edit: with a chance for another 6 in incentives

I'm sure there are a lot of smiles in the Philadelphia wage tax office right now. Good signing by the birds. If we can get decent value for Lito, I expect big things next year.

Reid said in his press conference that Samuel would be taking over the left side. Means Lito is either moving over to the right or moving over to another team. Hopefully to the right and Brown to safety.

Wilson is gone to Oakland. If Brown moves to safety, I think we're set. If not, I expect us to address it in the FA.
i think Dawk and Mikkell will be the starters at safety, and if they improve their pass rush I am ok with this. i do not think that Dawkins is done. But wold have loved to have gotten Gibril.

From the man who broke the Samuel story last night at 10:30, GCobb says...Randy Moss???

"Moss is upset and the jaguars have a deal on the table but he wants to talk to Mcnabb about playing in Philly. He also said the Cowboys is going at him hard."

It's 6 years, $57mm and worth every penny :D
 That's about as reasonable as the Eagles' could have hoped for. Kind of surprised he took less overall than Clements. I know the last years to these FA contracts are fluff but for him to get what appears to be a smaller contract is surprising.

As an Eagles fan, I want no part of Moss and it has nothing to do with Moss....while they may be "friends" and he is going to call McNabb about playing in Philly, McNabb's ego is so fragile that the first time Moss breathes on him, McNabb will crack and it will be TO, Part II. Moss seems to be a very strong personality and I can't see that meshing well with the boy in the bubble Donovan...

Love the Samuel move......gives you the flexibility to either have a serious upgraded secondary or trade Sheppard to either move up in the draft or to add a #1 WR....

Friggin hosts on WIP ranting about how "the defense isn't the problem."

:useless:

What team have they been watching? The Birds had 11 INTs last year and were the worst in the league with just 19 takeaways.

Get Sirius and be done with that crap. Any 5th grader knows D wins Championships.

The defense may not be the problem, but it certainly doesn't hurt to upgrade and defense wins championships. The offense isn't really a problem either, but adding another wide receiver (#1 or not) would help...

The offense actually was the problem last year. That and ST. Besides a 50 pt outburst against Detroit, their scoring average was way down and they lost quite a few low scoring games.Their defense was not dynamic (lack of turnovers) but was efficient. Their PPG was top 10 last year on defense.

I had Sirius and dropped it; just never found myself listening to it
The NFL channel alone should take up 8 hours of your day. Your ears must not have been working properly, try it out again.

What do you guys think the chances are for moving Gocong to DE? We have a good set of LBs, we could move Spikes to SAM, Omar to WILL, and Bradley to MIKE. Then pick up another backup LB and we'd be set. In a recent article, JJ made it seem like Bradley would have a good shot at being MIKE and he was toying with moving Omar around.
I like the sound of Bradley getting more playing time, but I don't like the sound of another smaller DE.Odom, please.....

Dear Lord...someone just called up WIP and suggested -- get ready -- the Eagles should trade Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis for Larry Fitzgerald. :goodposting:
:popcorn:Quick, call Matt Millen with that offer for Roy W!!!!!BTW Woodrow, I haven't heard 950 much, but I hear it is >>>> WIP. Jody Mac is pretty solid when I used to hear him years ago.But yes, NFL Radio on Sirius is $$$.

I heard someone say before that if the Eagles did in fact sign Samuel, it could be Lito and Samuel at CB and Brown moved to S alongside Dawkins. I would love to see this. Any chance?
Do you think they are relying on Dawkins at S or do they bring someone in to eventually replace him? I'm not saying he won't be opening day starter but I would think they'd start to groom someone.
They drafted 2 DBs last year but both were swiped off of the practice squad (Gaddis, Barksdale - one of them is on KC, the other ATL).The draft will be all about 09 and beyond - FA is about 08 and production now.

As I understand it, it's 32 mill in the first 3 years and 20 mill guaranteed. Not cheap but it's time for a serious push. I hope Lito stays content with his contract for now. We're going to need some quality CBs to match up against Moss and TO lined up across from eachother...

According to Shefter

LITO OUT THE DOOR?With cornerback Asante Samuel in the fold, the Eagles are now going to attempt to trade cornerback Lito Sheppard, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.Calls are already coming in for Sheppard, a first-round draft pick in 2002 who is still only 26 years old.In recent weeks, there were rumors that that Sheppard was on he block, and the team strongly denied it. In hindsight, it's likely that the Eagles didn't want to tip their hand regarding their plans to pursue Samuel.Sheppard is under contract for four more seasons, with base salaries of $2 million in 2008, $3 million in 2009, $3.7 million in 2010, and $4.25 million in 2011.

