ya know, him offering I can see. IT seems like a good thing to do, but SOMEONE has to realize this is a bad idea. It is in his head, he admits it, and of course it would be. We do not need that!
IRVING, Texas -- It was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's idea to resume holding duties after a layoff of almost three years. That doesn't mean he's thrilled about it.
"I'd prefer not to do it, I think, for obvious reasons," Romo said Thursday. "Pops told me one time, 'Leadership is doing what has to be done.' "
The most obvious reason is the miserable experience Romo had the last time he was the Cowboys' holder. He botched a hold on a short field goal that would have given Dallas the lead late in a January 2007 playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Yet Romo approached special teams coach Joe DeCamillis on the plane ride Sunday night after the NFC East co-leaders' loss to the New York Giants and offered his services as holder. Punter Mat McBriar was struggling in the role, contributing to kicker Nick Folk's poor production.
Folk has missed eight of 24 field goals this season -- one more miss than his previous two seasons combined. McBriar took the blame for three of the misses, including a clutch 42-yard shank early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss.
Romo worked as holder during Wednesday's practice for the first time since the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season. All indications are that the franchise quarterback will fill that role Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
"To me, that just shows what a competitor he is and how much he wants to help our team win," said DeCamillis, who described Romo as an upright target who is natural with his hands. "He had a bad experience, and he really wants to help us out and help us win games. That's a real pro."
Romo acknowledged that the botched hold in Seattle three seasons ago has been on his mind this week.
"When you're coming back to doing something, and something like that happened in the past, you have to be mentally strong and mentally feel as though you can do something at a high level," Romo said. "If I felt like I'm going to suck, I wouldn't be offering up to help in that situation. Hopefully I'm going to be pretty good. If I'm not, I'm not going to be doing it very long or at all."
Backup quarterback Brad Johnson served as Dallas' holder the last two seasons, but he was released in the offseason. McBriar won a training camp competition against Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd and David Buehler by default but was never comfortable as a holder.
Romo has a week of practice to find his bearings with Folk.
"He's pretty good at it," Folk said, "so it shouldn't be too big of a transition."
The Cowboys, tied with the Eagles at 8-4 in the division, are fighting for a playoff berth. They can't afford their field goal woes to continue. That's why Romo volunteered to help.
"When you're the quarterback of a football team, really all that matters is winning," Romo said. "I think that was the point. We need to continue to get better in certain areas.
"We're always talking about improvement and figuring out ways to get better as a team. This is another thing, hopefully, that can help us continue to improve. The bottom line is figuring out a way to win football games. If this helps us do that, I'm going to do it."

First of all, I'm an Ohio native who moved to Dallas in 1998. Just to clear that up.Second of all, it was the combination of the two points that I was trying to express as a "strange picture."
I opened the post with a "no intention to defend Wade Phillips." Pay attention.
Wade Phillips is on the curb and approaching being kicked from it, as it should be.
As those who frequent "Cowboys" threads can attest, I've had my finger pointed towards Mike Holmgren as Wade's successor for quite some time now.

I haven't posted all week because I have no idea what to think of this team at this point.
This upcoming game with the Chargers has enough storylines to fill an entire book rack.
While it's easy to point the finger at Wade and/or the coaching staff, well, Parcells and his crew couldn't get it done either.
In the end, it still comes back to the team itself. The players on the field. Simple execution. Blocking and tackling. Fundementals.
These guys are going to have to dig deep here at home and suck it up. That's all there is to it. Play like you mean it and fight for it.
My god, this is football. Buckle up and get it done.

I think that Dallas will play a complete game and come out with a victory. Im very eager to see if Folk can fix his kicking woes with Romo as a holder. On another note I will be rooting like hell for the Eagles to win because the Giants have had the Cowboys number this season and I would hate to have face them in the postseason.

Wow. Some really great posts on this page (23), most notably from Reacher, Ridgelake and Chaos Commish.I like all 3 points made here, especially #1 and #2.
1. Absolutely too much shotgun. No question about it. It takes too much away from the running game, which is directly correlated to the recent lack of success in said running game.
2. I am so much for getting both Choice and Ogletree more playing time. If certain players aren't playing hungry (Barber?, Williams), then put some hungry players in. That would be Choice and Ogletree, who are also fresh-legged and not dinged up in any way.
On the defensive side of the ball, I want to see more press coverage. Especially on 3rd down passing situations. While we're getting enough pressure on the QB in most situations, we're getting killed on quick slants. Eliminate that and we'll get more sacks and/or turnovers.

