Woah. I had no clue they were making any kind of movie. Hopefully the animated does well enough they later consider making a live action.

Not to suggest that I'm a fan of the series, but I have a lab named Tika and a crotchety old cat named Flint. And used to have a very troublesome, roaming cat named Tas, but go figure he went wanderlust and disappeared a half-dozen years ago.

Cool. I only read a couple of the Dragonlance books, but I loved reading them. It's been near 20 years since I picked one up. It will be interesting to see what I remember.

Same here. I probably own about 30 of the books in the series. Though very few of them are of the quality of the initial trilogy and the twins trilogy.

Have you read the new ones? Seems like I read Dragons of Summer Flame, but I cannot remember anything about it, and never continued. The original and twins trilogies are canons of fantasy reading.

I was sitting here looking at my bookshelf and trying to remember where they all went... they used to fill the top two shelves of my book shelf, but now the first 6 books are all that are left. Was thinking maybe I boxed them up, but then I remembered... I took all the books I didn't think I was likely to read and took them down to the Astrodome to give to Katrina refugees. All I have left now are the original 6.I did read the first book that amounted to being the children of the original characters, I think that's the one you mean. It was ok, but nothing to get me hooked back into the series again. Not even sure if they continued that storyline on or not.

Yep, that is it. Caramon's kid a wizard, running around with Tas and crap. They started a War of Souls or some such series. No idea if it was any good.

this "movie" is a farce....f'n cartoon....jeebus...

my favorite book series of all time...

i have read 90% of the dl books, but nothing will ever compare to the original 3....

Sounds pretty disappointing. Still, I'd like to hear a review from someone who doesn't admit from the start that he lost interest in the books as a kid. Obviously if you didn't like the books and think D&D is for nerds (...which I guess is true...) then this movie isn't going to be for you. It is a shame to hear about the bad animation tho. With today's animated movies the bar is set pretty high in that regard.

from IMDBA Faithful, if Abridged, Adaptation, 10 January 2008

9/10

Author: Etrival from United States

This small screen adaptation of the timeless novel from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman tells the story of Tanis Half-Elven and his cadre of friends in their quest to find the Disks of Mishakal and stop the Dark Goddess Takhisis from taking over the world of Krynn.

Tanis Half-Elven, voiced by Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor of Smallville fame), is a man trying to come to grips with being, as the book claimed it "half of two things, and all of nothing". He is half-elf and half-human, being accepted by neither and distrusted by both races.

Tanis and his friends Caramon Majere (Rino Romano), Raistlin Majere (Kiefer Sutherland), Sturm Brightblade (Marc Worden), Flint Fireforge (Fred Tatasciore), and Tasslehoff Burrfoot (Jason Marsden), have reunited in the town of Solace after five years, where all spent their time finding themselves and their way in the world. Returning to Solace, they find their friend Tika Waylan (Michelle Trachtenberg) to be all grown up and the new owner of the Inn most of them grew up in. At the inn, they meet Goldmoon (Lucy Lawless) and Riverwind (Phil LaMarr) of the Que-shu tribe of barbarians out of the north. Goldmoon comes to Solace bearing the fabled Blue Crystal Staff. After a rousing tale by the old wizard known only as Fizban the Fabulous, they are accosted by a 'church official', who is accidentally thrown into the hearth by Riverwind and set aflame. Fizban snatches the Blue Crystal Staff away from Goldmoon, striking the official down and magically healing him with the staff's mystical powers... this sets forth a chain of events that remains remarkably faithful to the book, yet still compressed enough to remain within the 90 minute time span.

Semi-decent animation and a few corny lines of dialogue as well as okay delivery are the only things separating this from being a 10.

Half way through(God bless the internet!). Some thoughts:

Tika has some large breasts!

Riverwind too short

Forestmaster Unicorn covered in some weird ivy-like growth

The animation reminds me of Thundercats....snarf!

Just finished watching it. My reaction as I watched.

Wow. That was horrible. Utterly, completely horrible. I loved Dragonlance, and when it comes to movies I'm extremely easy to please. And that was just utterly horrible. If I had kept a running track of everything in the movie that made me cringe it would easily be the longest post I've ever made on footballguys.

To just hit some of the worst parts...

There is a soundtrack running through THE ENTIRE MOVIE. I noticed one 5 second gap where they wanted you to hear the creepy winds outside of Darkenwood where there wasn't music going. That was the only point in the entire movie that didn't have a musical score going. And it wasn't even a good musical score. It was a near-continuous distraction throughout the movie.

