Kasich: I told you so

The Republican who refused to endorse Trump says he's not surprised.

As the wall of Republican support for Donald Trump crumbled Saturday, Ohio Gov. John Kasich took a victory lap.

"Nothing that has happened in the last 48 hours is surprising to me or many others," said Kasich

"Many people were angry and questioned why I would not endorse Donald Trump or attend the Republican Convention," he continued. "I’ve long had concerns with Donald Trump that go beyond his temperament. We have substantive policy differences on conservative issues like trade, our relationship with Russia, and the importance of balancing the federal budget.

"I’ve held out hope that he would change on those disqualifying policy positions, but he has not. I’ve also encouraged him to change his behavior for the better and offer a positive, inclusive vision for our country, but he has not.

"It's clear that he hasn't changed and has no interest in doing so," Kasich continued. "As a result, Donald Trump is a man I cannot and should not support. The actions of the last day are disgusting, but that’s not why I reached this decision, it has been an accumulation of his words and actions that many have been warning about. I will not vote for a nominee who has behaved in a manner that reflects so poorly on our country."

"Our country deserves better."

I thought if Trump drops out, Pence would slide over as pres candidate??
The early consensus seems to be That the GOP is just screwed if Trump drops out.  Potentially a phantom Trump/Pence ticket could win enough electoral votes for faithless electors to pick some random Republican, but that's legally iffy and not at all realistic.

Besides, the Republicans already have a good ticket in place.  They're just running as Libertarians.

At this point, the best case scenario for the Republican party is to have a faithless elector vote for Pence or some other Republican. If the race ends up with Hillary at 269, Trump at 268, and Pence at 1, then the vote would go to the House Of Representatives where they could choose Pence.

But I'm not sure if Hillary's popularity will go low enough to keep her from getting 270 electoral votes.

If people on this board start getting on Trump because of what he said on Stern, I'm seriously going to larf.

Getting on him for Megyn Kelly, groping, et. al is one thing; getting on him for Stern better not be this board's meme. That's hilarious.

Stern rose to prominence saying #### like Trump says. And this board happens to like Stern.

eta* Oh, I hate Stern. And Trump. But very few people on this board do.  They get off on it.
A lot of people like the "Dumb and Dumber" characters, too.  Doesn't mean they should be elected president, even if the Republicans did nominate them.

When the Lewinsky thing came out the story was that he lied under oath

go ahead and find me reasonable people that said that an affair was a high crime and/or misdemeanor worthy of imoeachment.

it was always the perjury, subornation of perjury and destruction of evidence attempting to cheat a woman of her day in court.
And with Obama, it really was a concern about whether he was born in the US, really.  We get it.

How can you take a person seriously if they believe in hilariously foolish things like this planet only 6,000 years old?  It's just a miserable starting point.  This would be the guy that guides science funding for the country.  People just don't want a leader that is completely divorced from science.
So that makes him more dangerous than a guy who openly admires a thug like Putin? A guy who promised to try to change libel laws to shut down reporters who criticized him? A guy who brags about sexually assaulting women? A guy who has advocated intentionally bombing civilians in the Middle East? A guy who changes his mind every 5 minutes? And then brazenly lies about what his stance was 5 minutes ago? A guy with an ego so huge that dangerous international enemies could easily goad him into stupid actions?

I don't believe for a second that you actually believe that. It's just safe for you to say now that it's clear that Trump has no chance to win.

You are part of the problem. Stop it. This happens far too often on both sides. It was amazing to me how McCain was praised so much whenever he stood up to Bush while Bush was President and tons of people on the Left said that he was a very reasonable man that they could vote for. Then when he was the nominee he was simply "Bush's 3rd Term" and smeared as being dangerous. Romney was long admired by many on the Left, especially for his healthcare in MA. Then he's the GOP nominee and he's The Devil. Just stop.

The Republicans who bash Obama and make all sorts of stupid claims about how dangerous he is and he's made the world are more dangerous to who we are as a nation and people that Obama could ever be. I'm not happy with a whole lot of what President Obama has done, but he hasn't destroyed us and to talk as if he has is asinine. And Hillary won't either.

The inability to distinguish between actually dangerous politicians and ones we simply disagree with is infinitely more dangerous to our nation's future than ANY candidate.

If Trump wants to go out like a Boss....he has to grab that ##### when they shake hands at the beginning of the debate and then just walk off the stage.

Ten minutes ago, Trump tweeted about Juanita Broadrick again, this time linking a Breitbart interview.
I just don't see how he views this as a strategy that will result in him getting a single additional vote.  2012 - historic GOP problems with Hispanic voters?  Let's nominate a candidate who will be the least popular candidate with that group possible.  Problems with women voters?  Let's remind all of them how my opponent had to put up with a cheating lying scumbag husband yet stood by him faithfully throughout the years!

i understand that he's attempting to make a broader point by highlighting that HRC went on the attack and was an enabler of her husband's transgressions, but that nuance is surely going to get lost in translation.  The second he brings any of this up tonight, all Clinton has to do is play the aggrieved wife card, mention how Donald himself has a long record of infidelity and his own rape allegations, including one of a 13 year old girl currently subject of ongoing litigation, and she's seized the high ground.

I guess this is the last gasps of a dying man, but it's so unlikely to result in anything helpful I have no idea why he's pursuing this.

What explaining?
Is this your understanding? That NBC had these hot tapes for 10 years, a producer suddenly remembered they existed? Yet someone from NBC anonymously felt compelled to  leak them even though NBC was going to do a story on them? Yeah?

Trump was a star there. NBC paid him 3 mill a year. They helped create his modern  brand which he practically ran on. NBC had him on SNL. MSNBC featured his rallies.

The list of prominent journalists at NBC and MSNBC is probably a dozen deep. But somehow no one ever checked their vault or asked around. Yeah there should be questions and answers.

Trump is neither intelligent nor self aware. I'd bet that he actually still thinks he's going to win, actually, and that none of this is a big deal.

Why? Any semblance of or responsibility for impartiality went out the window long ago.

Because NBC itself is reflected by this. They knew this about Trump but they made him a star and put him on SNL. Plus Bush is on Today.

And why was it necessary for someone inside NBC to leak the story if NBC was going to run with it?

She should approach him with her left hand guarding her crotch for the shake. Hand him a bottle of Nasonex with the shake.

Are you talking about putting him on the Apprentice or pumping up his campaign...if it's the latter, the Republicans only have themselves to blame since there was plenty of this stuff out there and well Billy Bush is a Bush.

Both, he was NBC's television star. Seems important to all this.

But I agree on your point on the latter, yes absolutely.

I have different standards for entertainers vs the leader of the free world, as would most other people, I'd think and hope.

Of course. We're learning that thankfully. However news journalism was taken over by entertainment divisions and ESPNization mentality long ago. At a minimum this was a failure of journalism. Think about the fact that these tapes had to be leaked from a news organization.

Sorry republicans we know you want to abort this campaign. Unfortunately you will be forced to carry it to full term. (Stole this from somewhere on the internet)