I'm all for Romo being the place holder if the coaches feel that part of the reason Folk is missing is that the holds are not correct.
If all that is true, how could you not be for it. While you're at practcing that, put in a couple of nice fakes and take advantage of your starting QB as the placeholder and keep those special teams guys on edge.
Romo was good at it. What happened in Seattle was a fluke and I definately like what I've seen out of Tony Romo the last 8 weeks. The guy is playing good football. If everyone was playing as well as Romo on the team, they would have won this division already.
I'd bench Barber and put him 3rd string. A guy that could come in when Choice and Jones gets winded. Can give you a couple of hard nosed plays per half then sit him.
WR's have been playing fine, as good as they can. Witten's played well too the last few weeks offensively, the Cowboys just need to run the ball.
I guess I'm more surprised at the lack of production by M. Bennett. I know he gets like a catch or two a game, but I thought he was going to be a real weapon. With his size and athletic ability, he should be better. There was plenty of opportunity with TO gone this year to kind of break out from underneath Witten this year and he didn't even come close.

I think it's cool we have an owner who's willing to take a chance to make things bigger and brighter. Obviously, nothing can take the place of winning, nothing. But we all know he's at least trying to win and win a SB at that. He recognizes that the NFL is a show and willing to try new things. I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like at least.In the end, we need a big victory against SD. I want to see what Damarcus Ware diving into Phillip Rivers looks like in 3d.Oh boy.

This is a must win. We need to go 3-1. You go 2-2, most likely you do not win the division and the two main teams you are fighting with for the 2 wild card spots are the Giants and Packers both who hold the tie breakers vs Dallas. It is division or nothing imo. So what is better for Dallas, a Philly loss or a Giant loss? I say a Giant loss. Dallas can take care of their own destiny vs Philly in Dallas.

Really, if every team thought like you the NFL would suck. The Giants 2 years ago the Cards last year. Sh!!t just let the teams with the best records after 13 weeks play in the Super Bowl and forget about playing the season out. Actually this has been the most enjoyable season of the NFL in a long time. I mean in the past few years the Cowboys were picked by Vegas to win the superbowl as the favorite coming into the season and then they would flat out not make the playoffs. I mean how big of a disappointment is that? This year you know they have no chance with the coaches they have so you have nothing to be disappointed about. I am having a great time watching them, every win is like gravy. Maybe they will win this weekend! That would be swell!!!

That's pretty much it in a nutshell, and we definitely wanna pull for the Eagles tonight.As for the Cowboys, execution and discipline will be key today. We've got to be able to run the ball and stay out of 3rd and longs.
Whichever team runs the ball better and has the better 3rd down conversion percentage wins this game.
Winning the turnover battle goes without saying, and Folk must hit his field goals.
The playoffs start today. There is no longer room for error.
Gotta take care of business at home.

Must win game today. No question. I think Dallas can beat New Orleans and can beat Washington but Philly coming to Dallas isnt my idea of an easy win. Lets not forget last season.
Chargers- game plan should be to run the ball... a lot. Dump the ball off a lot to Witten and the backs. Keep Rivers off the field. Have someone cover Gates like a glove, not a lineman/OLB either.
Saints- The Redskins showed that this team is beatable. I think the Cowboys have the offense to outscore New Orleans, just keeping New Orleans off the field will be the tough part.
Washington- Shouldnt be a hard game but they always play the Cowboys tough. This is the one game the Cowboys SHOULD win.
Eagles- hopefully it wont come down to this game again to get into the playoffs....

Everyone is dreading the upcoming schedule but if Dallas could beat Chargers today and somehow knock off the Saints, they would have momentum on their side heading into the playoffs just Arizona last year and the Giants before that.

I honestly think this team can beat the Chargers. I think having Wade Phillips is a huge advantage as well....for this game at least. I still hate Jason Garrett. Most predictable offense in the NFL...luckily he has start talent to aid his poor play calling.

Don't know just yet what the plan is for the roof and end zone doors. Temps will be approaching 70 by kickoff and it's sunny.
Dallas' warmest part of the day is usually around 4pm.
On a different note, Troy Aikman was saying this morning on Sporting News Network that he doesn't like the idea of Romo taking over the holding duties.
He felt that finding somebody else, even if they were to bring somebody in, would have been a better resolution.
His point being that he didn't like the idea of taking away from or forcing Romo to have to change up his practice routines at this point in the season, saying that "Romo has enough pressure on him as it is right now, and to add to it in this fashion isn't the way to go."
ETA: Bob Sturm makes the same point (minutes ago) that Troy does, saying that "6 of the 8 inactives every week this season have been the same. Cut one of them and sign a freakin' holder!"

This is the game that's going to get Wade fired. His defense is getting ripped apart and next week we will again be underdogs to the Saints and if we lose extend the losing streak to 3 in a row where even finishing with wins against the Skins and Eagles might not get us in even as a WC team. This offseason the teams needs to get more athletic at OL, figure out what the deal is at RB (consider more play-action when they do), and continue to add defensive play-makers. Another weapon at WR wouldn't hurt. I hope I'm wrong but wow not so good so far.

Why is Nick Folk still on this team? He blamed the holds and the holds were perfectly fine before, but he used those as a scapegoat. WHATS THE ISSUE NOW YOU ####? I hate seeing his stupid ####### cry baby face after each ####### miss. Why do they even kick field goals? Field goal kickers are ####### worthless, I would go for it on each and every 4th down. #### FIELD GOAL KICKERS! Thats how I run my team, 4 downs baby! NO MORE FIELD GOALS. Anyways, this ####### #### better not be on this team tomorrow. I hope he kills himself after the game.

