** Official ** Eagles 2008 Thread (1 Viewer)

Grats Philly fans, quite a game against the 'Boys today. That's definitely how you want to create some momentum going into the playoffs.

Next week, it's on!

As a Viking fan I am worried that the Eagles could start fast and drown out the home field advantage. If the Vikings repeat their play like they did last week against Atlanta, they won't make much of a game of it. I think the Vikes have a good shot at putting McNabb off his game, though.

wow. i mean wow. f'in unbelievable.I am here to officially eat all the crow you guys can throw at me. i cannot believe all the right dominoes fell today and then the birds actually played a great game.I hope i have to eat crow all the way to Tampa and then down broad street. Go ahead McNabb, I still think you are a choke artist, so please prove me wrong.
 I too will eat crow, especially on the Garcia pimping. As long as the team that played tonight shows up (verses the one that played last week or the one that tied Cinncinati) we could take this all the way. I hope Mcnabb plays great for four more games, earns a new contract, and makes those of us who mentioned Garcia the laughing stocks of this post.
Let's be perfectly clear about what won this game.1. The defense was fantastic.2. The gameplan was Morhenwhig and run/pass balance. 35-21 run-pass for the game, and before you say that was all in the 2nd half - it was 18-18 at the half.3. Won the turnover battle.4. McNabb threw well. Beautiful throw over the shoulder to DeSean in the second quarter to the red zone.In that order.
what about the wild and crazy philly fans? for all the flak they get it's nice to give them some props. also i heard a sideline reporter state that reid credited the run/pass ratio as a key to their success at the half. could this be a sign that he's changing his ways?
Props to the crowd. When I was there Thanksgiving night it was insane. Also - did you notice AR prompting the crowd to make noise? Unreal.

Also - did you notice AR prompting the crowd to make noise? Unreal.
Since we know Mike Holmgren was coaching in Arizona at the same time, the only likely explanations are:1. Craig Stadler sneaked onto the sideline.2. Possesion of Andy Reid's body by another being.3. Andy Reid showed emotion & was fired up.Signs are pointing to #3, but we need to know more about Stadler's whereabouts! :pickle:

Eating crow and loving it today - what a roller coaster Big Red has us on this year - how do you go from the lowest of the lows to the highest of highs in a week? The NFL makes no sense anymore.

Woleverine was unreal today- I hope they can bring him back

Love the Vikings matchup next week

I completly agree. Still, I have at numerous times in this thread painted McNabb as a choke artist who plays without passion or leadership. He played well yesterday and has played very well 4 out of the last 5 games (and honestly the Washington games was not his worst of the year. A lot of good bals were dropped there.). If he keeps playing this well and AR keeps running the ball we are in good shape because the Defense will do its job. Go Eagles!

Question for McNabb-haters...

Would you rather your QB have that smile on his face after bad plays or hold his helmet and look like he wants to cry like Romo does?

There were times last night that it looked like he wanted Phillips to take him out. I was looking very closely for tears.

:goodposting: The game ball goes to the defense on this one. The D-Line has been among the best in football over the last month of the season. Great to see contributions from Clemons & Howard (although he's been solid all year). It's gratifying (& maddening) to know us fans crying for a more balanced offensive game plan have been vindicated once again. Props to McNabb for managing a good game. He made some good throws when called; the one to Jackson, drilled the out to Curtis for a big 3rd down conversion & showed nice touch on the Celek. That being said, I still don't want to sign him to an extension w/ a lot of upfront cash. Casserly's point of finding some middle ground via roster bonuses makes a lot of sense. McNabb gains financially, the Eagles are rewarded with flexibility. I'm not going to lose sight of the fact that this is the first injury free campaign he's had since 2004. I hope the balanced offense is a harbinger of things going forward; but I kinda doubt it.

Absolutely amazing how much can change in a few short weeks. I still think the earlier problems this year were squarely on Reid's shoulders (I've always been a McNabb backer), but that's in the past.

Anyway, when I look at the field right now in the playoffs, there's not a team in it that I don't think the Eagles can beat (Indy would be a VERY tough game). I think they beat Minny by a TD or so (predicting 24-17). When they play the NYG.....well....let's take it a game at a time. :bag:

Positives in the Dallas game:

1. Defense. Please bring Brian Dawkins back. It would break my heart to see him playing for another team.

2. McNabb. Yeah, he had some bad passes early on, but bounced back nicely. He also several times kept a play going by moving OUT of the pocket for a change.

