game.

In a match this tight, turnovers could likely turn the outcome, and who can predict those?

Dallas 20, New York 16, though I would hardly be shocked if that scoring line was reversed.

Have you seen the price of beer in there? There's just so much you can fit in a crotch flask.
You can fit 80 oz in the beer bellyFor the wife/gf, there is the wine rack

Little bonus with the wine rack "Turn an A cup in to double Ds AND sport your favorite beverage for yourself and your friends! "

I reported this past week that the Cowboys were being cautious with Jones after suffering his thigh bruise and held him out for the remainder of the game with their sights set on this week and got pummeled for it in another thread. Live and learn is all I can tell them. This is "the" game that the Cowboys (and Jerry Jones) have targeted for turning Felix loose all along. Grand opening for the new stadium on national TV on a Sunday night. Uhh, if that doesn't spell it out, I don't know what does. There's a great deal of this offense we haven't seen yet, and a good portion of that centers around Felix Jones I can assure you. We haven't seen nothin' yet. We could even see Felix toss one to Marty B. I'm not kidding. Jerry has talked about "wow" factors for two years now, and Sunday night I fully expect it to be on full display.

I would start Felix without batting an eye. As far as that goes, the Cowboys may even decide to start him themselves. Something I will be watching for and the rest of you should as well.

One other tidbit I learned today, and this is a fact. Jerry Jones lobbied the NFL to get the Giants for his stadium opener and got his wish. Of course, the television viewer ratings potential backed his wishes being that New York is the largest television market in the country. By all accounts, this was an unprecedented courtesy given to an owner in this scenario.

I can tell you this: I'm pumped. Jerry Jones and his Cowboys are pumped. And I'd bet my bottom dollar that NBC is pumped. I heard an interview with Bob Costas this afternoon, and he referred to the new stadium as a "palace" (I've been there already- it is). He has been there since this morning in preparations for the game.

Now, LET'S GO COWBOYS!!!! :tfp:

$8 for the ole plastic bottle Miller Lite 16oz.'er.
Maybe this has been discussed already, but does anyone else think it's absolutely ######ed that they're selling fries in a separate line than the burgers, philly's, hot dogs, etc? It's a "fried" line...if you want fries I hope you're in the mood for a fried chicken sandwich...how many people willing to drop $20 per meal are also willing to stand in two (2) lines?Maybe I'm just a fat-kid at heart...

Damn good stuff. And this quote here is exactly what I was trying to point out in my post (#164) yesterday:4) – Garrett unveils his secrets – I believe that Jason Garrett was intentionally vanilla in Tampa. In “12″ the Cowboys always passed. In “21″ the Cowboys always ran. The showed the Wildcat, but didn’t do anything with it. I believe this has all been a plan to ambush new Giants DC Bill Sheridan. This early in the season, there is not enough film to give you a total picture of your opponent. Teams will intentionally try to leave bait for the opposition. If the Giants expect one thing, look for Garrett to wait for just the right time and try to spring a shocker for a TD. Let’s see what happens in this chess match.

I listen to Bob Sturm nearly every day. We think a lot alike. Have met him on many ocassions. His radio partner Dan McDowell is from the same part of Ohio as I am. You can catch them on "The Ticket" (www.theticket.com) M-F from 12-3 central time. There's a feed at the website.

Huge party going on tonight at Cowboys Stadium, hosted by none other than Jerry Jones and his wife. Several dignitaries in attendance including Ring of Honor members. Quite an extravaganza, including exquisitely prepared meals and entertainment of which the performers are a total "hush hush." That portion is being kept entirely under wraps. The director of this, shall we say "party," has been putting on such events for more than 25 years and says that he has never seen anything of this likeness in his 25 years. There is expected to be about 1000 people in attendance. Security couldn't be at a higher level.

I'm sure we'll get all the scoop after the fact, but I thought I'd go ahead and give everybody the "heads-up."

I saw that Andy. Alan Peppard posted something about it on the Dallasnews. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...n1.4bec505.htmlGala planner Steve Kemble is putting it together. He evidently also planned the celebration for Emmit Smith at Texas stadium when Emmit broke the NFL Rushing record.

For a man his age, or any age for that matter, Jerry Jones has a ton of energy. He has been getting up at around 2am all this week preparing for the official opening of Cowboys Stadium. I hope the team has been working just as hard, although hopefully with more sleep, and that we kick the Giants' tail. I expect it to be a 10+ point whuppin for us.

Hm. That's interesting. I didn't realize that was the same guy. Steve Kemble. I was there that day.