The entire thing sounded like the actors just sat around a table and read their parts, with no attempt to act or bring the scene to life. It isn't that they didn't put emotion in their voices. It's that it sounds like they just all sat there waiting for the person who speaks ahead of them to finish and then start up themselves. There was no attempt to actually make the dialogue into a scene that is happening to real characters. No attempt to time the lines so that the animated characters would have time to actually make the scene seem like it mattered. The whole movie just galloped through the plot like that.

Those were by far the two huge things that totally made this movie suck. Though there were lots of little things. Few of the characters had a voice anywhere close to what I think they should have. Most of the characters had something severely wrong with them, like Riverwind being way too short compared to others in the party. People's height changed from one scene to the next... Flint walking next to Tanis has his head come up to the bottom of Tanis' chest, but when they are sitting in equal height chairs next to each other in the Inn they are the same height. In one scene Laurana is almost the exact same height as Tanis, then 2 minutes later the top of her head is level with his mouth. The elves were the ugliest lot of elves you could imagine. One had a nose that looked like it belonged on Rocky Balboa.

The mixture of animation styles was horrid... the one reviewer mentioned it, it was like they did some in 3D and some in 2D. The Dragons were way too small in my opinion. Tika had bigguns but was pretty ugly. Tas was just annoying to listen to, and not for the reasons a kender is annoying to hear.

This thing really looked not only like someone's first attempt at animation, but someone's first attempt at movie making in general. They plain don't know how to tell a story, how to build a mood, how to build emotion, how to build drama.

I won't go into the myriad of details they screwed up, like Raistlin telling Bupu to find him a book with a midnight blue cover and silver runes... and she later hands him the book and it's brown with gold trim. This was a waste of time even for a lover of the Dragonlance series to watch.

The original 3 were the first books I ever read at age 11. I cried when Sturm and Flint died. :goodposting:

Can't remember how many times I have read them since...but it is a lot. No way I am watching this thing, the trailer looked brutal.

I am feeling very disappointed right now. I didn't even know it was being made, now I find out and it sounds like it is not good.

I loved these books.

Verminaard wearing a dishtowel over his face?

Takhisis is all fuzzy in most of her scenes.

People missing hands and feet.

Extra hands and feet.

No dead lizard for healing.

Giant Square Chins For All .

No death by acid - wasn't this the reason for the PG-13 stated by the authors?

Big Wiggly Bewbs on Innocent Young Barmaids - seriously, she's supposed to have a rack and all, but holy stripclub freakshow, Batman!

Staff light punches people in the chest?

It seemed to be an average of about four frames per second. I even paused and frame-by-framed it, there are places where I had to advance 10 or 12 frames to see anything change.

The Forestmaster looked more like the Lawnornament.

Sizechanges all around. Grow a foot, shrink a foot. Grow a foot, shrink a foot.

No Horns for Sturm, no Helm for Caramon, but Verminaard got a dishtowel?

Elistan macking on Laurana? Wasn't there a pretty important theme later on, of Tanis's jealousy and how it was unfounded, that Laurana was mad he'd infer that Elistan was anything more than her wise mentor? Gonna be kind of hard for her to get mad now, having been macked on. Hope I'm using that term right - isn't that how you kids say it?

Bewbs here, Bewbs there, Bewbs everywhere! Tika's Bewbs are so freakishly huge they deserved a second entry. Though, I do wish my wife (or any woman anywhere, for that matter) had the ability to make their bewbs dance around and point like that.

Watching the first bit right now and am 99% sure I will not go much further. Holy crap what crap.

Bad animation, abysmal voice acting and casting.

And lol at making Tika's boobies bounce in each scene she is in.

Updates as suggestions are made.

Tanis
Raistlin - Tom Hiddleston
Tika
Tasslehoff
Flint
Sturm
Caramon - why not keep up the fun and get Thor. It would actually be perfect
Riverwind
Goldmoon

Kitiara

Fizban

My 11 year old is an avid reader. He reads a lot of different genres and has read plenty of fantasy. I finally got the first book electronically, and we are going to read it at the same time. I don't remember a lot outside of the characters, but looking forward to reliving some of my childhood.

Sean Bean would be awesome for Sturm....too old though.

I like the look of Evangeline Lilly for Kit but she doesnt have the attitude. Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider days) could fit that character.

I could see a Scarlett Johansen as Kit.

Blast from the past here. I still regard the animated one as probably the worst, most disappointing movie I've ever seen.

I'll have to think about live casting.
