** Official ** Eagles 2008 Thread (3 Viewers)

Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday.

It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year.

Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal.

Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early.

UPDATE: Asante Samuel just signed a 7 year 95 Million deal in Philly,

Apparently he is being guaranteed 28 million of it.

I'm officially ready for something official, but nothing yet. All we know is this: Asante Samuel is at the NovaCare Complex and the Eagles want to sign him today. Now. Right now. The Internet is reporting that a deal is done, but the Eagles have not made an official announcement.

Well, those two sets of numbers aren't even close to each other. The first set isn't terrible, the second set would be an absolute hoodwinking by Samuel.

:goodposting: :excited:  I'll believe that number when I see it on the Eagles website...

WIP talking as if it's a done deal 5 years, $47.2mm.

If that's the deal, I'm pretty damn giddy (unlike the imbeciles hosting the show right now).

They are pulling that info off of PFT. I would be surprised if these are the numbers if so kudo's to the Eagles. I do not listen to 610 any more but how could they be down on the Birds getting AS? They worried about having too many good corners?

Jody Mac on 950AM is saying pretty what Dave Spadaro is saying. Sounds like it will be done and the 5yr/ 47mil is what he is referencing.

It's infuriating, I don't know who is worse...the hosts or the callers. Here's been the gist...

"Yeah, he's a good player but we need offense, not defense"

"Why do we need another short corner?"

"We could've used that $$$ for two or three players instead"

It's BAFFLING.

Only my fellow Eagles fans and WIP's hosts would ##### and moan about the team racing out and signing the premier unrestricted free agent [or one of them at least]. Baffed.

Ughh, no wonder I love Sirius NFL so much. Its this simple, if the Eagles come out of this with AS, J.Walker and the ability to trade Lito, its been a freaking great off season. Not to mention they may pull in a few more FA's to fill in some depth.

Don't sweat it, these are the same people who were shocked to see Kearse cut.

He's by far the best FA available, and I'm a fan of Briggs. A lot of people try to paint the picture he's a product of the NE scheme but it didn't seem like that at all to me. It's strange that PHI fans of all people wouldn't be excited about this move. With an elite CB like that it should really help the pass rush and that was the missing ingredient last season... from the perspective of a non-Eagle fan anyway.

The guy may not be the best cover corner however the guys is a ball hawk and thats something the Eagles D desperately needs. AS jumps routes and puts himself in position to break up passes and get turn overs, something that their DBs havent really been doing.

I'll wait to see what the Eagles do with Lito before I get excited about signing Samuel.

If they keep Lito, I'm :pickle: .

If they trade Lito in a package for Fitz, I'm  .

If they trade Lito for more draft picks, I'm  .

I think it may be none of the above.I think they're looking to give away picks in trade for players or higher picks. So I think they'll either trade Lito and a pick or two for a high caliber player OR, if that falls through, will look to move Lito and a few 2nd day picks to get higher in the 1st round.

Rumors were that the Pats had interest in Lito, would their first turn that frown upside down?

Dear Lord...someone just called up WIP and suggested -- get ready -- the Eagles should trade Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis for Larry Fitzgerald. :lmao:

Chris Clemons coming to Philly tomorrow

"They're the first team we're going to visit, and maybe the last," Henderson said. "We're excited about Chris coming to Philadelphia."

I heard someone say before that if the Eagles did in fact sign Samuel, it could be Lito and Samuel at CB and Brown moved to S alongside Dawkins. I would love to see this. Any chance?

I wouldn't mind seeing it, but it appears the far more likely scenario is Brown and Samuel at CB, with Lito being traded in short order.

Happy trails to Thomas Tapeh, who has agreed to unspecified terms with Minnesota. Ho hum.

Most columnists and radioguys in Philly seemed to agree that Tapeh would be gone, but I've heard no speculation about who would fill his shoes. A talented fullback can be a valuable receiving weapon in Reid's offense, but the Birds might need more of a traditional blocking fullback considering the lackluster blocking ability of their TEs and the increasing reliance on Westbrook.

Owen Schmitt anyone?
Jason Davis- 5'11", 240 out of Illinios

Not if the deal is Pats #7

for

Lito and Eagles #19
That trade makes WAY too much sense for both teams to actually happen.

Do you think they are relying on Dawkins at S or do they bring someone in to eventually replace him? I'm not saying he won't be opening day starter but I would think they'd start to groom someone.

Keeping Lito makes sense as I believe his contract is not that bad. Depth and Nickel Strength would perfect for keeping him around. I mean, unless the FO thinks AS is that much better than Lito, why bother this all of this? If I had to place my bets, as crazy as it may sound, they might be keeping Lito around.

What is Lito's rate this year?

I was hoping they would've gotten Dawk's replacement last year.. I think they draft a replacement for him this year.. He can learn from Dawk for the next year or two.....

I also think an upgrade at DB's (3 VERY good corners) makes your pass rush somewhat better (an area of need for them) when QB's have to hold the ball an extra second or two since the WRS aren't open!

Lito is signed through 2011. He comes a t a pretty good price with his salary numbers.

Here are his numbers for the remaining years in his contract

Year Cap Value Base Salary Proration Other Bonus Dead $ If Cut

2008 3,450,000 2,000,000 1,450,000 0 2,900,000

2009 4,450,000 3,000,000 1,450,000 0 1,450,000

2010 3,700,000 3,700,000 0 0 0

I think the rationale for getting rid of Lito is that he will be asking for AS or Clement type money and his health just does not warrant it. You would also have to convince Brown to move to safety where he clearly would not make as much money on his next contract. That might be hard for him to swallow.

You have it backwards. Denver proved that 2 very good corners can look average with no pass rush. The NY Giants proved below average corners can look good with a great front four pass rush/

From Dave Spaddaro:

Samuel is in with Andy Reid and here, there and everywhere. No word on anything official to this point. The media has assembled and I'm counting five cameras so far. Certainly, there is a great sense of anticipation and excitement throughout the building.

This is my thinking as well. Move Sheldon to safety. Then on nickle situations bring in Mikell and put Sheldon in as #3 CB.

Now also apparently interested in under the radar DE Chris Clemons...
Don't like this one at all. The guy is a journeyman who had one decent season. (And one out of the league entirely!) He's purely a situational pass-rusher... I think they have that role covered with Cole and Thomas. What happened to Antwan Odom?
I don't understand this one at all either.Maybe just a depth move so they can finally cut McDougle. Kind of like the Reagor signing last year.
I was actually keeping a sliver of hope alive that a healthy McDougle could surprise in camp this year.
Sorry, I gave up on him last year.
Journeyman? He's been in the league for a whopping four years and is 26 years old. :wall:He was an undrafted free agent out of Georgia, played in Washington for three seasons as a backup and in his first year of real playing time dropped 8 sacks in Oakland. It's not like the Birds are going to be giving this guy huge money.
Who knows what kind of money they're offering? I simply find it a little unsettling that they've chosen to target an undersized situational pass-rusher on the first day of free agency. If this was a guy they picked up two weeks from now once the dust had settled, then ok, good depth signing. But Clemons is looking like one of their bigger priorities, and I'm just hoping that Reid and Banner don't view him as the answer to their need at DE.
Clemons = N.D. KaluVery one dimensional, with limited upside.

EAGLES SIGN ASANTE SAMUEL by Michael David Smith

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel.

According to Schefter, Samuel signed the six-year deal just moments ago. He arrived in Philadelphia today, and it had been widely reported that the Eagles wanted to do all they could to keep him from leaving without a signed contract in place.

No financial details are yet available. Samuel was said to be seeking a contract that paid in the $10 million a year range.