Well, anyone have a write up of the party last night, or is everyone still 'sleeping it off'?
From today's Star-Telegram:By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.ARLINGTON — What is a coronation without a party? In advance of tonight’s inaugural regular-season game at Cowboys Stadium, owner Jerry Jones feted Cowboys legends, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, local dignitaries and premium ticket holders with a black-tie grand-opening gala at the $1.2 billion venue in Arlington on Saturday night.Nobody builds a stadium like Jones, and based on Saturday night, few throw a party like him.The featured entertainer was legendary diva Diana Ross.Dallas billionaire H. Ross Perot said this was his first black-tie event at a football stadium."This is just incredible," Perot said. "It’s one of a kind."That was also the opinion of legendary broadcasters Bob Costas and John Madden as they walked across the red carpet. Now retired, Madden said he had no regrets about not calling the first game at the stadium, but he did have a wish."Most people want to play, and if you can’t play you want to coach," Madden said. "If you can’t coach you want to broadcast. My fantasy would be to play in Cowboys Stadium."Said Costas: "The broadcast should be covered as an event and a game. The stadium is a national story. The size, scope and video screen is the most impressive. I will watch the game like most of the fans — on the video screen."Former Cowboys coach Barry Switzer will attend his first Cowboys game since being fired in 1997. He said he couldn’t miss either the game or the party."This is something," Switzer said. "This is all Jerry Jones. I expected him to do something like this. He’s quite the visionary. I’m going to enjoy this event and the game."Many Cowboys legends were on hand, including Hall of Famers and Ring of Honor members Tony Dorsett, Bob Lilly and Randy White, who said they were amazed by the facility and couldn’t help wishing they could suit up one more time."Everything is big in Texas," Dorsett said he strolled across the red carpet. "Jerry has given the players a great venue. I would love to dress up one more time and run on the field."All-time NFL rushing leader Emmitt Smith did Dorsett one better."I told my wife as I was driving over that I would trade the rushing title for a chance to win one more Super Bowl at this new stadium," Smith said.

DALLAS — From the moment I boarded my flight from Atlanta to Dallas for Sunday’s Giants-Cowboys game, I knew the NFC East showdown would be more of an event — an “I was there moment.” I heard passengers say they were coming from Miami, Toledo and Detroit to see the game. There were fathers with their teenage sons, and there definitely were some fellas coming through in major frat-party mode.

I live in Atlanta, and the first question people ask is, “Do you golf?” Today in Dallas, the first question was, “Are you here for the game?” The opening of Cowboys Stadium and playing such a marquee foe like the Giants seems to be Jerry Jones’ and the NFL’s way of an economic stimulus plan for the Dallas metro area.

The scene of the day came when I was at the baggage-claim carousel at the Dallas Forth-Worth airport and a Cowboys fan was doing some good-natured woofing with some Giants fans. A middle-aged man got his luggage, opened it up, pulled out a jersey, walked over to both parties and said something I couldn’t quite hear. But then I saw everybody laughing.

The gentleman was holding a Bills No. 81 jersey with “Owens” written across the back.

In addition to the roof, the glass end zone doors will also be open tonight.

Don't know if he was in attendance for last night's party, but LeBron James will be at the game among so many of the others.

Nine hours and counting...

:lmao: Me too

Sucks we are on tonight. I can't wait!

Gotta beat the Giants or I'll never hear the end of if from my best friend. He's the biggest sports fan I know and I'll never live down how the Giants gave us a beat down in our new stadium's opening debut.

Go Cowboys, Go Felix!

If we were to set this day to music, one might want to consider Phil Collins-

"I can feel it... coming in the air tonight... Oh Lord."

Andy or anybody else who might know, what ever became of the whole Matt Jones visit? I love what we are rolling with, but I worry what happens if we sustain a few injuries.

Matt Jones visit? When did you hear that this took place? I don't know that he ever stepped foot in Texas, let alone Dallas.By all my accounts he has never been even remotely close to being on the Cowboys radar.I don't think he fits or even makes sense. He wouldn't have a place in this pecking order and thus would make no sense whatsoever in signing him or even showing interest. This is news to me. What have you got?I'm not trying to be smart. I'm just greatly curious.

Some last minute adjustments are being made at the stadium. After complaints from the Titans and 49ers from the preseason and the potential of Giants players getting pummeled with beer and unkind words, glass partitions are being put up in the bar area where the opponents make their way to the field from the locker room. So much for the intimacy of getting in touch with the opponent. Probably a good decision though. You'd have thought that this would have been the foresight from the get-go though.