3. Play calling. This has been beat to death so I'll leave this alone.

4. Buckhalter. For the life of me, I can't understand why he's not more involved in the game plan. If they want to go far in the playoffs, you need to save Westbrook from the wear and tear of playing every down. Maybe a 60-40 split with Westy getting the 60.

5. LJ Smith. Yeah, I didn't see him either. A BIG positive IMO. :loco:

Nice post DH. What made me most excited was seeing the fire from the entire team yesterday. Reid waving his arms, McNabb running around pumped up, him and Westbrook running down the sideline to help Dawkins back to the bench, etc. This team is fired up and its great to see.

And I agree about Dawkins, when he stands on the 50 and leads the EAGLES cheer its just awesome. He should never be given any reason to want to play for anyone else.

One of the most confusing moves this season for me has been the benching of Gaither and starting Jordan. I didn't think Gaither was playing poorly and thought it was retaliation for him refusing their lowball offer. However, since that point this defense seems to be playing better. Does anyone have any more insight into why he was benched?

From what I've heard, he was missing assignments and generally not knowing the defensive plays like he should.

Agreed with DH. Not a team the Eagles couldn't beat right now. Would be nuts if THIS is our superbowl team, and in reality, we have a fine shot to get into that game. I have a good feeling about the MIN game -- their offense is more predictable than ours was earlier this year.

MIN is weaker against the pass. Anyone think we'll see the same old 70/30 pass/run ratio? I'm really hoping we wont, but hey, Reid is still the HC.

:banned: I think other teams that can make the same bolded statement are Baltimore, INdy, Pittsburgh, Tenn, NYG and Carolina. I don't think any of the other teams have a realistic shot of winning it.

Running around blocks mainly. The first game against the Giants & Hedgecock was the final straw. He is character guy & has a role, but he lacks range & if he's going to slip blocks rather than take them on, he's got no business starting.

What do you think Andy would say if you told him the Eagles are 13-2 in the last 15 games Correll touched the ball 6+ times? He's a very good back and deserves to have an important role with this team. 10 plays of 20+ yards this season.I also want to give Andy props yesterday for not throwing the challenge flag on the Westrbook fumble. If the play gets overturned, it's 4th down and you have to punt with a challenge lost. The ball was at the 25 anyway so you can't push them back too much further. If it doesn't get overturned you burn a timeout. Not much upside to throwing it.

1st-Buck tends to get the ball more in blow-outs so that may explain the record when he has 6+ touches.2nd- I have no idea what you are talking about with the fumble/challenge. If it had been overturned they would have kicked a FG not punted. They were on the Dallas 25. Regardless, I was glad he didn't throw the flag and it all worked out

Buck produces when he's on the field regardless of situation. Great asset to have with Westbrook.Had the challenge been overturned, it would've been an incomplete pass and gone back to the original line of scrimmage, which was the 38. I assume they would have punted from there only a couple minutes into the game.VERY happy to still be alive.

I thought it was more of wanting to put to bed the talk of his future with the Eagles, not a play to get more money. Plus, I would think re-doing his deal would make him more cap friendly next year which would help the team, and for him make him less likely to be cut/traded.

I think a Lombardi trophy would make these decisions alot easier for next year...

:lmao: I have never seen McNabb and Reid so pumped up, and that's been my beef with McNabb this year, that he always seemed so lackadaisical and didn't really care what was going on. Watching him run to the locker room at the end of the 1st half pumping his fists in the air was a great site to see. This team is together right now and hopefully they make this a nice, long ride.

This is the correct answer. We all know Andy's challenge decisions are suspect but this non-challenge was correct. First drive of the game and there was little to gain if the challenge was successful.

I'll take it.

I was impressed with the passion displayed by the whole team and coaching staff. Its as if they actually cared and it was refreshing to see it from everyone, not just a few coaches and players. Yeah, even my arch nemesis, #5, was showing some interest in winning. Hope they can keep that going, and keep AR away from the play calling. Who knows, i might actually become optimistic on this team :nerd:

Sorry Dawkins but i don't believe.

I will believe when it is 2 minutes left in the SB and the Eagles are up 4 with the ball and a 1rst down with the AFC Champs having no time outs.

My thoughts on the game vs. the Vikes:

1. The old Reid would have abandoned the run in the second half. They kept on plugging away and that impressed me.

2. Kevin Curtis is a stud blocking down field. He's not Hines Ward, but he's a better blocker than 95% of the WR out there. His block sprung Westbrook for those last 10 or so yards.