Love the action today from the Birds..i especially like the talk of them going after Fitz. Even though it looks like its dead, they finally admitted to themselves that they need a stud WR in their O. Thats Step 1, right?

Oh, and  at the WIP posts...SO glad i dont live in Philly and have to listen to that crap anymore.

Finally, i dont care who plays SS as long as Considope never sees the field again in Green and Grey

WIP is horrible. I heard this today too. "Its a good signing but eh, we didn't need him". I am like wtf how do these people have jobs and I don't. 950am > 610wip

Everyone seems all hyped about the Fitz rumors. Maybe I am in the minority, but I personally think that the Jared Allen rumor would be better for the team. Defense wins championships, and a pass rush of Allen and Cole would be very formidable.

Cole-12 sacks (26 yrs old)

Allen-15.5 (26 yrs old)

CLEMONS JOINS EAGLESHaving added prized cornerback Asante Samuel to their secondary on Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday will bolster their pass rush by signing unrestricted free agent linebacker/defensive end Chris Clemons of the Oakland Raiders.ESPN.com has learned that Clemons reached a Friday night contract agreement. He and agent Don Henderson will fly to Philadelphia on Saturday to sign the contract, details of which were not yet available. With eight sacks for the Raiders in 2007, when he was principally used as a situational pass rusher, Clemons is the leading sacker in the unrestricted free agent pool.Clemons, 26, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2003 with the Washington Redskins. The former University of Georgia star wasn't even in the NFL in 2006, and was signed by the Raiders last season almost as an afterthought. In 36 games, he has 36 tackles and 13 sacks.--Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com

Just trying to add fuel to the fire here ;) , but in watching the following interview you get the sense that McNabb knows something else is going on behind the scenes. Lots of "it is just the beginning of the offseason" and "stay tuned" type of comments. Probably doesn't mean anything more then what we already know (that they are trying to trade Lito). Oh well, this is going to be fun to watch for a while anyway.

:excited:

McNabb on Samuel

I don't know enough about Clemons to comment yet, but what are the thoughts of the approach now? Are the Eagles going to continue with the "hockey lines / shifts" approach of rotating the D-lines to keep everyone fresh?

I think that they will have to as Clemons is too small to be an every down player. 6-4 230, he is probably too small to be a DE except for in definite pass rushing situations.

What I'm hearing about Fitz: while Arizona seems to be willing to make some concessions in trading Fitz, it's Fitz himself that is making things much harder. He seems unwilling to restructure that 16+ million dollar cap hit and it's looking less and less like Fitz is going anywhere. This came from info I got last night, so the info might already be old. :D

As for Jared Allen, my guy hasn't heard anything past the initial inquiry the Eagles made regarding him. Lito was offered, but he's pretty sure the picks side of the rumor was fabricated by the guy on the KC blog.

Yep. "Fastballs" they call them. They're just gonna keep throwing them in I guess. Somebody has to stop the run.......or do they?

If the Eagles are in the "win now" mode, why wouldn't they just pay the last 2 years as is and see what happens?

Because it's a horrible deal where he reached every incentive it had rather easily. Why would we pay for their mistake? They will cripple their team if they pay him and it will drive up all their players price. It would make sense for them to trade him.

It would cripple the Cardinals cap, not the Eagles cap.

His game is speed off of the edge. That's it. Now he's pretty good at it, but I just can't imagine him as an every down player.

we didn't pay him to be an every down player. he's a gocong type player who adds depth to the defense, and jim johnson has expressed he loves those LB/DE hybrid players. he'll be a situational pass rusher. let's not forget that we don't want to sign an every-down player, we already drafted abiamiri to do that and we have to give him time to develop. replacing that spot before he can develop wouldn't be smart, but adding competition to push him further, that's smart.

One one hand, I like the idea of swapping DL in and out, but OTOH there's a legit concern about having 8 DLs active on Sundays. As I see it, you'd have 45 men active. On offense, you'd have 2 QB, 3 TE, 4 RB and 5 WR going. On defense the Eagles would then have 8 DL, 6 LB and 8 DBs. Factor in a PK and a punter and you're up to 22 on D, 2 ST and 14 on offense - leaving just 7 offensive linemen. Do you go with just 3 safeties? 5 LBs? Remember, LBs are often bigger contributors on ST / KR / PR downs. The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see a D scheme with Gocong as a 4th DL but have his hand up to give a 3-4 look. That could allow the Eagles to have 6 LBs active and just 7 DLs going.Just thinking out loud - if that's possible while typing....