I guess, but it's not like he's learning something new and it's a big stress on him. He's done it before and done it well. I respect his opinion but in the end, that's all it is, and it's not the one that counts.

Bill Cowher is my #1 pick for HC next season, since we know that Wade isn't gonna be back after another Dec. collapse. But let's face it, this team, even had they won today, is simply NOT in the same class as NO or Minn.

Im pretty sure its going to be Mike Holmgren. Didn't they already bring him in as some sort of consultant?
Not that it matters because this team WILL lose it's last 5 on the season but let's assume our lame duck coaching staff can turn things around ... if the Eagles win we still control our own destiny. If the Giants win it may come down to whether the Vikings have something to play for in week 17.

I dont want Cowah. I dont really want Holmgren either but he would be better than Cowah or what we have now. I would like to see Shanny come in here and bring Kubiak with him from Houston after he gets fired as well. I think Cowah is going to get the Carolina job because he will have a lot of control. Holmgren is going to want a lot of control too. Shanny on the other hand may not need as much...what the Cowboys could really use is a friggin GM.
I just worry about who the defensive coordinator will be. We have to stay with the 3-4 since we have all the players on defense for a 3-4.

Looks like so far the Eagles are taking it to the Giants. Assuming that holds up ... we'd be sitting in the 6th playoff slot and 1 back of the Eagles. Assuming we lose to the Saints and beat the Skins we'd need the Eagles to lose one more game against someone at that point for week 17 to mean something against them. If we run the table we still win the division. We'll need the Broncos to beat the Eagles next week I'd think and the Vikes to beat the Giants in week 17. That said, this team very well could be 8-8 to finish the season on a 5 game losing streak. It could go either way at this point.

I would love to see Shanny come to Dallas with Kubaik as his OC. The Cowboys offense would be elite instantly. As for the defense I wish there was some way to keep Wade on as a DC and not Head Coach. Wade is one of the better defensive minds in the entire league. I realize the December losses are starting to add up but really the blame falls on the offense namely Garrett and Folk. Scoring 10 points midway through the 4th vs the Chargers and 17 vs the Giants (sans a late TD) will not win games late in the season. Anyone have any ideas why Folk looked so great the past couple of seasons and now looks like a steaming pile of #####?Texasmouth said:

Well, Dallas, once again, proved that they can hang with the elite teams. But aren't good enough to throw away 10 points and still win. A recurring theme over the last couple of years.
Call me crazy, but I think we have a darn good chance to beat the Saints. For whatever reason, I think they pull it together. The Saints have barely been scraping by the last few weeks. They have all the pressure of the undefeated season and whatnot. That said, I could also see Dallas getting blown out. Especially if Payton finds a way to repeatedly get Bush isolated in space on our ILBs.

This is how the Giants and Chargers had their way with us. Brady James is solid against the run but has been repeatly burnt in coverage.

-Dependence on shotgun for passing situations. This team throws greater than 95% (often damn near 100% taking out scrambles) of the time out of shotgun and teams can key on this. Romo is not capable of running so teams can just drop everyone back. There's a reason why this team can't score because a bend, don't break philosophy wins versus this coordinator and staff. Every time.
-The 3RB thing is a major distraction. I've never been on board with this as some sort of great advantage. If it is an advantage it's not getting utilized in any meaningful way. The backs are not getting in a rhythm and the OL is not athletic enough to do any sort of up-front blocking to wear down defenses for late game situations. One of these needs to be phased out, and despite the fact that Barber is obviously the one that has no place on this team I'm afraid Choice will get shut down.
-Accountability. Huge problem and not just because the Ticket is on this one hard. The whole Folk holder and Wade nonsense about his regular season record has trickled down to the depths of this team. If they lose it's nobody's fault. Jerry even buys into it because god knows he has had nothing to do with this right?
-Returners. Felix doesn't want to do this job. He fears getting hit hard. It's obvious. Same on the revolving punt return spot. I know they brought in someone this season to take that job, but for gods sake get this out of felix's hands at least.
-Depth. There just aren't quality spot fill-in guys coming off the bench in any roles. This goes back to the horrific run of drafting in the past 5 years or so. I don't demand or expect to get 4+ starters per draft, but dammit you have to have guys that can come off the bench and be capable for a series or two. This is extra critical in stopping the December slide as players do tend to wear down.

I'd argue the Chargers were NOT able to do that. At least not repeatedly. And the Giants weren't able to do it much either, though one instance was the Jacobs TD.Teams can and will pass on most any defender. The issue is how much, how often, and what it leads to point and first down wise. Basicly, what is the success percentage and the frequency of it. Teams have not been repeatedly exploiting this like
Dallas held SD to a season low point total. The defense did a lot right. We're not going to shut out every single team. Its the offense throwing away 10 points that cost the game between two fairly closely matched teams.