3. McNabb did a great job shaking off the bad first half and was VERY good the second.

4. Dawkins is playing out of his mind right now.

5. Awesome job by the D shutting down Peterson. You take out that one run (yes, I hate saying that) and he was pretty mediocre. IMO Taylor was much better today.

6. The Defense was absolutely brutal in their man-handling of the Vikes in the second half. If they can string that kind of effort over 4 quarters there's no team in the NFL they can't beat.

7. Awesome job by Akers and the rest of the ST.

Now some bad:

1. They must establish the run better. A Williams-less D-line killed them this week.

2. They MUST run Buckhalter more.

3. The D needs to do a better job on 3rd down.

1. Marty was calling the plays. Seems Marty never completely abandons the run like AR does.2. :thumbup:3. I thought McNabb was pretty solid in both halves. The pick wasn't a great choice, but wasn't ugly. He was pressured very heavily the whole game and was fairly accurate none-the-less. 4. :hophead:5. Peterson was less then mediocre besides that one play. But just like Westbrook, it was less Peterson sucking and more the opposing defense dominating the line of scrimmage.6. we already knew that...didn't we? 7. :thumbup:Bad:1, 2: It wasn't Westy and Bucky. The Vikings D flexed their muscles and showed why they are the best rush D in the NFL. Hats off to Marty for running just enough to keep them honest!3. I was thinking that too at the half...but then when I thought about it, I realized that the Vikes had several fluky conversions. Balls where TJ was throwing off his back foot, barely beating the rush, missing a linemans arm by an inch to find a reciever who barely got the first. The Eagles made them work hard for those first downs...and then the law of averages started to prevail in the second half.Overall...a quality game for the Eagles. A solid A for the defense, A for the ST's, and a B for the Offense. We knew we weren't going to run the ball well...but they let way too much pressure get through to McNabb, and it really limited the offense.

Yes, definately a quality game that they should celebrate for tonight, but they will need to play better next week if they hope to win. I think the absolute #1 problem and bad that is there is our red zone offense. I mentioned this in the Phi vs. NY thread, but Akers does not kick particularly well in the Meadowlands, and we will need to score TD's to win that game. Everything else (not running more, etc.) is able to be overcome. I think NY will really focus on not letting up any big plays. I was glad to see the Eagles try new things and experiment to see what could fix the red zone O during the year, so there is hope they can come up with some new tricks. I liked the play against Dal with Westy lined up outside and the screen to Buck, and I was not about bashing them for at least trying their version of the "Wildcat" offense in the red zone, but we certainly do not have any guarantee in the red zone. I hope they try more fade passes to Baskett there, but this does have me concerned.

Some of my thoughts on this and the NY game:

1. Avant has been making clutch plays all year. Is there a reason he (and Baskett for that matter) are not on the field more? DH, any inside info on this?

2. The emergence of Mikell at Safety has made Dawk look 25 again. He's so solid that Dawk is able to just fly to the ball, not worrying about having to cover others mistakes (ahem, looking at you Considine)

3. LOVED the half time adjustment to include the TEs and other plays over the middle. The MIN LBs were mugging all day and leaving the middle wide open

4. I'm thinking we'll see a lot more of the screen game against NY

5. 3rd and short seems to be an issue again. Dont have the stats, but i dont remember one run on 3rd and 3 or shorter. That is worrisome going into what should be a very close game

6. I think the NY game will come down to stopping Jacobs on D and converting on 3rd down on O.

Cant wait for next week. If the birds and Carolina win, i am making the trip to Charlotte one way or another.

Buck didn't get more carries because Klecko went down and they used him at FB the entire second half.... I too would like to see Buck get atleast 10-15 carries a game... He is perofrming at a high level right now... If the def keeps playing this well, we have a shot to win every game all.... you can ask....

How can you say RZ offense was a problem in that game? After all....we only had one trip into the RZ?

Yes...the Eagles passsed on third and short several times in that game...but the running game was going nowhere the whole game other then one Buckhalter run. Kudos to Marty for still dialing it up often enough to keep them honest, but it wasn't going to work with 3 or more yards needed.

The Vikings did an excellant job on the defensive side of the ball. Not sure that we should read too much into how the eagles O performed. The Defense and ST's however, were superb for Philly.

Trent Cole is a stud.

He didn't get to the quarterback but still contributes double digit tackles. He's f'n relentless.

Clemons paying big time dividends. I love the d-line rotation for the next couple years. Hopefully Abiamiri can get/stay healthy...Still quite a buzz around Bryan Smith too.

Address the offense early & often come draft day.