The stadium roof is opening right now (it only takes 12 minutes).

The current temperature is 87 degrees, but will fall as the sun goes down.

The cheerleaders (we can't forget them, can we) absolutely love the new stadium and performing here. Their locker room is much larger than what they had at Texas Stadium. Every locker has it's own mirror and electrical outlets. At Texas Stadium, there were only five outlets that they had to share and fight over.

Yea, I remember visiting the stadium. I was underwhelmed, but still found it to be a great place to see a game. Can't wait to visit the new place this January.

Let me be the first to say that this defense is going to get Wade fired sooner than later. If we do make the playoffs great if not atleast we're done with him. The other question is how long MB will be out if at all.

As I said in the game thread, this loss falls SQUARELY, imo, on Scandrick and Romo. Both just were a total fail tonight.

And zero sacks thru 2 games. Yeah, nothing at all wrong with the pass rush, right?

And the 'boys can look so freaking good at times too. Just one ##### of a pill to swallow tonight. Then again, when you lose the turnover battle 0-4, then, well, it's your own damn fault.

Awful loss. Truly a game that should not have been close.

-Romo is Danny White. I'm NOT saying replace him, just know what you have.

-Garrett called a poor game. I know the players have to execute, but when you are running the ball for 9 yards a freaking carry, make them stop you from doing it.

-Where is the press coverage, if you are going to blitz what do you think the hot read is going to be- A slant (and our Cb's are 8 yards off the ball.

-Coaches other then Joe D are terrible.

-Hopefully Barber is not out too long and Felix looks banged up still.

I knew this team would give us a couple of games like this, but I still can't believe how much it annoys the heck out of me.

Going to bed - to stare at the ceiling.

Grrrr.

Let me be the first to say that this defense is going to get Wade fired sooner than later. If we do make the playoffs great if not atleast we're done with him. The other question is how long MB will be out if at all.
He'll be done for a while. Damnit.

Four Reasons Dallas lost tonight:

1. Tony Romo, this game would have been totally different had Romo not turned the ball over so many times

2. Orlando Scandrick move him back to the nickel corner and stop screwing around, Wade needs to learn to be decisive he doesnt want to hurt someones feeling so he does this rotating BS, how many teams in the league do this? Zero

3. Flozell Adams, we all we know he is good for at least one penalty and it could have not came at a worse time.

4. Bobby Carp your on the field for only about 20 snaps but yet you still mention to get your name called and not for anything good. 3rd and long and you hold your man giving the Giants a first down that leads to about 50 yards of field position change.

Tough loss watching this game especially on the last drive I just knew the Giants were going to score. I have to admit that I was very skeptical of the Giants ability to move the ball offensively but they really showed something tonight. And I am stunned that the Dallas defense couldnt get at least one sack. To go from leading the league in sacks to not recording a sack through the first two games is unbelievable.

On a positive note this is only Week 2 so this loss while painful is not the end of the world.

Yeah. Delay the obvious. Inevitable. No MB for a while, the defense is terrible. The last two games should be an indication of what to expect. Yes, I know they got scoreboard on TB, but they did not look good on D then...looked awful tonight. This does not bode well.

Pretty hard to make a call on it, but the way the schedule sets up we could be easily looking at the worst 6-1 team of all time. Has a 5-2/ 6-1 team ever gone on to finish 7-9 because that's what you have here.

And it wasn't the hardest prediction to make, but good god Roy sucks. He can't even play decoy like TO did when not catching balls.

The 2TE sets are getting nothing accomplished.

Flozell is a punk that has to go. I don't give a crap what the replacement player is out there. Has. to. go.

DBs are garbage. Saftey still a big weakness and now no pressure is getting to the QB again.

Enjoy the next 4 weeks because after that it's one  after another.

Some of you guys are just being a little to damn hard on the 'Boys. I'll try to give you a voice of reason and say that we ran for over 250 yards on the Giants....read that again 250 yards!!! We turned the ball over 4 times which resulted in 24 points. Our D held its own until the final drive by forcing FG's instead of TD's. Romo could have put the game away if he didn't force the ball to Hurd with 6:00 min left. I honestly feel that we were moving the ball so easily that Romo got overconfident and just started trying to make a highlight reel. While we lost there are a lot of positives to take....we shut down the vaunted Jacobs & Bradshaw and most reasonable Giants fans will admit they were outplayed for the most part as Chris Collinsworth said. We can continue to get better but its not like we got smacked and don't know who didn't or why. 1-1 next Monday nite vs Carolina....move on and lets believe that they will correct the few issues that surfaced last night.
