***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

Yeah, metal vocals are tough. Almost no one can sing like Bruce Dickenson, and the super hardcore singers are all an acquired taste. Gojira is a band that does metal vocals perfectly, IMO.
I think you mean mastadon....a little growl...a little harmony....screaming....they have it all....plus more than one dude sings

I love them, but I have to be in a certain mood.  That kind of chaos live is a sight.

I've been getting into a lot of instrumental bands in my old age.  Dad rock?  I'm not sure.  Pelican.  Russian Circles.  Karma to Burn.  All the heavy without the distracting vocals.  Being a heavy metal vocalist just isn't as "easy" as some people make it out to be.  It does take a lot of range, and a lot of guys just don't have it.
Seriously went through something similar (though I'm more Dad Rock than most in here) in my thirties. Threw my Descendents CD to a friend and said I hated rock vocals. Now I listen to stuff that focuses on harmony, so I wouldn't quit on it entirely. We age, we change. It's a weird, wonderful life.

The new Ghost album is good, but a bit of a letdown following Meliora.  I like most of the new songs, but nothing on it kicks my ### like He Is, Mummy Dust or Circle.

Finally got around to a full listen of the new Ghost album and I would give it a 6 of 10.Way too poppy for my liking and whomever said it sounds like the Scorpions nailed it but overall it ain't terrible but it's just not something I would put into heavy rotation.I like his gimic though, just wish the sound were a bit heavier.

Ive been trying to find new bands by taking what I like on Liquid Metal and then listening to their albums on Amazon music. So far, I have not rally succeeded. Bands like Underoath, Turnstile, Parkway Drive (the closest) have all been disappointing.

So I always seem to come back to my comfort zone. I popped this in during my run yesterday and it still holds up.

Great band.  Kyle Thomas from Exhorder sings with them now.
Did not realize that. Cool. I know Wagner has his own band called the skull named after that trouble album.

That power trip doesn't do anything for me.  I love that style but its just ahight.  I did like the prong cover on the new one though.

Saw Kreator on this latest tour.  They do not #### around.  Played close to 3 hours.  Those dudes are no spring chickens either.

So if you were looking for new music, what are your all-time favorite hardcore / metal bands?

Hardcore: Bad Brains, Cro Mags, Gorilla Biscuits, Snapcase, Strife, Sick of it All

Metal: Metallica, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, anything I hear from lamb of god I like, but can't say I know their stuff well. Similar with killswitch engage.

I tried to think of other metal bands, but none are coming to mind. I like Slayer, but wouldn't say im a huge fan. I am more of a punk/hardcore guy.

Since Sirius got rid of faction, ozzys boneyard and liquid metal are my go to stations.

I'll start by pimping Gojira. Listen to all of Magma or all of From Mars to Sirius. Have you heard the new Burn The Priest? Legion XX is a Lamb of God side project with all cover songs, including The Melvins and Bad Brains. Killswitch is a good band if you like a real singer instead of a growler. I'd go through their YouTube videos. I bet you'll find stuff you like.

As for punk and hardcore, these are bands that are newer / more recent that rock:

Off!
Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine
The Hives
Pins of Light

Crystal Fairy