Oh & Jamaal Jackson is a mediocre player that has been exposed without his Shawn Andrews crutch to lean on. Off season upgrade please.

I've heard this argument a couple times, but don't quite get it. It's not like the eagles use a FB all that often. In a single back set, why couldn't they give it to Buck? Does anybody know how many plays Buck participated in? As rb/fb whatever.

;) Avant and Celek are really making key plays, both consistently making first down catches. Couldn't agree more on Mikell, he should be getting more notice as a solid safety.I also give Marty credit for sticking with the run game even though it was not producing great stats. It kept the Vikings D at bay and helped get our WR's open b/c they at least had to look for the run. Our WR's aren't the best at getting open and need all the help they can get. I was surprised we didn't see more screens, but they certainly made the right call with the Westy TD.

Yeah.. still wish they would have given it to him.. especially the last series or two to run out the clock... He basically was in almost every play in the second half...

Don't have the numbers, but Buck was on the field as a FB a lot. I think that had a lot to do with the matchup and the fact that the Vikings D-line was playing terrific. McNabb needed the extra pass blocker, and Westbrook needed a lead blocker.Buckhalter didn't get many touches in the game...but he was active in it and was a big part of the gameplan and the results even without a lot of touches. Often Westbrook was split wide or went in motion out of the backfield while Buckhalter was used as a blocker back there.

Take your fantasy goggles off for a minute. :)

You may be right that they didn't get to the redzone often. Considering their starting field position (minus the punt returns by Desean) most of the time I guess they didn't get to the red zone as much. I did more listening to the game then watching.

Remember this name....Danny Amendola.Rumor has it that WR Danny Amendola could be wearing Eagles midnight green next season -but it may be a few days early. Why should you care?Well, for one reason, he's a former Cowboy, so that's a nice jab at the Dallas organization, but more importantly it is his pedigree and the comments that he received back in August for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones compared him favorably to Wes Welker, a suitable comparison given that both went to Texas Tech. Imagine a Wes Welker-alike suited up in Philadelphia with DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis lined up on the outsides? Sounds like a West Coast Offense that even Donovan McNabb would enjoy (except for that go-to tight end, but it is closer). Here's the speculative article, as Mickey Spagnola on DallasCowboys.com wrote:

Apparently practice squad wide receiver Danny Amendola must think being on the Cowboys' 80-man roster heading into training camp in 2009 is a deadend to his NFL career, and says he plans on signing with Philadelphia. The former Texas Tech wide receiver said this on Friday while being interviewed during the local Cotton Bowl pregame show here on Fox before the Red Raiders took on Ole Miss in the final Cotton Bowl game to be played at the venerable Cotton Bowl. When asked by Fox-4 sports director Mike Doocy about moving forward with the Cowboys, the 2008 practice squad wide receiver said on live TV, "Actually I'm no longer with the Cowboys. I think I'm working on a deal with Philadelphia , and I'm trying to get out there...depending if they win (Sunday) in the playoffs I'm going to be trying to get out there and start working with them." Interesting. Yes, since Amendola finished the season on a practice squad he becomes a free agent. But, there is this little stipulation about the Cowboys having a seven-day window with exclusive negotiating rights with their own practice squad players. Uh, Dec. 29, the day after the Cowboys' season ended, and Friday, Jan. 2, the day of the Cotton Bowl, doesn't seem to add up to seven days on my 2009 calendar. Maybe there are like Leap Days on those January calendars in Philadelphia or Amendola is psychic, and just had this feeling the Eagles were going to contact him today.
It's not bad speculation at all, considering the logjam ahead of Amendola in Dallas. Terrell Owens, Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd, Miles Austin and even Isiaih Stanback are ahead of him on the depth chart for the Cowboys. Teams keep six wideouts max on a 53-man roster, so the future is grim for Amendola. He most assuredly would have better chances elsewhere. So, by my math, it is over a week since Dallas' season ended. Welcome to Philly, Danny Boy.

Jeez, that might be the smallest WR trio in league history (hyperbole alert). I just dont understand why Avant and Baskett are limited role players. They're both big and/or make tough catches. Why do the birds need another 5'10-6'0 smallish WR?

Because he might be talented (and displace - FINALLY - Greg Lewis?).I like Avant and Baskett. But Avant is lacking in YAC and Baskett hasn't been able to sustain a WR3 or WR4 role (although he's by far the best blocking WR they have).

Its hard to get YAC when you are sliding or catching balls off the turf. I think Avant is vastly under valued and yet another small WR does not excite me. They just need a legit red zone threat.
